The draft and free agency, lets think about this.

RG3 I know sounds like a great option to many, but is the cost we would have to pay for him too high? I believe so...

We still have quite a few needs, in my opinion, too many to trade away multiple high draft picks and risk what may be a great quarterback in the NFL, or might not (look at our QB drafting luck in the last 20 years for examples) I think in the draft we look at beefing up our defensive backfield, adding some talent and depth to the o-line, and some depth in some major defensive positions.

As far as QB goes, I think we could and should go a couple ways, if Shanahan see's anyone he really likes as a late first rounder (trade down for) or an early 2nd rounder (trade down our first round pick if possible and still get who we want, and maybe pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick) and start there, look for that diamond in the rough while gaining draft picks. Or, we look at free agency, primarily Matt Flynn.

It will not, and I repeat this, WILL NOT, take a top 3 in the NFL QB to get us to where we need to be, that is if we take care of all the positions of need equally. Matt Flynn has worked under Aaron Rodgers for a little while now (someone I would really want teaching a QB on my team) and with proper protection, a solid run game (which we have the backs for it), and some good wide receivers (this part of our team is still suspect) coupled with a good defense to keep us in the game, or better yet, shut down opposing teams and give us great field position... we don't need to spend everything we have on a QB, we really don't.

So, looking at risk vs reward, spend away multiple high value draft picks on a QB that we can't really give the supporting cast he needs, and just hope he wins every single game for us. Or build the rest of the team up, and insert a good QB with a supporting cast to help him develop into a great QB.

So, which way is the right way to do it?

Which is the right way to do it? The one that gets us to a championship.

That's why this is such a huge matter of debate. there isn't one way to do it.

Let's look at the last 10 super bowl winning teams and how they got their QB.

Green Bay: Rodgers, picked mid-first round, sat for a couple of years behind Favre

New Orleans: Brees: drafted by san Diego with 1st pick of second round, released and signed as Free Agent by Saints

Pittsburgh: Rothlisbuger, drafted mid first round, started as a rookie

New York Giants: Manning, drafted 1st overall by San Diego, traded to NY for multiple picks, played mid way through rookie season

Indianapolis: Manning, drafted 1st overall, played from day 1

New England: Brady, drafted 6th round, played in rookie year due to injury

Tampa Bay: Johnson, drafted by Minnesota, traded for three picks to Washington, cut by Redskins, signed as free agent by Bucs

Baltimore: Dilfer, drafted high in the first round by Bucs, released, signed as free agent by Ravens

St. Louis: Warner, signed by rams as free agent after playing in the arena football league and bagging groceries in a Piggly Wiggly. Played as a rookie due to injury to the free agent (trent green) the Rams signed.

Denver: Elway, drafted first overall by Baltimore and traded to Denver for a multitude of picks. Played as a rookie

So what's the right way? clearly it's to either trade up and a draft a QB high, or get one in the middle of the first round, or wait till the sixth round, or sign an undrafted player, or you can trade for a QB or get in free agency, and then you can either play the rookie right away or have him sit and learn for a couple of years.

So it's clear what the Redskins must do now. Get a franchise quarterback by whatever means necessary.

Every last one of those had everything to do with scouting. Not to mention having an adequate support system in place for the player. I'm all about getting the team ready then get the QB. If you can do both, I'll take it.

There is no right or given way to get a franchise QB

one thing is for sure - the franchises that identified a QB that became great, ALL had an FO or NFL knowledge people in charge - we have not had that since we last had a franchise QB

this FO knows what they are doing and with no QB available that they really wanted they have elected to build up the other facets of this franchise - that looks like continuing here

this is not a bad thing as we can be a playoff contender without a great QB - AND WE WILL

WHEN this FO gets their QB - AND THEY WILL - the team will be ready to be a playoff and Super Bowl contender for year after year after year

right, and we were planning to choose a qb without scouting?

How many of those QBs came in with everything in place?
Certainly not the Mannings
Peyton came in for the worst team in the league, and went 3 and 13 the first year.
Eli came in for a team that was the fourth worst in the league.

