Redskins release Jabar Gaffney
Before the draft, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney said that the Redskins were trying to trade him.
That didn’t happen, but Gaffney is still gone from Washington. Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports first reported that the team has released Gaffney and PFT has confirmed the news.
Gaffney was Washington’s leading receiver last season, but the acquisitions of Pierre Garçon and Josh Morgan as free agents helped push him out the door. With Santana Moss still around and Leonard Hankerson on the way back from a hip injury, Gaffney just didn’t have a spot on a suddenly crowded wide receiver depth chart in Washington. It probably didn’t help that Gaffney had a strange little rant on Twitter last month, but the writing was probably on the wall before that ever happened

Gaffney said Shanny told him there's a chance he can come back.

Sorry, I don't understand this move at this time. Unless Mike truly wants to give Gaffney a chance to catch on somewhere else, why not keep him around until we need the cap room or roster space?

Gaffney would have been extremely under utilized this year with our given wideout corps. I think the best thing to do, for him and the team, was to let him go. Cap space freed up and so is a roster spot, we are still getting young and Gaffney is on the wrong side of 25. Hope he finds somewhere, out side of ther NFCE, and does well.

Bad decision. Gaffney is/was our best receiver.

CH1,
I agree, but lets say Garcon is better, that still makes him our 2nd best WR!

I think you hit the nail on the head. MS feels that Gaffney's chances of makin gthe team are slight, so he wanted to give him a chance to "catch on" with another team.
If Gaffney can't find any takers maybe he does come back to compete for a small shot at making the roster.
I saw a Cowturd fan saying he would be a good #3 for them and he would. Heck he has had more production over the past two seasons than Austin and Bryant. Of course both of those guy missed time to injury, but Gaffney had a MUCH worse QB situation!

Other than they cap impact (and that is significant) I don't see how this improves the team.
Maybe they had to chose him or Cooley. If so, they made the right choice.

So when does the tema have clear that space? It obviously isn't before the draft! So whne is it? Is it before you sign your rookies?

I still can't find that info

I'd say rgiii is a lock at number ten now...
Not that he wasn't before, just want have to pay to wear it.

Oh, he has to pay for it... He just lost one of his better WR!
$25-30K might have been a bargain!

He's taller faster and better then garçon?
I understand why people aren't happy about this but I don't see how he'd even get on the field this year with
Hanktime- coming back he is just as tall w good hands and probably more speed
Garçon- is the same player just younger and faster
Morgan- is bigger I'd guess faster and was the leading wr on the niners before he got hurt
Tanna- personally I'd rather keep the skins vet vs a guy who had a decent year
Then we have our young guys that may or may not make the team in austin, bb, Robinson, and a whole slew of rookies.
AAA is probably gone too.
Who do you cut instead? He's just an older version of what we got.

I don't really understand how you guys are confusing Gaffney with Garcon. One is clearly better than the other... If you haven't watched him, check his highlights out. Then check out Jabbars youtube highlights. Notice the difference.
If it's too difficult to discern, I'll make it easy. BIG PLAY ABILITY. Garcon is at 100. Jabbar is at -10.

As Redskin1 pointed out, cap space and there's this thing called professional courtesy. Do you think that Jabbar would give it 100% knowing that he's the odd man out and that he isn't part of the long-term plan here? Why have that dead weight in the facility? Why keep that negative attitude around your young team? Because he put up decent numbers on a terrible offense, numbers that aren't anything special on top tier offenses? He's an average WR at BEST.

And that's not really nothing to be proud of.

Jabbar wrote:I just heard. I just talked to Mike Shanahan. He said I was going to be making too much, and that they wanted to see what the other players can do. He said there is a chance I can come back, but he said it would be for around the minimum because I wouldn't be the starter anymore. I am not interested in going from being their leading receiver to being third-string, and having my number taken from me. That is pretty much telling me that I am not going to be making the team. Now Drew (Rosenhaus) can start talking to other teams to find me a new home.
Yea, I want this guy in our locker room. [/sarcasm]

Not saying I disagree with any of that. Reread the highlighted portions of my post. The arbitration hearing is in 9 days. We might have plenty of cap space in a little more than a week. If we don't have to be under the cap or need the roster spot right now, I just don't understand the timing of the move.

OK, I hadn't read that. He should have had Drew looking for a new team a week ago.

no, but he has been just as productive (and that IS WHAT COUNTS) as Garcon over the past three season with worse QB play for two of the three years!

Look I hope Hanktime is a lot better than Gaffney, but he is still an unproven quantity!

Also Garcon is more expensive and drops more passes, but why do we need to choose? I know WR never get hurt so we never need depth.
Actually I would see Gaffney as a flanker not a split end, he and Garcon would play different spots and Gaffney is CLEARLY more productive then anyone else that might line up there!
cowboykillerzRED wrote:

WOW! What a play on words! Three catches a game may have been the 49er leading WR at the time, but seriously...
Don't get me wrong, I like the kid and glad to have him as a backup for Garcon, but is he really that much of a different player than AAA?
cowboykillerzRED wrote:

Productive, but he is definately in decline, while Gaffney posted careeer best for the past three consecutive years. I could see Gaffney playing the slot too.

I wouldn't make those decisions now. I would go into training camp and let the play on the field detirmine who to keep! Keep the best five.
Of course the cap hit created by Mara and GoDaHell might have prevented that and again if it was a choice between Gaffney and Cooley (cap space wise) then it is an easy choice. The money you save from Cooley weighed against what you lose production wise is just not worth it compared to the same for Gaffney.

Gaffney has never even had a 1k yard season... Hes a good number 3 but we got a better one in Morgan/Hankerson.
His stats last year are nothing amazing. He caught a lot of passes when our go to guy, Davis, was drawing defenders. And on top of that had Davis played the last four games then our leading receiver would have been a TE not Gaffney.
Look at his history, if hes so good why does he bounce around from team to team? He couldn't even get off the ps in philthy. Jus sayin
He doesn't return kicks so wouldn't justify cutting BB or any other receiver who does.
Who's your five?

But Garcon has a lot more TD's and got those TD's last year with 1/8 of the talent around him.

In fact, the team is marketing
Griffin III #10 jerseys...
