Redskins hire Raheem Morris to be defensive backs coach
By Mike Jones
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris has agreed to join the Washington Redskins staff as a defensive backs coach, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Wednesday evening.

Morris’ hiring comes less than two weeks after Tampa Bay fired him and exactly a week after he met with Redskins’ brass about the position.

Tony Wyllie, Redskins senior vice president, declined comment.

Morris, who went 4-12 in his final season in Tampa Bay, will work to upgrade a Redskins secondary that produced only 10 interceptions in 2011.

Morris had interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings late last week but didn’t receive an offer.

The 36-year-old Morris has strong ties to the Redskins. During the mid-2000’s, he served as an assistant in Tampa Bay alongside Kyle Shanahan, and during the same time, Washington General manager Bruce Allen held the same position with the Bucs.

I just think that this guy will be very motivated to show that he's still got something to give to the game

our secondary is in for an experience - I think it will work out well for both the players and the defense :D

The Danny Gets his man again. I knew this was coming as soon as Jackson got the boot. Just surprised he took an assistant role rather than a D coordinator for the vikings.

That's the Danny money hard at work! This is a promising signing.. He coulda been an assistant to the HC or DC but took this to be apart of something BIG.

Vikes did not offer that position to him. He just interviews for it as far as we know.

He is a welcome addition. No problem with this pick.

He'll be gone within a year. Sadly. Mike put a clause or something in his contract allowing him to bail for a DC position if offered to him.

This was a great hire! We need to increase out INT. Morris ClAiborne at 6?

If we can't get RGIII, I'm all about this!

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, Claiborne is a stud. On the other hand, we've used so many first rounders on the defensive side of the ball in recent years, and at some point we have to start putting an emphasis on the offense if we are going to get that fixed.

The one thing Claiborne coming out does is give us more ammo to trade down because a lot of teams (Like the Lions) severely need dback help and we could be in a position to move back and get some value. I'm all about long term goals here and if MS is looking at FA/mid-round QBs, then this is the move to make b/c you're looking at picking up at a minimum of an extra 1st in 2013 and other picks in 2012 most likely a 2nd.

I like what you're thinking here frank - especially given the number of promising QBs coming out in 2013

We have to get a good young QB that can be great for 10-12 years - waiting a year is not that big a deal

this FO will continue to plan ahead and build and acquire the pieces we need so that when the future great is here and ready to go we'll have the all the weapons we need

one other thing I like is the attitude and accountability that we are now seeing from top to bottom here

having Morris want to come here is a good thing - I agree with Chris in that he'll probably do great and leave
that's really a good thing though

we're getting to be a place that players and coaches want to come to for all the right reasons

I think the scenario you described is unlikely. This year's draft is STACKED at cornerback. Claiborne, Jenkins, Minnifield, Denard, and Kirkpatrick could all be first rounders. If you consider safeties too, you can add Baron to that list as well. No real need for a team to trade into the top 10 for Claiborne when they could stay put and get one of the other guys.
