Redskins assistants Jackson, McCardell won’t return
By Jason Reid
Washington Redskins assistant coaches Steve Jackson and Keenan McCardell will not return next season, two people familiar with the situation said Wednesday night.
Attempts to contact Jackson and McCardell were unsuccessful. Tony Wyllie, Redskins senior vice president, declined comment.
Jackson, Washington’s longtime safeties coach, and McCardell, the Redskins’ wide receivers coach the past two seasons under Shanahan, were informed Monday they would not be offered new contracts. Jackson and McCardell, the sources said, were not among several assistants who received contract extensions at the beginning of the season.
Apparently, Shanahan intends to bring back the majority of the group that has an 11-21 record during his two seasons leading the organization.
Shanahan and his staff will lead the South team during the Senior Bowl on Jan. 28 at Mobile, Ala. It is unclear whether Shanahan plans to fill the openings quickly, the sources said.
Hired by Joe Gibbs, Jackson has been with the Redskins since 2004. He has coached safeties the entire time.
Shanahan retained Jackson after he replaced former coach Jim Zorn, who went 12-20 in two seasons. Standout safety LaRon Landry has credited Jackson with much of his development.
With Landry and O.J. Atogwe sidelined most of the season because of injuries, the Redskins’ secondary struggled at times while relying on backups. An area of strength for Washington beginning the season, safety is now a position of concern.
Shanahan hired McCardell, a former Redskins wide receiver, to be part of his first Redskins staff. McCardell has generally received high marks from players, and he had a key role in Anthony Armstrong’s surprising 2010 season.

I was never a fan of Jackson ever since Sean Taylor and Ryan Clark had issues with him. Surprised that Keenan is leaving though. We need to get some receivers before we start replacing the coaches. Maybe it wasn't performance based. Who knows.

He had a lot more to work with as far as youth goes at WR this year, not a lot of talent but guys like AAA and Austin took a step back from their 2010 seasons. Add the young guys unable to get on the field and it seems as if Keenan was doing the opposite of what Shanny was doing.

Hankerson looked good in his limited action before he got hurt, so McCardell should get some credit for that. And it's not like we invested seriously in the position. Armstrong (undrafted, IFL, second NFL team), Paul (5th round), and Austin (7th round pick) weren't exactly hot commodities or top prospects when we got them. Not saying he deserved to keep his job, but he hardly had anything to work with outside of Moss.

The two biggest positions we need is QB and #1 WR. Start fresh from all ends. Get a fresh WR coach
Morris is really going to help the secondary learn how to jump routes. Redskins D next year will be nasty!

What would even lead you to believe that they can't?
Also, I wonder why they let Keenan go? But, there's a lot that we do not see. No point in even worrying about it.

agreed Chris - there's so much more to all these moves
I do expect that Haslett and Morris will BOTH benefit from working together
I'll go even further and say that the OC and DC are consulted BEFORE an assistant coach is signed

Just keep egos in check and it should be fine. I read that Shanny is willing to void Morris' contract if he should find a new DC job or other promotion to another team.
Morris got bumped down but I'm sure he want to get back UP.

Why not Danny Smith? McCardle was the only coach (from the Zorn leftover years) that I felt was still doing a good job.

A pure guess is the WRs were not disciplined route runners and blockers.

You might be right. But, that's just as much of an indictment on the people picking the players as it does the guy coaching them. Keenan McCardell may very well have been doing poorly, but given his track record as an NFL receiver who did those things well, I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't be coaching it. I'm not broken up over it, just want us to get better players.

Keenan had nothing but some bums to work with, I can't say that from my POV I'd blame him at all.
Plus he had an outright King of all Bums throwing to his group.

We were 5-11, though, so somebody had to take the fall. Looks like it was McCardell and Jackson.

I understand that. But it sucks and it's not right. But that's life. I hope he catches on elsewhere.

I'm sure he will. He played in Jacksonville for a good chunk of his career and they are going to have a new staff, maybe that's a good landing spot for him.

I didnt feel McCardells vibe...something about him I did not like. He seemed to negative whenever I heard him talk and maybe because of good reason.

We can only speculate on the reasons why McCardell and Jackson were let go. McCardell’s receivers did not perform particularly well but he did not have great talent to work with, either. Injuries to starters LaRon Landry and Oshiomogho Atogwe certainly hampered play at the safety position.
The dismissals of McCardell and Jackson, however, apparently did not come totally out of the blue. According to a Washington Post report, several assistant coaches received contract extensions a year ago and the two now-former coaches were not among them.

Yeah, McNabb and Beck aren't the best guys to have as QB's

Well, we already have Jacksons replacement. That leads me to believe the guy they want as a recievers coach is currently on one of the playoff teams. Otherwise, I would think they would want to have that position sewn up before the senior bowl to evaluate talent. just thinking out loud.
