Oshiomogho Atogwe

oh-SHIM-a-go / a-TOG-way

I think it's important for us all to take a moment to practice pronouncing his name. :) Here are some practice sentences:

1.) "Oshiomogho Atogwe jumps in front of the pass and it's picked off! First down Redskins!"

2.) "Coming in for the tackle and Oshiomogho Atogwe strips the ball! Fumble! And the Redskins have possession!"

3.) "[Opposing running back] takes the hand off and BOOM! He's leveled by Oshiomogho Atogwe! That'll bring up fourth down!"

4.) "This pass is thrown over the middle and in comes Oshiomogho Atogwe to break it up!"

-----

And so on and so forth.

Okay, I'm fooling around a little but I do think it's important to learn how to spell and pronounce difficult names correctly (after all, I learned to spell difficult athlete names like [Doug] Mientkiewicz and Laveranues [Coles]!)

Here's some background on why you will want to remember him:
Grade: 76 | (Good Starter)

Comment: Atogwe is a ball hawking free safety with very good range over the top. He is fluid in his pedal and can extend the cushion while showing fluid hips to open and break on deep balls and has good foot agility in transition to drive on the ball thrown in front of him. He shows good route recognition as well as the ability to read the quarterback's eyes to get a break on the ball and a decent burst to close. He is not a real physical tackler but is not timid about inserting himself on run support and generally gets the job done. He will take some chances and gamble on his reads at times, which can result in giving up some big plays.

Can't wait to see this guy with Landry. I think our defense, once it learns the system this year, is gonna be dominant with the pieces they just put in place. Really looking forward to it.

Agreed. I can't wait to see our nice DL rotation we have get after the passer. Finally it looks as if someone other than just RAK might get to the opposing QB's. That should help out our secondary as well.

I think I will stick to O.J.

Those initials need to be rehabilitated anyway.

not so worried about the pronunciation either

just as long as the guys playing in B&G with the numbers 30 and 20 have themselves a great season

they are not names - they are just numbers

DON'T SCREW UP and GET THE JOB DONE

It's worth pointing out that this is precisely the reason Mr. Atogwe gave for wanting to be known by his name. Respect.

The players get respected by doing what they are paid a lot of money to do and doing it well

He's a part of a team

If the B&G jersey with the number 20 on it plays well I'll know who he is and the correct pronunciation of his name is not important to me

If I ever get the opportunity to speak with him I'll know how to say his name - that will NEVER happen
other than that he's a part of our secondary and I'm hoping he plays well

Right on. I just flat out can't wait to see Landry out there again! Easily the most exciting player on the team last year.

As long as there remain play by play and color commentators who pronounce it "O-RAP-KO", I don't think I'll worry about Atogwe's...

I have NO hope of them getting OJ's name right after the Colts P by P kept pronouncing our kicker's name as "Gone-oh." Sheesh. It's not like it's your job or anything to check pronunciation. Just wing it...

Lordy, there are people around here who still can't spell Brett Favre correctly after a hall of fame career - I think Mr Atogwe is several steps too far.

Why, 'cause the hall of fame running back O.J. went to jail for trying to get his own stuff back from thieves and punks?

You mean for being found not guilty by a jury of his peers?

I mean putting his business out there for everyone to see and consume prior to any verdict

Huh? Get over what? He was found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping and went to jail. I'm perfectly cool with that. 1niksder, I thought, was referring to something he didn't go to jail. What am I not getting over exactly?

But probably best to get this back on topic, yeah?

The FACT that he WAS found GUILTY in a civil court is also pertinent to many of us

love OJ but let's be honest - he got away with murder

I hear ya'. BUT found liable in wrongful death. Not found guilty. Different.

Appreciate the phonetics on OUR OJ's name pronunciation
