Why Can't We Find Gems In The 3rd Round

I'm sitting at my desk waiting to go to a boring meeting and looking over mock drafts with at least 3 rounds to see who people are predicting for us in the 3rd. Then I started thinking DAMMMM!!!!! who have we selected in the 3rd over the past 20 years that was a true impact for us and my mind was blank. You have gotta to be kidding me 20 years many different GMs and nothing.

Here the list:

1992: 3 3 18 74 Paul Siever G Penn State
1993: 3 3 15 71 Rick Hamilton LB Central Florida
4 3 24 80 Ed Bunn P Texas-El Paso
1994: 3 3 3 68 Tydus Winans WR Fresno State
4 3 32 97 Joe Patton G Alabama A&M
1995: 3 3 4 68 Darryl Pounds DB Nicholls State
1996: No Pick
1997: 3 3 20 80 Derek Smith LB Arizona State
1998: 2 3 8 69 Skip Hicks RB UCLA
1999: No Pick
2000: 3 3 2 64 Lloyd Harrison DB North Carolina State
2001: No Pick
2002: 3 3 14 79 Rashad Bauman DB Oregon
4 3 22 87 Cliff Russell WR Utah
2003: 2 3 17 81 Derrick Dockery G Texas
2004: 2 3 18 81 Chris Cooley TE Utah State
2005: No Pick
2006: No Pick
2007: No Pick
2008: 4 3 33 96 Chad Rinehart G Northern Iowa
2009: 2 3 16 80 Kevin Barnes DB Maryland
2010: 1 3 0 0 Jeremy Jarmon DT Kentucky
2011: 3 3 15 79 Leonard Hankerson WR Miami (FL)?

16 can't judge Hankerson yet but only Cooley and Dockery have been regular starters and only Cooley has made the probowl that is a disgrace if you ask me. So what should we expect from this years pick...hummm!!!

I see your point but you did miss Derek Smith. He started his entire rookie contract for us (61 games). He played for 11 or 12 seasons and a total of 167 games. If we could find a Derek Smith with every other 3rd round pick we would be doing great!

I remember him and Patton but IMO neither were worth mentioning. Smith only started cuz we were in rebuild mode and we quickly looked to upgrade him. If I'm not mistaken he did play and possibly started for the 49ers.

Yes, he started over 100 games for the 9ers and I think he even made the PB ones year as an alternate, but that didn't show up on pro-football-reference.

+1

I think there needs to be some perspective here. The Baltimore Ravens & Patriots have been good at consistently finding players in the mid rounds who start etc. But, that's the exception rather than the rule.

For me, (i) the philosophy that I'd have in the 3rd round is to focus on positions where you get greater value like Interior Linemen, Right Tackle, or RB and (ii) look at highly talented players from smaller schools or less competitive conferences - see Vincent Jackson, Terrell Owens etc.

The Draft is not a science. But, we can do well for ourselves if we do our homework.

Seems our picks have been pretty decent in the third round. Besides Cooley already mentioned, Dockery was a good guard. Barnes is contributing in the secondary. Jarmon was good, but not suited to the 3-4. Hankerson had a heck of a one game season...

What are you expecting? I don't don't find our recent history surprising in any way.

It looks like we've done better lately. I agree with Hogman on the value concept though I might leave out RB. I hope we go OL or ILB with the 3rd round if we are not reaching. There will be starter-quality linemen available.

The Redskins have also had a grand total of one draft of late in which an actual GM was actually in charge. So I think comparing pre-2011 seasons isn't great as a reference point.

I am a fan of LaMichael James this year, so I threw that on there. I think he's similar in many ways to Ray Rice--who fell in the draft because of his size & school attended. I think he's a top end talent that will be better than other backs taken ahead of him--and he'd add a dimension to our offense that we've never seen before.

James is a shifty, explosive back who catches the ball well, changes direction & accelerates like a canon. With him catching the screen from RG3 or stretching the defense on stretch plays would be lethal in our play action style offense. 4.3 Back 4.3 QB.

I think he instantly makes this Offense explosive. Hopefully our cap penalty is overturned, and we can address OLine in FA once the next round of cap casualties hits the market post draft.

I'm taking this guy with one of the 3 picks between the 3rd & 4th rounds.

I'm out on a limb for James. I think he is the perfect change of pace back in the year 2012. He has explosive ability and deadly speed and quicknesss both as a runner and a pass catcher. Pairing him with RG3?? Seriously. This is my pick.

I'm with you on picking James in the 3rd if he's there. He's a HR hitter this offense needs, I just don't know if there will be room for him if we bring back Sgt. Hightower. It will be tough to carry 4 RBs on the active roster.

You know I was completely against drafting another RB, but if that dude drops to us they have to seriously consider taking him.

Maybe they don't plan on signing Hightower until after the draft. If they draft a RB, don't ring Hightower back.

I loved watching James catching screen passes and that deep ball he caught down the sideline was something we haven't had here in decades.

Enjoyed the video. Good looking runner.

LaMichael James*, RB, Oregon
Height: 5-8. Weight: 194.
40 Time: 4.37. 10-Yd Split: 1.60
Bench: 15.
Vertical: 35. Broad: 10-3.
Hand: 9.
Projected Round (2012): 3.

Here's a guy who is a hair bigger and a hair slower but significantly stronger.

Robert Turbin, RB, Utah State
Height: 5-10. Weight: 222.
40 Time: 4.44.
Bench: 28.
Vertical: 36. Broad: 10-2.
Hand: 9 3/4.
Projected Round (2012): 3-4.

4/4/12: Turbin is a sleeper prospect who has some speed and is extremely strong. He showed that off at the Combine. Turbin averaged 6.1 yards per carry this season, rushing for 1,517 yards and 19 touchdowns. He caught 17 passes for 171 yards and four scores as well. In 2009, Turbin broke out with 1,296 yards and 13 touchdowns. He missed the 2010 season because of an injury.

Turbin is put together well and is an elusive runner. He could surprise at the next level. Turbin could be one of those mid-round running backs who turns into a good pro and makes teams regret passing on him.

simple, the redskins suck at player acquisition. and why are you going all the way back into the 90s. that's pointless. that was a different franchise then. different owner, gm. just look under the Snyder years, because that's the link to today. Snyder, who is the worst owner in the sport and who has destroyed your beloved franchise beyond repair, is still the guy who decides who the guy or guys are that pick the players.

so start from 2000. (knowledgable people like me know that Snyder didn't actually get ownership of the team until after the 1999 draft and major free agency period so he wasn't given a chance to wreck that 99 squad like he would starting the very next offseason in 2000).

and it is THE reason why the redskins are a failure. because they don't know how to put together a football team. you can't do it all with first round pick. that would take 22 years of drafts. you HAVE to hit BIG OCCASSIONALLy in the later rounds.

look at their division. look where the eagles drafted pro bowl de Trent Cole. Brent celek is a good te for them. desean Jackson was a second rounder. the cowboys didnt even draft romo or Austin and both have been to pro bowls. both were undrafted free agents. the giants.........they have a wide receiver every other year becoming their #1 guy and a real league talent. their latest also wasn't even drafted and he had over 1500 yards! the redskins couldn't draft a wide receiver to save their lives. they just sign 19 free agent wide receivers and give them all millions of dollars in hopes one of them sticks. that's their plan.

it's no wonder the redskins are in last place every year

oh and by the way, an asterisk next to Cooley. if I recall correctly, they had to trade a future second rounder to obtain the third rounder to draft Cooley.
