How the Skins scouting dept improved....

MOBILE, ALA. — Scott Campbell sat alone on the metal bleacher in Section T, Row 29 of Ladd-Peebles Stadium last Wednesday overlooking the South team’s Senior Bowl practice through a pair of dark sunglasses. Wavy brown hair peeked over the rim of the same burgundy visor that distinguishes him on the Redskins Park practice fields each summer during training camp.

Campbell, the Washington Redskins‘ director of player personnel, made mental notes as he watched Washington’s coaching staff guide a team of college seniors through position drills. He has studied those and dozens of other prospects for months. It won’t be long before his evaluations help shape a draft class that absolutely must contain players capable of immediately contributing to a turnaround from last season’s 5-11 record.

This is another reason why Mike will be here through his entire contract. The brokenness of this entire organization ran deep, it ran way deeper than the play field, X's and O's... Wow. I'm glad that they're finally getting this part of the team up to par with the rest of the league.

Really good article, thanks for posting it. The 2011 draft class looks so good after this first year. It will be really interesting to see if that holds up over the next couple seasons.

I know the 5-11 season and the QB issues are frustrating to fans. Rightly so. But seeing the focus on things like quality scouting and building through the draft continues to give me hope that Shanahan is trying to fix this team the right way.

Only one person is left from our 2007 draft class and that's Laron Landry.... That's how putrid this entire organization was at drafting.

BIG thatnks for that link Chris - good info

 that is just a terrible indictment on what has been happening here

Like many fans here, I want a much better franchise than we've seen here - I understand why so many want to get a great QB - HOWEVER - we have so much catching up to do to - we need depth and experience and we have many areas of concern

we need all of the top 60 - 75 players we can get in the next few drafts and even then we need to have a much better success ratio than is common in the NFL

I'll agree that this FO has not been absolutely perfect in their judgements but they have done well all the same

hopefully they continue to add a bunch of young players with a great desire to do well

hopefully Davis and Williams understand where they stand with their teammates and really make an effort to show they want to be here
we cannot afford to have really good players making stupid decisions like that

No doubt we've had issues with the draft, but pointing to just one particular year doesn't really have much meaning. Particularly since we only had five draft picks that year. And before anybody goes blasting the office for only having five picks that year, Shanahan's Broncos only had 4.

By comparison, the Patriots drafted 9 players in 2007 and have ZERO left on their roster. Yes, the Patriots in 2007 were much better than the Skins so it would be harder for a drafted player to make their roster. However, outside of their first round pick that year (Brandon Merriweather) none of the other eight have done anything in the NFL.

Cool. I thought I'd heard of BLESTO so I did a little digging. It started as LESTO (Lions, Eags, Steelers, Talent Org.) in 1963 then became BLESTO a year later when the Bears joined. That YEAR CEPO formed. We joined that somewhere between 1964 and 1983 - can't nail it down - and it became United Scouting. CEPO/United evolved into The National.

I wonder when we left The National. :hmm: That would be interesting to know.

Then I found this:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... /index.htm

with key line: Money may be a crass consideration come game time, but it has its charms in beefing up a floundering team. To make ends meet, though, Allen seems to have neglected his old Redskins—indeed, some 10 veterans have not yet signed their 1976 contracts. Also, despite the Redskins' having the top NFL ticket price of $18, Allen has skimped heavily on training-camp expenses and dropped out of the CEPO scouting combine for a saving of some $100,000.

Here was membership as of 2008:

We are in BLESTO w/BUF,DET,JAG,MIA,VIK,NYG,PIT

Teams going it alone are RAV,CHI,CLE,IND,PAT,RAD

All others are in The National.

Landry is a soon to be URFA so you can't even count him. Shanny never said he was rebuilding, yet he's just about finish overhauling the roster he inherited.

Here's a breakdown of who is left on the roster from the Vinny C days.

Chris Cooley,Reed Doughty,Rob Jackson, Brian Orakpo, and Kevin Barnes are he only draft picks still on the roster that were Redskins before Allen and Shanahan came to town. That's 5 out of 21 draft picks on the current roster of 45.

There's 4 UDFA and Darrel Young is the only one in this group that was here when Shanny got here.

Of the 4 Players Traded for that are on the roster, only Santana Moss was here when Allen got here.

Mike Sellers,Lorenzo Alexander,DeAngelo Hall, and Anthony Armstrong are the only ones out of 16 Free Agents that were not signed by the Shanahan/Allen team.

That's less than 25% of a incomplete roster and I can see the total number of players on the roster from before Allen/Shanny, to be in the single digits by the time the season starts.

