First cuts?

On Aug 30th th Redskins will have to get their roster down to 80 players.
With the release of NT Thomas Weaver on Thursday that leaves nine more players to go.

Post your list of who you think should go in the first round of cuts and why.

Here's my list:

DL Jarvis Jenkins, to IR

KR Brandon Banks, with the emergence of Austin IR is BB's best bet to avoid the turk

DB Reggie Jones, was Mr can't get right last night, screwed up in pass coverage a couple of times and poor special teams play again last night (two out of three games ain't good  ). He just looked lost most of the night.

OL Sean Locklear, lined up against 3rd stringers and looked like Stephon Heyer against a pro bowler last night, need I say more.

WR Isaac Anderson, no chance to make the squad time to cut bait.

TE Tony Curtis, same boat as Anderson.

QB Matt Gutierrez, with one pre-season game left no need for five QB.

OL Donovan Raiola, may stick around until next cuts but I doubt it. The team lacks real depth and he can't get any playing time must be him.

K Clint Stitser, not going to win a spot with no real attempts in two game.

WR Malcolm Kelly, might be healthy enough by Tuesday to be cut but when is he ever healthy

I agree on all your choices, unless we go with the "suck for RR56" plan, in which case its;

Rex,
Landry,
Orakpo,
Hall,
Hightower,
Beck,
Austin,
Moss,
Armstrong.

I think they would be the likely leaders for the mutiny if the coach ordered the team to throw a game.

The first wave of cuts is fairly easy to swallow, none of those guys except Banks has done anything to make me even recognize their names. Banks is a hard call, I would love us to keep him, but I don't see it happening.

There is 0 chance Locklear gets cut. Besides, he actually set up a couple good runs. Not bad for someone who joined the team so recently. He is arguably our best backup lineman.

But most of his playing time looking like the doors in the Mall, so did Hicks for that matter. I figure one of them will be gone, with both Willie Smith and Corey O'Daniel having good camps. They'll cut him loose to give him a chanc to catch on with someone else.

Isn't Hicks a lot more versatile than Locklear? I guess it doesn't matter if neither can play.

Which is why Locklear is on the list of first cuts. They can cut Willie Smith or Corey O'Daniel (Corey plays G and T) when they go down to 53 let them clear waivers then add them to the PS.

If banks is projected game ready by week 1 we gotta keep him! I love Austin no question he makes the tea. I followed his blogs last preseason and am glad he is ready to step it up to that he will be in the mix this year- but if banks had the ball how many of those go further? To the house? He is speedy and illusive and electric to watch... He deserves a spot fo cho.

What a wonderful predicament to be in, having depth at wr that makes it hard to cut anyone. :-({|=

My list:
Stitzer
Gutierez
Anderson
McBride
Either Grant or Shannon
2 out of Torchia, Curtis & Schouman
Raiola

I think that gets us down to 80 with Moore still on PUP.

Here's my Ten cuts - just a guess based on nothing
I avoided the latest picks ups like Worthington and Curtis because I felt that if they were worth signing late, they must have seen something in them so they will wait until after the last preseason game.

Isaac Anderson 80 WR
Corey O`Daniel 61 G
Donovan Raiola 53 C
Derek Schouman 88 TE
Joe Torchia 86 TE
Dante Barnes 39 DB
Tyrone Grant 38 DB
Eric McBride 58 LB
Jeff Stehle 62 DE
Clint Stitser 3 K

Here's an article that might help those who are still deciding on their first cuts.

Predicting Tuesday’s Redskins 80-man Roster Cuts
The Redskins have to reduce their roster from 90 to 80 by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. According to Redskins.com, the Redskins currently have 89 players on the roster (with two of those on the PUP – LaRon Landry and Kareem Moore), and the dismissal of many of those players are obvious to most informed fans. This, then, is an exercise in grabbing the low-hanging-fruit. Here is a look at which players I see will be the first to be cut:

Clint Stitser (K) – Let’s be honest, Graham Gano has this job locked up, and kicker is not a position that we need an extra body for to prevent injury in the final preseason game.

Malcolm Kelly (WR) – Has been injured since he got here 3 years ago. He hasn’t played this preseason, and the front office isn’t going to pay him the near million dollars it would need to in order to put him on IR again this year.

Matt Gutierrez (QB) – He hasn’t seen action in any preseason game, and unlike Ben Chappell, he isn’t likely to go on our practice squad. Therefore, as the 5th QB on a team whose QB cast looks like a gimmicky replacements team, he is probably on his way out soon.

Isaac Anderson (WR) – For a team with 10 Wide Receivers on the roster, the rookie with no preseason catches or even a single recorded special-teams’ tackle is likely on his way out. The only way he sticks around is if the coaches intend on putting him on the Practice Squad, and choose to cut a different veteran at another position.

Derek Schouman (TE) or Tony Curtis (TE) – Both are 4 year veterans, but neither really has a chance of cracking the final roster. One may reside until the final cuts just to be a 4th preseason game body, but with Rookie Joe Torchia out of UVA available for those duties as well, at least one of these veterans is very likely to be cut. Important note: none of the three (Schouman, Curtis, or Torchia) have registered a catch this preseason.

Xavier Fulton (RG) – To be honest, there are 15 O-linemen on the roster, and Fulton is the only one that I haven’t heard anything (positive or negative) about coming out of Redskins Park. I also think that given that many of the Tackles on the current roster can play inside at Guard, and since an O-lineman is likely to be cut, I think that Fulton may be the odd man out.

Dante Barnes (CB) – The rookie hasn’t recorded a single tackle through the preseason, and with the shining of Brandyn Thompson (rookie 7th round pick) in practice and in preseason, the "other" Barnes CB is likely to be on his way out of DC.

Edgar Jones (OLB) – The 5th year journeyman probably has less upside in the coaches’ minds than even a rookie like Eric McBride out of Richmond. That along with the bringing in of Thaddeus Gibson, Jones is likely to be cut after registering zero tackles on defense or special teams through the preseason.

Jarvis Jenkins (DE) obviously won’t be cut, but he should be moved to the season-ending IR, which would make him not count against the 80-man roster.

I don't think that Kelly will be part of the first cuts based on Shanny's quote today that he hopes that Kelly plays in a few days.

Malcolm Kelly definitely won't be cut today. Basically, they need to wait for him to be 100% healthy before they can cut him to avoid an injury settlement.

When exactly DO cuts need to happen anyway? By midnight? By 4 PM?

Glad the Kelly era is finally over. Not that he was much of a distraction anymore, on the sidelines.
