Niles Paul - Tight End ?

I read recently where Niles Paul had gained 10-15 pounds. I know he was used almost exclusively as a blocker last year. Any chance we could see him used as a tight end?

What's the difference? Receivers can block inside, TEs can split out wide.

A difference without a distinction, I say.

Even with 15 more pounds, he would be under 240 pounds which is light for TEs for today's standards. Of course, Cooley dropped to the 240 range, so you never know. With all the receivers that they signed, that could be something to keep an eye on.

He is 6'1" so I strongly doubt he'll ever make it at TE and gaining all that weight means he's probably lost some speed. I see nothing special in this kid I'm sure he'll be cut before the season opener.

From what I've read, coaches value his contributions on special teams. Doesn't guarantee anything, but I think he deserves a little more faith than you seem to have.

The guy is already one of our better run blocking receivers which is not Davis or Cooley's forte. I am keeping an eye out on this one.

He was the one that said he had gained weight and it came up in a discussion about his speed and weather or not he could keep up with BB, DH and AA. He laughed it off and they said they wanted to see what he looked like before doubting him. IMO, that means his teammates aren't worried about him losing a step and doubt the extra weight is all fat.

That being said, they did list blocking TE as a need going into the off-season.

I'm not sure he's even on the team this year.

For what it's worth he ran a 4.41 40 at 6'1" 224 lbs.

Well all I'm saying is when a anybody gains 15lbs they will get slower. I'm sorry I never seen anything very impressive from this kid and if the Skins believe he's special they don't try to bring in three new receivers hummmm!!!!

Guy I'm not hating just being real and calling like I see it.

More talk of Paul to tight end over on ES. I like it.

maybe he's a new OMG-thats one man gang, not the other OMG- in the making. That might really prove to be a good move, wasn't he pretty decent at blocking already?

Per the Washington Post - Paul is switching to TE.

Niles Paul preparing to switch to tight end
By Mike Jones
As the Washington Redskins began their voluntary offseason conditioning program this week, second-year pro Niles Paul started preparing to switch from wide receiver to tight end.

Paul, whom the Redskins drafted in the fifth round out of Nebraska last year, played in 13 games as a rookie, recording two catches for 25 yards. Most of his action came on special teams, but he did start two games at receiver and pleased coaches with his effective blocking.

The St. Louis Rams' Austin Pettis, right, loses the ball on a punt return as he is hit by Niles Paul last Oct. 2. The Rams recovered and Paul was charged with an unnecessary roughness penalty. (AP Photo/Seth Perlman)In the last three games of the season, with Chris Cooley on injured reserve, and Fred Davis suspended, the Redskins used Paul sparingly as a backup tight end. Apparently, Mike Shanahan and his assistants liked what they saw.

“Coach gave me a call earlier this offseason and asked me how I’d feel about switching to tight end,” Paul said in a phone interview Friday morning. “I told him, ‘I’ll play wherever you want me.’ I’ve done everything I’ve been asked, and I’ll keep doing it. I’m excited about the position change. I’m excited that coach has enough respect for me that he’d call me to ask me what I thought about it.”

Paul has attended all the tight end meetings of the Redskins offseason program this week, a development that 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen first reported Thursday evening.

Paul said he doesn’t yet fully know what his role will be, but he is focusing on learning as much as he can from tight ends coach Sean McVay and teammates Davis, Cooley and Logan Paulsen. The Redskins often use multiple tight end sets in their offense, and Paul has been asked to learn both the ‘Y’(or lead tight end) and ‘Tiger’ (more of a secondary/blocking end) positions.

There’s a degree of uncertainty with the Redskins’ tight end position. The Redskins hope that Davis – who was suspended for four games for failing multiple drug tests last season – can build on his production last year, when he recorded 59 catches, 796 yards and three touchdowns. Cooley was limited to five games (eight catches, 65 yards) because of a recurring knee injury, and it remains to be seen whether the Redskins are willing to carry him at his current cap figure of $6.23 million. Paulsen is a solid blocking end, but in two years has a combined 13 catches for 148 yards and a touchdown.