Sellers is the free agent that's been on the roster the longest, Cooley is oldest draft pick and Moss fits the bill as far longest serving player traded for... they all came in under JJG

When did we aquire London Fletcher?

Fletcher was also pre-Shanny, and like Landry is a soon to be URFA.

I only used the 45 players that are currently under contract.

^^ from this - I take it that we have 8 free agents

how many of these are restricted free agents as opposed to un-restricted free agents

Fletcher was a Gibbs signing.

2011 Redskins that are headed to free agency are:

LaRon Landry
London Fletcher
Rex Grossman
Tim Hightower
Adam Carriker
Kory Lichtensteiger
Will Montgomery
Rocky McIntosh
Kedric Golston
Byron Westbrook
Fred Davis
Donte Stallworth
Graham Gano

I believe Lichtensteiger is the only RFA, but Gano may be restricted too

If I'm the Skins, the highlighted players are those that I would re-sign.
LaRon Landry
London Fletcher
Rex Grossman

Tim Hightower
Adam Carriker
Kory Lichtensteiger
Will Montgomery

Rocky McIntosh
Kedric Golston
Byron Westbrook
Fred Davis
Donte Stallworth
Graham Gano

I think Golston is an ok back up aswell as westbrook..
Gano is the best available so doubt he isn't around.
Kinda sick of kickers coming and going, he's got the leg jus needs to work on his mental. + the blocks aren't all on him.

I'm not a pro on FA jus got some Madden experience...
Would it hurt to sign Hightower to a one year deal maybe two- then use him as trade bait to get the rams pick for less total picks from us? Assuming he's healthy of course and I know he isn't worth a lot but money we have picks we need mainly the 2nd overall pick this year

^^ that's what I'm talkin' about

Mike came in here with a plan and IMO was mistaken in his assessment of what it would take to get this franchise back to a competitive level

this franchise was in terrible shape and it wasn't just due to players and coaches

the whole franchise was badly managed and dysfunctional

these guys are putting it all together and hopefully will be given time to see the results

this franchise is now heading in the right direction and will be a whole lot better off when this FO is not here anymore

thanks again for the link Chris

NP!
It's rare the we get confirmation in regards to the level of dysfunction that this organization was and is currently working itself out of. This is why I think people are jumping the gun about Dan firing Mike after this season, next season or the following.

Snyder owes two people a lot of credit. He owes the combo of Bruce and Mike EVERYTHING for doing the dirty work for HIS mess. These two dudes are taking hits to the legacies to bail this franchice out. If Snyder doesn't see that, regardless of how much they're being paid (cus they would have got paid somewhere else, Snyder isn't doing them any favors), he's truly the epitome of all things we've come to hate about him. However, I'm choosing to believe that Snyder realizes this, hence his media absence (for the most part) and truly hands-off approach (the mcnabb deal is questions but since that, nothing).

The other person that Dan owes some credit to is himself. He needs to pat himself on the back for finally realizing (IMO) that he is and has been the greatest detriment to this organization, since day 1. His heart is in the right place but outside of that, he needs to be on his yact and not in the war room.

agreed - Snyder has done well by staying away and letting this FO get things straightened out
Snyder would be crazy to get in their way and I think he continues to stay out of things for at least another year and maybe 2

I'm just as frustrated as anyone about how long it's taken to get a good QB playing here - it's a combination of a lot of things
these guys will get things right and just need to keep doing what they've been doing for the past 24 months

2 more years here and we'll have a QB that knows how to win PLUS a young QB that is getting ready to be a great QB for many years

Can we even call him a GM? That's not a shot at you, but at him. Jimminy Christmas that guy was awful.

He was on Zorn's practice squad
keep:

Laron Landry(try to trade to rams in a package deal.)

London Fletcher (our BEST player and one of the best middle linebackers in the game.)

Tim Hightower (a great 2nd runner behind Roy Helu and we could use 2 backs sets sometimes.)

Adam Carriker ( great depth and rotational player, grade B starter ,played well this season)

Kory Lichtensteiger (playd well untill he got hurt.)

Fred Davis (he was like Cooley in prime untill the suspension, maybe even better?)

Dont'e Stallworth (great RedZone threat and good deep ball speed. and is overall pretty good.)

Will Montgomery (played well)
possibles:

Rex Grossman (maybe as a BACKUP)

Gano- bring in compitision in training camp great leg, many blocked kicks (but thats a 'notha story.)

dump: Byron Westbrook, Kedric Gohldston, Rocky McIntosh
