Umenyiora: Who is this RGIII? You mean Bob Griffin?

I would like to take a moment to thank Mr. Umenyiora for the excellent bulletin board material — and so early in the season, too:
Osi Umenyiora says RGIII hasn’t earned his nickname
Robert Griffin III is most often called RGIII. If you ask Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora, however, he hasn’t earned the nickname yet.
From the New York Post, who transcribed Umenyiora’s interview with WFAN 660:
Of course, Umenyiora from time to time doesn’t mind some stick-poking. He shows respect for opponents but refuses to heap praise on players who haven’t proven anything. Case in point: He will not refer to Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III as RG3 even though that’s basically what everyone calls him.
“Who is this RG3 guy you guys keep talking about?’’ Umenyiora said. “You talking about Bob Griffin? You guys are giving him a cool nickname already and everything. When he does anything in the NFL we’re gonna call him RG3. Right now he’s Bob Griffin.’’
Something tells me Bob won't be too concerned with what Umenyiora calls him. Perhaps Osi would prefer Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.
It must feel good to be last year's Super Bowl champs, but maybe he shouldn't be so quick to write us off. There are a couple of games involving the Giants and Redskins that stick out in my memory from last season, for instance.

Wonder if he's open to Bobby Griffin III. Sounds like he's from NC like me.

to the victors go the spoils. he is a member of the world champs; that team can say whatever they feel like.
the redskins on the other hand are last place devotees. no one owns last place like the washington redskins. four years running. their last winning season was in 2007.
the redskin players know this; they're all professionals. they know better not to talk any crap when they NEVER, EVER (ever ever ever ever) put up on the field over the course of a season so only their fans show the poor table manners and speak up; perpetually writing verbal checks in their favorite season - the offseason - that their heroes never can cash in the real season.
and if you could only be so open minded to realize his message was actually about the bulletin board material coming out of all places - YOUR TEAM. Intended or not, that's how he's going to take it.
THEY win the Super Bowl and the national football coverage outlets spend the offseason talking about a rookie QB's socks.
THEIR Super Bowl MVP is on Leno as much as a rookie QB - beatboxing his way to tv ratings.
now television commercials, non stop news stories............
the world champs are aware of YOUR team's "bulletin board" material as well.
the giants are 1-3 against washington in the recent two seasons they won the super bowl. they don't care about your team.
there has been NO impact to losing to the redskins. the redskins don't play in big games, they are not there in January, losing to washington doesn't mean anything. it doesn't derail a season.
this isnt college football where alabama (the giants) loses a game to Western Kentucky (the redskins) and it ruins their season. nobody cares about washington.
simply put, the road to accomplishing great things during an NFL season has NOTHING to do with going through the washington redskins. absolutely nothing.

I like it. Talking trash to a team that beat you twice WITHOUT a threat at QB...
Bring it.

RGIII's response to Osi:
“I don’t think you can be approachable if you’re larger than life or if they feel you think you’re larger than life. You have got to be down to earth,” Griffin said. “You’ve got to talk to them, be real with them. I think that’s the biggest thing and I try to be real with all of my teammates. I mean, if they want to call me RGIII, they can call me whatever they want. I think that persona of RGIII as far as a fan — it’s not the same feeling for these guys in the locker room.”

I'm starting to wonder if RGIII secretly hired a full-time PR staff that since college has worked to give him the perfect answer to every question.

How else to explain it?
In truth I bet Osi's words were probably delivered in a light-hearted way and that's probably how RGIII took it. So I doubt he'll be getting worked up he'll get over it. But I hope he keeps it in mind come October and gets at least a little motivation out of it. Even if Osi's joking, we can deliver yet another win, pushing around their d-line, running it up the gut, and putting Manning on his butt . . . all with a wink and a smile.

Ummm.. so how is this motivation?
All he said was until he earns that cool nickname he's gonna call him Bob. Seems right to me.
Not sure what RG3 would get motivated about, he should be motivated just because he's in the NFL.
Not bulletin board material, message board material for us fans, absolutely.

We need a big banner for the giants game that we can raise after our new QB throws for a TD or runs one in, and it should say:
Osi, meet RGIII.
RGIII, meet Osi.

+1 I'm sure someone will do it, Redskins fans are pretty creative when it comes to signs.
Ask Dannyboy about that, he knows 1st hand.

So... Osi, RG3 is a nickname?
Umm... I thought it was his initials. What does someones initials have anything to do with football or his ability to play the game?
<cough> Umm... brilliant, Osi...

He's a professional football player, not a scholar. Not sure we should expect much more. His sole reason for saying what he did is that he (like some other people I know) don't understand why we're talking about a kid who has yet to play an NFL down, preseason or otherwise. I mean, nevermind that we do this EVERY G-D YEAR.
He can't be bothered with your "accuracy" and "intellect" he's too busy counting money and super bowl rings. When the time comes for Robert (Now calling him Bob, ironically enough, is a nickname) to put his cleats in Osi's throat, then we'll see what's what.

I don't have a problem with it and I like a lot of fans will not crown the guy a franchise QB until he shows he's the guy. Seen too many look the part and then flop. I'm behind him 100% but he has to do it.
