Jammal Brown on PUP list

I hope its ok to start a new thread on this. But what's the story on Jammal Brown?? Is the PUP list for him a big concern or just a precautionary/temporary thing?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/foo ... _blog.html
Washington Redskins starting right tackle Jammal Brown will open training camp on the Redskins’ Physically Unable to Perform list, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Brown wasn’t onhand for his team’s first walkthrough and practice sessions of training camp Thursday.
PUP list delegation means a player didn’t pass his training camp physical and hasn’t received clearance to practice. Brown can be activated off the PUP list at any time, as long as he passes his physical.
Brown - who started the last two years for Washington, but ended both seasons in Injured Reserve - has spent the offseason rehabbing his problematic right hip.
Brown had surgery on the hip in 2009, missed the entire season and then was traded to Washington from New Orleans during the 2010 offseason.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has said Brown - who re-signed with Washington in 2011 - needs a good offseason to remain on the team.
Brown and his coaches were both pleased with his progress, and said yoga had helped improve his mobility. Brown wasn’t limited in OTAs, but the Redskins have not commented on his absence Thursday afternoon. A spokesman said Shanahan would address it during his post-practice press conference.

That's not a good sign, but the backups were looking pretty good out there late last season. Open competition doesn't worry me a bit.

Checking on Twitter, all the sportwriters are saying that we will have to wait until Shanny's press conference later today. They are expecting to get much out of it, other than, Brown is on the PUP.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan confirmedthat tackle Jammal Brown has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of an injury to his hip. Shanahan said Brown was running well yesterday afternoon, but aggravated the hip during his “sixth or seventh gasser,” and will be evaluated by doctors. Shanahan said he didn’t know how long Brown will be sidelined.
Shanahan said Tyler Polumbus and Maurice Hurt will split time at right tackle in place of Brown.

At best, Brown may not last the entire season EVEN if he recovers in time to start.
I think Skins will make a quick decision based on the MRI scan. They should have signed Demetrius Bell when they could. Hopefully, somebody may become available to fill this hole for additional depth.

Crap! It's not even my hip and I feel a bit demoralized.

Urgh... offensive line is arguably our weakest position, and with a rookie QB, it's probably our most important. Jammal Brown has been injured/ineffective for two years, I don't think we can count on him to make a meaningful contribution to the Redskins.
Hopefully we can replace him, but I don't see a good replacement on the current roster.

Mo Hurt has been moved to RT to compete with Will Smith (who did a pretty good job as Brown's replacement last season). It's not a new position for Hurt considering they moved him from tackle to guard after they drafted him last season.

Jammal Brown's 2012 cap hit is $4.55 million #Redskins #RedskinsTalk

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Do you keep him on the PUP for the fist 6 weeks of the season or risk him hobbling through the season and having to shut him down. I am thinking PUP. A third option would be to cut him and not have to pay him and live with the dead cap money.
Decisions! Decisions! Decisions!
Do I have the details right 1nik?

Under the new rules they can put one player on IR after week one starts and re-activate him six weeks later to practice, that player can play two weeks later (this would free up a roster spot for six weeks or so). That could be a option if he makes it off the PUP.
If they cut him they will save $3.25M (his Base Salary in 2012) with a dead cap # of $1.5M this year
and $4.5M in dead cap next year

Does anybody here truly believe he can contribute anything other than advice to younger players this season...?
He broke down in sprints. Not the twisting and turning that the exertion of full contact football brings. His hip is cattle-trucked, end of.
He'll be released. We will then have to keep our eyes open for an experienced RT who doesn't make their team elsewhere.
I like Smith and Polumbus, they did well considering the circumstances they were thrown in on last year, and they'll be better with a full pre-season under their belts with no lock-out, but I want an experienced head in there this season ideally.

^ Agree
Jammal Brown's 2012 cap hit is $4.55 million
However, the possibility that the Redskins will move on from Brown by the time the regular season starts has to be considered. Late last year Shanahan told the media that Brown has to be able to stay healthy if he is going to be on the team. If an MRI reveals that there will be issues with his hip that are likely to last all season long, Brown’s roster spot could be in jeopardy.
If they decide to move on without him, the smart move would be to get him to where he could pass a physical and the release him before the season starts. That would knock his salary off of the books for this year, leaving his $1.3 million prorated singing bonus as dead cap.
The Redskins would pay for this move in 2013. They would have the remaining $3.9 million left on his signing bonus charge left on the books that they would have to eat in dead cap. However, they could roll over the $3.25 million savings from this year into next, so it would be about $700,000 short of a wash.
Again, the Redskins have no plans to do anything with Jammal Brown right now and he remains on the roster. But if they do decide to let him go the net cap impact would not be too difficult to manage even with them having to deal with the remaining $18 million of the NFL’s salary cap penalty.
With the ability to rollover his salary for next year and offset the cap hit for next year. I would have to agree with SLR.

