Redskins’ tight end Chris Cooley tried a new position, starting at fullback Monday night with Darrel Young injured. The eighth-year pro believes that he can continue to help if given more opportunities to line up at that spot.
Cooley hopes to continue to see some time at fullback off and on. He believes that as is the case with the team’s two-tight end sets, with him running pass routes out of the backfield and Fred Davis playing tight end, Washington would find itself holding an advantage over opponents.
Said Cooley: “It’ll create personnel problems just because we’re so versatile out of two tight ends anyway, that if I show our staff I can do fullback stuff and I can move around a ton, I think it naturally create personnel problems: what do you do, how to you play our two tight end sets?”
we do not need to use him in the rushing game - his talents are better utilised by passing the ball when we go to this formation
the hybrid position, for him at least, is a huge distraction to the defense
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
I think blocking on pa passes set up screens or fake hand off up the middle to a short route as well as actually taking the ball up the middle or off TE Davis is a great way to keep the defense guessing.. Not to mention all the in motion options te to full back full back to tightend. Man oh man there's a whol set of 20 some odd plays this can add. What a plus to get Cooley involved this way while still feeding Davis the ball. I can *dig it foooo shooo

Here is something we have lacked so far this season is a proper check down. If Cooley played that role, that would only help out Grossman and the poor line protection we've seen as well. If we have a viable check down option, that will not only keep an additional LB close to him but it should open up either the deep middle or the RB as an additional receiver. There is a lot you can do with him and keep in mind that he did excel as an HBack under Gibbs 2.0.
Didn't Gibbs invent the H back position? (I think)
Only fitting for our team to use the H back position. I think it is ideal for the offense we run. Another good way to utilize all our skilled players. We have to have Cooley and Davis on the field at the same time. The more weapons the better.

The "H" Back is a hybrid of a tight end and a full back (I think "H" actually stands for "Hybrid"). It was created by Gibbs (I believe that it was actually an expansion of a Coryell concept) as a response to the imposing presence of Lawrence Taylor, and provided the ability to have two tight ends on the field when needed. It helped some, but you can never completely shut down a player of that caliber... You can see that it may also be helpful in managing the effectiveness of a player like Demarcus Ware, as well...
You need an intelligent and pretty athletic Tight End, or a big and athletic Full Back with good hands, for this position, as it demands a very diverse skill set.

Good place to fake the fb dive play action he either blocks or runs a quick out.. So many possibilities which just that in its self creates problems for the D

Using Cooley as the H back in what otherwise is just a two tight end formation lends itself to all kinds of interesting run, pass and play action options. I'd like to see them utilize this some more moving forward. It could create some interesting miss matches for the opposing D.
I had posted this in one of the post Dallas game threads but it seems more appropriate posted here.
