Allen Park - In a shocking turn of events, it’s expected that an announcement will come from Allen Park soon to confirm that quarterback Joey Harrington will miss at least the following season after suffering a reoccurrence in a heart condition previously thought to have been treated. It’s said to be possible that this reoccurrence could cost him his career.
Harrington first underwent a procedure called catheter ablation on December 16th of 2002 by Dr. Claudio D. Schuger, director of clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, to treat supra-ventricular tachycardia, which had surfaced a day prior during halftime of a Lion’s game. Such procedures are said to have a 90% success rate when used to treat these cases.
The reoccurrence of Harrington’s tachycardia happened Tuesday in the organized strength and conditioning sessions at Allen Park while participating in voluntary drills. His irregular heart rhythm will make it impossible for him participate in most, if any, strenuous exercise, rendering him incapable of taking part in all practices and games. It is expected that he will undergo a more invasive procedure immediately; one that may result in far more recovery time than his previous treatment. Harrington will meet with the coaching staff after having a multiple week recovery period to reevaluate his condition, and to see if a comeback will be at all possible.
Joey Harrington passed for 2,880 yards with 17 touchdowns, 22 interceptions, and a completion percentage of 55.8% last season as a second year player. Fourth year vet Mike McMahon will assume the starting role in Harrington’s absence.