Packers were 4-12 in Rodgers first year.

Brees came into a Saints team that had been horrible for years

Same with Elway

Rothlisberger, Dilfer and Johnson certainly stepped into to teams with great defenses.

So again, what's the best way to build a team? start with a franchise qb or add a franchise qb when you have all the other pieces in place.

There isn't one way to do this...

Many will say Theismann but in truth, the last franchise quarterback we had was Sonny Jurgenson or Billy Kilmer

Yeah I was kind of wondering the same thing. Coach Gibbs of course won with three different QBs. Let's see Belichick do that!!!

There is 1 right answer, it's just none of us know what it is, and not even the team will until they actually do it, and play it through. I just think if you look at risk factor, you take a HUGE risk betting it all on 1 draft pick and hoping that your top pick doesn't end up being a bust (in the last 10 super bowl qb's, most you mentioned weren't first rounders, or if they were, didn't cut it with their first team and finally made it elsewhere) by which logic we have better odds by picking up Matt Flynn.

Next, the low risk is to use this draft to really fill in the rest of the team (and I do believe it can almost completely be filled in by draft and free agency this year) and then next year we should have few needs, and if we don't have our QB answer yet, then we really spend what we got to spend to get who we want.

Biggest thing is, it takes a bunch of players a while to really mesh together before the team can be good. So filling in the team now will lead to a better future. With a QB, you can either drop him into a bad situation and really have a high risk of ruining his career, atleast with your team, or you can drop one into a good team that he can learn and develop in.

Regardless, Rex is not the answer, as a #2, sure, but NOT as #1. We need someone that can play now and get us a couple more wins this season, and really become one with the team we are building the following seasons. That I fully believe can be done in the late 1st to 2nd round (besides luck and RG3 theres no other high first rounders) or through free agency with Flynn or some other QB that makes sense for our team and how we plan on playing.

We have a good defense that will only get better, the beginnings of a great run game, and a solid 2 tight end set which btw works great for NE. We don't need a Tom Brady, we need an Alex Smith or a Joe Flacco, someone that is good, and can get it done when need be, and makes few mistakes along the way. Thats how our team is building up

Both Smith and Flacco were 1st round picks. As posted numerous times by others, drafting a QB in the 1st round improves your odds of success. If we don't fix the QB situation this year I fear we will have to write off the 2012 season and FedEx will have a lot of empty seats.

actually 5 of 10 quarterbacks were drafted in the first round or traded for on draft day by the team they won the super bowl with...

Among that list of 10 quarterbacks, there isn't a single one that meets the Matt Flynn model-- a backup quarterback, drafted in later rounds, that hasn't played more than 2 games, signed as a free agent.

And both Alex Smith and Joe Flacco (your models for what the Skins need) were both drafted in the first round.

If anything, the list suggests you are much more likely to win a SB with a quarterback drafted in the 1st round. 7 of the 10 were first round picks.

Um, 6 of 10 were first rounders, and 7 of 10 won the SB with their first team.

Another crazy idea from Walter Football:
Washington Redskins: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
Ryan Tannehill at No. 6!?!?! Am I completely insane!? I might be insane, but I don't think Tannehill will be drafted this high. Hear me out:

The Redskins will use this selection to acquire a quarterback. I have no doubt about that. They could deal this pick to the Colts for Peyton Manning. They could also move up for Robert Griffin. In the event that those two things can't happen, they may decide to move down to grab Tannehill in the middle of the first round.

So, who's a potential trading partner? How about the Bengals? They have two first-round picks, and I'm sure they would love to obtain Trent Richardson. Washington could move down to No. 17 and secure Tannehill at that spot.

If Washington doesn't move out of this spot, what can it possibly do anyway? None of the top prospects available make sense here. I considered Dre Kirkpatrick earlier in the week, but he predictably was arrested for pot possession on Tuesday. There's no way he goes in the top 10 now.

Pick change; previously Robert Griffin, QB