“I definitely think I can do it,” Paul said. “I’ve got the size and the mindset, so it’s not far-fetched to say I can do it. I’m picking up everything pretty well so far. But it’s still early, so we’ll just have to wait and see how exactly they’ll use me.”

Paul is listed at 6-foot-1, 224 pounds. But the muscular player, who at last year’s combine ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, said he played at 228 pounds for much of the season, and maintaining that weight was a struggle despite a religious exercise regimen and healthy eating. At one point, he reached 234 pounds, and consulted with the team’s strength and conditioning coaches, who took his body fat percentage and came to the conclusion that Paul was still at a healthy, lean weight.

“They said 234 was my natural weight, so I can bulk up a little more to play tight end,” Paul said. “They want me at no more than 238, but no less than 232.”

Cooley is 6-foot-3, Davis 6-4 and Paulsen 6-5, so Paul would be the shortest tight end on the roster. But he believes that he still can be effective, both as a blocker and pass catcher.

“Cooley and Fred were reminding me that Aaron Hernandez of the Patriots is 6-1, 245, and he’s definitely doing fine,” Paul said. “I play physical anyway. It’s just a matter of picking up on all the techniques, and I got a little taste last year, and obviously, coach thought I did well.”

Paul says that Cooley and Davis reminded him that Hernandez of the Pats is 6' 1"

Knowing that Shanny and Belichick are friends, I am thinking that the Pats inspired this move by Shanny.

I'm thinking... "what do we need to do to ensure that our dynamic quarterback always has a dynamic outlet??? How about 3 very mobile Tight Ends? It doesn't hurt that Paul has blocking skills...

^^ you might be right ... I'd like to think that Mike liked what he saw last season out of Paul playing the TE position

I also like the fact that we continue to widen the scope of the players we have - AND this guy plays with an attitude

Davis needs to show us a lot after what he did and Cooley's getting on

Bingo.

I actually really like the idea of switching Paul to TE. First, with the addition of some new WR's, it's a good way to keep him on the roster, as it appears the coaches like him. Second, as Trey eluded to, it will give RG3 another dynamic target in the passing game, especially when they use those two-TE sets.

I can definitely see Paul streaking across the middle or running down the seam hauling in passes from RG3. Mike and Kyle like using two-TE sets and they also like to split the TE out wide at times. I think Paul would fit that role beautifully.

It appears he's bulked up a bit, and we've already witnessed his toughness and physicality last year playing on special teams. And I seriously doubt adding a few pounds would have any adverse effect on his speed, especially if they're saying that playing at 234 lbs is more ideal for his body structure and type.

Having a pass-catching TE who can run a 4.45 would be hugely advantageous for this offense and would create major mismatches for the SS's and LB's who would have to try and cover him. If some of you will recall, Fred Davis was also once a WR who transitioned to TE back at USC. So I have little doubt the kid can do it and I actually like the potential and possibilities.

I don't get why everyone is so pissed at Fred, the dude smoked some weed when the lockout was in effect, so what? The dude can still play like a beast and that is all that matters. Irvin was a coked out retard and still managed the HOF so, Fred will do just fine as he always has.

^ I don't get what YOU don't get. The dude is ONE TOKE away from a long term sit down, imposed by the league. You don't have to like it. You don't have to agree with the league's position. The fact is, one more positive test, and he is gone. This WAS NOT his first positive.

Actually since he was suspended that means he was caught twice.

The NFLPA got one thrown out, that means he got caught three times

so you think we should not be concerned that this player made a choice that affected his team in a VERY bad way

please clarify this AND what the hell does Irvin have to do with this

are you implying that players can do drugs as long as they play well ... even if it means that they may be suspended

what are we missing here

I can tell this is going to help me get through this VERY boring few days leading up to the draft

I was thinking the same exact thing.

I personnally think 6'1" is too small to play TE in the NFL! Hernandez is listed as 6'2" at rotoworld, but looks bigger than that. I would rather have a slower 6'6" running down the seem. Heck Cooley is 6'3" and he is on the shorter side for a TE.