Reason number 1 I have been yelling about getting more OL........ Brown won't be the last OL to get hurt this year. The OL position is the most commonly injured position in football. OL depth is paramount to success in the NFL.

The Redskins drafted
3 lineman this year. One with their first pick outside of RGIII (
LeRibeus) and
Gettis had a higher grade in some folks books than than Iowa's top lineman (Gettis was considered too small - Shanny likes 'em that way).
Compton appears to be a good project for the PS. We picked up
James Lee (starter's experience).
Wille Smith had several starts and looks promising.
Polumbus is a versatile back up that played well at times as a starter.
Mo Hurt was playing guard when he is a natural tackle where he is now.
We
don't need more lineman. Where we might agree is that we are not getting the quality linemen needed to get us to the next level.
Too me, this is a
Shanny issue. His protege' - Kubiak - runs the same offense, yet he does better with bigger linemen in the same system.
Concerning the Shanny way of developing lineman - that is not going to change. He is who he is.
Concerning Brown this season, it appears he may have goofed in trusting him. If he would have cut brown in the spring, the only thing that would be different today, is we might have
Demtress Bell (Signed with Philly after we gave him a look - wanted too much money) on our roster. Bell is coming off an injury in Buffalo. We might not have been able to go after
Winston (Signed with the Chiefs after playing for the Texans) because of the salary cap penalty. Again, there is an unknown with Winston because he was mysteriously let go by the Texans.
A
careful look at the situation says you don't get rid of Brown (who looked to be in good shape) and go after an injured Bell or a mysteriously released Winston.
As far as
free agency, clearly Shanny's priority was wide receiver. Had the salary cap penalty not happened perhaps we would have picked up a stud lineman.
So
if your criticism is about Shanny's priorities and the type of linemen he acquires O linemen,
I hear ya, but given how Shanny does O line business, it's business as usual for him. The line last year was
better than the line in 2010.
Trent is looking good this year.
Monty gets to concentrate on center.
Chester is expected to get better.
Kory is on target to get back in there and finally, there is
plenty of experienced depth. What to do about Brown's slot? Stay tuned.

Well, they have the guys that filled in last year. The same guys that gelled and played well towards the end of the season.
In addition, they have the guys that they drafted this year. We have plenty of depth.
I'm sure that cap-gate tied their hands a bit in regards to OL and Free Agency.

Yeah I think Chris is right. I'm sure Shanny completely agrees with all of us that we need quality OL depth. Its apparently not something that you can just snap your fingers and acquire in a season or two though.
All that said, seems like I've been reading since Shanny got here how he was so successful in Denver at developing these OL guys from the later rounds. I hope he starts delivering that type of success here in DC soon. RGIII is counting on it!!!

I hope that Polumbus or another young guy can step in and take the position over. If the guy isn't completely terrible, it's just gonna have to be a trial-by-fire type of deal. Polumbus played decent last year, he has 7 games worth of experience I believe.
I'm sure that Mike feels a bit antsy because he has to protect his young QB. But hopefully RG III's decision making will be quick and he can deliver the ball with haste.
Maybe part of the issue is that, the time that it may take the o-line to gell might be the amount of time it'll take to get RG III off track. That's how Patrick Ramsey got ruined, poor kid was shell-shocked

More about Polumbus' experience: He played for Shanny in the ZBS in 2008 and he played two years in the ZBS in Seattle where he started some games. He was with Denver in 2009 after Shanny left, but I don't know if they continued the ZBS.
As we know with most O lines, most of the starters are developed from low round or undrafted guys. Polumbus could be one of those rising guys.

I have no way of proving it, but I think Bell was an opportunity missed because of our cap penalty. Otherwise I think we'd have bid on him.

I agree with your thinking. Shanny was definitely looking for a vet tackle. That's his MO anyway. He likes competition. Bell visited several places, but came away empty. That usually means that he is asking too much. Shanny finally "settled" on James Lee, a vet, but not the same talent as Bell, but certainly cheaper.
The 6-foot-5, 311-pound Bell is the first offensive lineman known to visit Redskins Park this week. The Redskins also have interest in former Houston Texan Eric Winston, but he has yet to visit team headquarters.

Report: Brown doesn't need hip surgery
Our Chick Hernandez tweeted that the initial report on Jammal Brown's hip shows no surgery is needed. However, Brown will see a doctor tomorrow concerning his other hip.
