Yep good to get that out of the way. Hopefully this is just the start of some moves to improve the o-line.

Interesting that it was the day after the lineman worked out at the combine. Maybe the coaches had their eye on a guy or two and just didn't feel there was an upgrade there if he was drafted.l

They'l be a cluster of player re-signings these next few days I reckon all over the NFL.

I don't think that'll happen at all. What usually happens is once Free Agency opens, players are able to go out and determine what their market value is. Once they've determined it, the agent comes back to the team to negotiate a deal.

Most teams want to re-sign their soon to be free agents that they would like to keep, BEFORE the market opens. I can see Gano, Lichtensteiger, Westbrook and Fletcher not hitting the market.frankcal20 wrote:I don't think that'll happen at all. Only because they feel they're going to get a discount. Look at what we did with Ryan Clark. We made an offer. He went out on the market and found someone who was willing to make more. Brought the offer back to DC ($500k higher for term of contract) and DC wouldn't match. Been killing us ever since.

you can't tell me that Carlos Rogers was going to play differently than what we saw - HE WAS NOT WORTH WHAT HE THOUGHT HE WAS WORTH
when a player like Clarke comes back and says I can get more and the Redskins don't resign him - it's most likely that in their estimation, the player is not worth it
you can't just keep every player who gets a better offer ESPECIALLY if he has not shown that he's worth more to your franchise
some of these players need to change to be a better fit with players around them on other teams
I hope these guys ONLY keep players that want to try harder NOT players that think they should get paid more

I would prefer we negotiate guys before they become FA's if we want them to stick around.

I don't understand what you are saying about Carlos Rogers. Are you saying he played a lot better in San Fran than he did here, and we would have had no reason to expect that? If so, I disagree vehemently. Apart from interceptions (the most overrated stat for corners) Rogers showed signs of being an elite player.
At the time a convincing argument could have been made that Josh Wilson was a downgrade. Now, we'll probably be fine with Hall and Wilson, but I certainly wouldn't hold it against a player for wanting more money elsewhere.
In the NFL money=respect. If a team offers you a lot less money, or a shorter contract they are basically saying that you're not worth it. This ties in to what I think your point is... but teams can be wrong, and the Redskins certainly were.

At the time a convincing argument could have been made that Josh Wilson was a downgrade. Now, we'll probably be fine with Hall and Wilson, but I certainly wouldn't hold it against a player for wanting more money elsewhere.

I think the problem with Rogers was that he wanted out. Whether he felt undervalued or just thought we were going nowhere, he just wanted to go.
My remark before was to do with those players that just want to re-sign and get on with things, they want to re-sign and the team wants them to re-sign (Rocca, Fletcher, etc)
I guess there's a lot less of them nowadays with the money in the sport now. I

I don't think he just wanted to go, and that was that. He wanted to go because the team didn't make signing him a priority.
Imagine you worked on a series of contracts rather than as a salaried, at will employee. If your contract was running out and your company didn't make retaining you a high priority... and other companies were competing for your services...

I don't want to steer the conversation too far away from Monty... so:
Not sure how I feel about this. Montgomery has been gaining some respect around the league as a solid, if unspectacular, center... I was hoping we'd upgrade at the position this offseason though. Wonder how much his contract is for.

Rogers wanted out of DC years ago. He used to always mention in the postgame that folks were giving him a hard time on the dropped INT's and that he felt he was pressing. Also said that he was making really good plays but some folks didn't appreciate what he did.

You try, but people are all different. Some want to stay and will sign, others are going to want to test the free agent market. If you're saying we should try with the players we want, I agree. I'm glad he's gone. He's a big ego and a bad attitude and a donkey's rear. good riddance. We need guys with character, not petty, small minded self centered morons who don't appreciate the great life they live. But as for Montgomery, we aren't going to have a line of 5 all-pro's and we don't need one. You need solid players like him as well. If we sign a RT and a LG, we could potentially have a very good line next year and even a little depth.

Your claim about the value of interceptions is ludicrous. I was long a defender of Rogers as a cover corner... but what makes a cover corner feared is interceptions. If a cornerback can't hurt you with picks... what prevents you from throwing in his direction???? No... a great cover corner who can't hold onto the ball NEVER earns the respect of offenses. While Rogers knocked down a lot of passes... the fact that they didn't become turnovers never gave quarterbacks a reason not to try. A GREAT corner does not get thrown at. I would have loved to see Rogers here... but he wanted more than he demonstrated that he was worth... he leaves... he gets his eyes checked... he gets contacts... he catches balls... that's on HIM... not the Redskins. I'm happy that Monty will be back and hopefully we will re-sign more of our FA.
Now to follow the off topic conversation.
CR wanted out for years and wasn't coming back unless we offered him stupid money.
He didn't get what he thought he was worth and had to settle for the only deal available.
He finally got his eyes checked, something the Skins had been trying to get him to do for years, and shockingly he can catch now that he can see!
He didn't want to be here because he didn't feel wanted. He wasn't wanted because he couldn't catch and refused to do anything to help that. He was the cause of the problems in DC! Had he gotten contacts three years ago, he would have still been in DC and would have made millions more I'm salary. We also would have won several more games.

Well, I think this is where the coaches have the advantage over our perceptions. The coaches can break the film down and know what Will is responsible for. Considering the injuries to the line, the rookie RB's, the crappy QB play and WR's who can't beat press coverage, it's going to be hard for us to know who is at fault for any given bad play. In addition, did the Colts offensive line magically start sucking? No. They had bad QB play and the plays took longer. If we get a capable QB, he could possibly make our offensive line better, or at least appear to be.
Do we spend big bucks on o-line when we could spend money/upgrade elsewhere and get the same result, while improving another position?
