Report: Redskins, Fins, Seahawks in on RGIII Citing league sources, Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com reports "at least" three teams, including the Redskins, Dolphins, and Seahawks, are "strongly considering" a blockbuster trade with the Rams to draft Robert Griffin III at No. 2 overall.
Team sources also tell Freeman that the Browns have interest in trading up, "though not as much as the other teams." While the Dolphins are interested "despite their Matt Flynn infatuation," the Redskins "remain the front-runners." Team officials label the Seahawks the "sleeper team" hindered by the prohibitive cost of trading up from twelfth to second. The three teams reportedly view RGIII as a "close facsimile" to Andrew Luck in terms of NFL potential.

If sources are correct, the Washington Redskins really, really want Robert Griffin III. And while, at first glance, the full bounty of draft picks they reportedly are willing to offer seems absurd, it might be exactly what the Redskins need to offer in order to obtain a much-needed playmaker for their offense.

On first glance, that seems absurd—that's a huge price to pay to obtain one player.

But Griffin is special, and the Redskins desperately need a player of his ability on the offensive side of the ball.

And this is probably what it will take from where the Redskins stand, especially considering the Cleveland Browns could offer the St. Louis Rams two-first round picks this year, the fourth and 22nd picks.

If I'm the Rams, I would say to Washington, "Do better than Cleveland." Let's take a look at the NFL draft value chart to see how this plays out:

The Rams' second overall pick is worth 2600 points.

If the Browns only offered their two first-round selections this year, that would be worth 2580 points (they would have to sweeten that pot most likely, given how dynamic RGIII is and the fact that top-five picks are even more valuable since the rookie pay scale was drastically lowered in the new CBA).

The Redskins' first-, second- and third-round picks (sixth, 39th, 70th) are worth 2350 points. Depending on how they finish in 2012, their offer could be worth anything from 2940 to 5350 points. In essence, the worse they are next year, the worse this deal is for Washington.




Let's assume they are right in the middle of the pack and have the 16th pick in the first round next year. That would make the total value of this deal 3530 points. Yes, they are overpaying, but if RGIII becomes a legitimate franchise quarterback, isn't he worth the cost?

I, for one, say he is. It's a gamble at this cost, but with other teams likely to clamor for Griffin, it's a gamble that the Redskins should take to acquire the dynamic quarterback.

That might seem like a steep price, but I tell you, I think that would be a steal.

We've pissed away so many 2nd and 3rd round picks, that I can't even keep track anymore .... so nailing down a franchise QB that is a young, grossly talented, and exceptionally sharp, solid character guy like this is worth 4 1's, so I'm praying it will be 1,2,3 and 1.

I wasn't on board initially with RG3, because I really hadn't seen much of him, nor any interviews. But now that I have, I'm sold 100% ... this guy is a can't miss ... he's too driven, too talented physically, and too sharp mentally to fail.

A QB with 4.38 speed? Smart, accurate passer ? Are you kidding me? 10 years from now Redskin fans will still be thankful for the day that we gave up 4 picks.

Like the Browns offer their two #1s this year and #3 next year vs. we offer a #1/#2 and next year's #1 or something. Its possible. I was just saying I don't think we're going to get any kind of best-pal-discount on the trade. We still have to make as strong an offer as any other team.

The real advantage I see is that Shanahan maybe has a better line of communication with Fisher because of their friendship. They could be talking about potential deals way before any other teams have a chance. Fisher could also be giving him a heads up on what other teams are offering, who else is in play, etc;

Forgive me, last year was the first time we got to watch the draft over here so I'm a little hazy on the politics of some of it.

So how does it work in our situation...? If Shanny and Fisher agreed to something it wouldn't be announced until the time would it...??? Or can we deal with them now and make an agreement that could be announced in advance of the draft...??

You need to remember that the media hype is in full force right now, fueled by RGIII's publicist and agent. There are better quarterbacks that will be available next year. It would seem wiser to me to draft of impact players on the offense and get the quarterback next year. It would have to be an agreement between Shanahan and Snyder to do this.
