1. Rex Grossman got more meaningful time with the starters than John Beck. They both finished strong after shaky starts, handling Baltimore’s blitzes well. Not a decisive victory either way.

2. Washington’s running game and Tim Hightower was the story once again. Hightower scampered for a 37-yard touchdown, capping a strong preseason run. (The starters won’t play much next week.)


4. The Ravens’ entire starting offense doesn’t look quite ready for the season despite the final score. There were lot of communication problems on the offensive line. Somewhere, the Steelers were watching and smiling.

Not a decisive victory either way.

Man oh man - I am not saying we are going to do very well this season but it is VERY encouraging to see us handle the Ravens tonight

I know that both teams had some key players that were not participating but there's no doubt that the Redskins CLEARLY handled the Ravens tonight

In the third, Flacco touched a 12-yard dart past two lines of Redskins defense to find Boldin in the end zone, knotting the score at 21.

Once the starters came out halfway through the third quarter, the Redskins put together a 97-yard touchdown drive, and both teams then traded pairs of field goals.

Flaco's pick was in the first quarter, Clemens was with 3 minutes left in the game while leading trying to run out the clock, so yeah I think I can be harder on Clemens than Flaco. But whatever, bring on the regular season!!

The Redskins’ starting defense, playing without inside linebacker London Fletcher and cornerback Josh Wilson, allowed 200 yards on 38 snaps.

BALTIMORE – Opinions and observations from the Redskins’ 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens Thursday.

*The first-team offense and defense for the Redskins played the entire first half before departing. The defense allowed 14 points (and scored a touchdown) and 200 yards and played 38 snaps. The offense scored two touchdowns and gained 192 yards on 28 plays.

*Rex Grossman’s numbers: Four drives (punt, punt, punt and touchdown), 8-of-15 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown.

*John Beck’s numbers: Four drives (touchdown, punt, interception, touchdown pass), 6-of-10 passing for 108 yards and one touchdown.

*Nice job by Grossman on the final drive of the half. He had completions of 18, 19, minus-3, 14, 13 and, finally, a 21-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss.

*DeAngelo Hall’s 52-yard interception return for a touchdown was a classic case of a cornerback reading the play and jumping the route. It’s a forte of Hall, and sometimes he gets bitten on a stop-and-go pattern. He got away with cutting back up field as well as quarterback Joe Flacco’s horse-collar tackle attempt.

*Defensive lineman Jarvis Jenkins was shaken up in the first quarter and sustained a sprained right knee. If he misses a lot of time, that would be a huge loss to the defensive line depth. It looked like Darrion Scott was taking Jenkins’ snaps, and it forced Barry Cofield to play in nickel situations.

*The first half had to be beneficial for safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, who started and made his preseason debut. To start the second quarter, he blitzed up the middle and pressured Flacco into a throwaway.

*Running back Tim Hightower’s 37-yard run featured something not seen from a Redskins back in the last few years (save for a couple of Ryan Torain flashes): out-running a defender to the goal line. Hightower showed his cutback ability at the start of the run

*Linebacker Brian Orakpo won’t get an easier sack than the one he had in the second quarter. Safety Reed Doughty blitzed to his outside, and left tackle Michael Oher thought he had help, so he gave Orakpo a shove before moving inside. That help was accounting for Doughty.

*Smart move by special teams coach Danny Smith to have Graham Gano squib a kickoff. The Redskins, like most every team, don’t do live special teams in practice, so the coverage teams need to get work.

*Up and down first half for rookie linebacker Ryan Kerrigan. The up: a sack, the down: two neutral-zone infraction penalties. Young fella was eager to get off the ball. Both penalties came on third down.

*Sav Rocca’s 63-yard punt in the second quarter was pretty much a perfect kick, a bomb that rolled out of bounds at the Ravens' 4-yard line.

*On Flacco’s 33-yard reception to tight end Ed Dickson, Redskins linebacker Rocky McIntosh was beaten in part because he didn’t look for the football.

*Grossman’s second stint was a three-and-out, and he didn’t have a chance on third down. Tight end Fred Davis was in the backfield to pass protect, and he didn’t so much as look at blitzing cornerback Lardarius Webb, who made the sack.

*Late in the first half, rookie DeJon Gomes worked with the starters, replacing Atogwe.

*Cornerback Kevin Barnes sacked Flacco when he was unblocked on a blitz that also rushed Gomes from the same side.

*Judging by the playing time, Roy Helu has the edge over Evan Royster for the final running back spot. Helu started the second half.

*Receiver Terrence Austin keeps making plays. On the second drive of the third quarter, he ran the same route (slant to the middle of the field) for gains of 15 and 28 yards and then scored on a 13-yard catch and run.

*Beck shrugged off an interception to drive the Redskins 97 yards for Austin’s touchdown. Beck was 5-of-6 passing for 75 yards on the possession.
