Stallworth agrees to terms with Redskins

Receiver Donte’ Stallworth is leaving Baltimore. But he’s not going far.

A league source tells us that Stallworth has agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins.

Stallworth was suspended for all of the 2009 season after pleading guilty to felony DUI manslaughter. He has played for the Saints, Patriots, Eagles, Browns, and Ravens.

He contributed nearly 700 receiving yards to the Patriots 16-0 season in 2007.

I think that this is a good second tier WR signing depending on the the details of the contract. Having veteran wideouts in camp can't hurt when you have a bunch of young guys. If he makes the team because of outstsanding play, I say great. I just hope we don't do the Galloway thing again and keep him over a rookie that plays special teams and shows promise as a wideout.

I was a fan of his in college. He has good hands and decent speed. I thought his carrer would have been much better than it's turned out. Hopefully he'll contribute here.

This should be a near veteran's minimum deal, with some incentive that push the deal up if he performs.

I bet he's just going to be murder on defenses this year...(sorry, couldn't resist).

Could be okay based upon contract.

Donte could be a bit of a big-play type player if he catches on. The guy has some speed to him, he's not a bad player. He got caught in a numbers game in Baltimore.

Why did we sign a murderer?

From what was reported, it really sounded more as if it was a horrible, horrible accident. It wasn't murder by any stretch (not premeditated), Stallworth showed genuine remorse and did really all he could in his power, etc. Doesn't change the fact that someone died (and Stallworth was the proximate cause), of course, but it wasn't as if he planned this out.

Quoted for Truth.

Its hard to rationalize the taking of a life as anything but murder, but the fact is, he didn't murder that man. He is the reason he is dead, and that just isn't the same thing. I do not view this as meaning he has no character and is a scumbag. He made a mistake, a horrible horrible mistake, that resulted in the ultimate price being paid by another person. He made a poor decision and will have to live with for the rest of his life.

The man was crossing a causeway outside of a crosswalk at 7:00 am in the March in Miami. This doesn't excuse Stallworth driving while over the legal limit, but Donte didn't run off the road or run a traffic signal and hit someone. His good demeanor and behavior following the case is why he got a 30 day sentence. This case does not reflect bad character on Stallworth. He served his one year suspension by Goodell without complaining and has stayed out of trouble since.

The news release from the the Miami-Dade prosecutor:
“Every case that we prosecute, especially those that involve the death of a human being, is closely scrutinized to ensure that a fair and just resolution is reached for all parties,” said prosecutor Katherine Fernandez Rundle. “We have specifically looked at the unique facts involved with this charge, Mr. Stallworth’s excellent pre-incident history of community service, abundant references that attest to his good character, his lack of any traffic violations or criminal convictions, his full and complete post-incident cooperation with law enforcement, and his willingness to accept complete responsibility for his actions.“For all of these reasons, a just resolution of this case has been reached,” Ms. Rundle added. “The terms of the plea have been agreed upon between the State Attorney’s office and the police, and has been extended with the full endorsement and consent of the Reyes family, who believe that this plea and its timing are in the best interest of their 15-year-old daughter, the sole remaining child of Mario Reyes. Although no sentence can ever restore Mr. Reyes to his family, the provisions of this plea will provide closure to them and appropriate punishment for Mr. Stallworth’s conduct and the effects of his actions that night.”

^^ +1... anyone... including respondents in this thread... who thinks this is something that couldn't happen to them is living in another reality. Stallworth immediately took full accountability for his part, and did what he could to make it right. The bottom line, Stallworth has always been stand up, prior to and since.

in this case, cynicism is misplaced (and, trust me, no one is more jaded than I)

If Stallworth catches on to the system and learns the offense I don't see any reason that he can't become a quality #2 WR. Hell I'm still more concerned about us not having a real # 1 WR

First post here and yes I am an huge UT fan but I am still SMH over this signing. I do not understand why we need his style of WR on the team now. I would be ok with it if it meant we gave up Albert's worthless butt but we did not. I question more and more EVERY day the way that my beloved Redskin front office is heading

Good post CT, cause people act like it wouldn't happen to them or someone they know.

Don't know why this was done. This guys has 2 receptions since 2009. I feel like the skins are doing with WRs what they attempted to do with RBs last year --- find lighting in a bottle. Didn't turn out very well last year, and I don't see much changing this year. There is a reason teams don't want these guys.

Ravens couldn't afford to keep Stallworth, simple as that.

Check out 105.7 (Bmore radio station) and you'll hear about it. They didn't want to cut Mason and Heap either but they had too.

I still like Stallworth and Moss as opposed to overpaying for Santonio Holmes right now. Holmes is a stud, but let's get serious. We have an o-line that is a work in progress at best and nobody is quite sure who the QB is for certain.

Good points bro.. and also we did draft Hankerson who's not only tall but very fast as well. Armstrong has proven he can get downfield pretty fast, and we already know what Moss can do.
