Redskins have $26 million in cap space, can add more
Posted on July 15, 2011 by Rich Tandler
Bruce Allen has said that the Washington Redskins have the ability to be aggressive in free agency and a calculation of their salary cap number shows that this is true.
As of now, they have a salary cap number of approximately $93.3 million. With the salary cap widely expected to be about $120 million, the Redskins will have $27.6 million in salary cap space to work with.
They have the ability to clear out more space if they want to; in fact, it seems likely that they will. Releasing or trading Donovan McNabb ($4.75 million savings) and Albert Haynesworth ($3.4 million) would bring them up to $34.8 million in cap space. More savings are available if the team releases such players as Maake Kemoeatu ($2.5 million).
Not all of the cap room will be available to spend on free agents. Some if it will be needed to sign the 12 players the Redskins drafted in April, some should be set aside to cover any injury needs that may arise during the year and the team almost certainly will look at contract extensions for key players like LaRon Landry and London Fletcher.
A new element in this CBA is the cash salary minimum.

How much will be saved by releasing Rabach?

1Nik, do you have a line on what the new salary structures are going to be? I know that I read somewhere that the rook salaries are going to be roughly 1/2 what they were last year (the top 10 was mentioned in this context) so I was wondering if you had enough information to have a guiesstimate on what the rooks are going to cost us which would give an idea on how much we had left over for FAs....

i heard on the radio (obviously not confirmed since nfl hasn't opened up shop yet) that we may actually keep FatAl and bench him.. I was like
will cutting him or keeping him affect the cap for us?

I've heard that for a while now, and I could see mike doing it. Haynesworth is due $5.1M in 2011 (none of it is guaranteed because AH was stupid last off-season), so keeping him won't hurt the cap. Al wants his freedom but Mike doesn't want him in Philly with his old coach. They can sit him until he gets his act together but his contract might be over before that happens. Mike can wait until he gets a offer that he likes or he can just hold on to him. Al can always buy his way out of the deal for about $16M which works for me. That money would be a cap credit for a uncapped year

The proposal suggests five-year deals for first-round picks including a trigger that would “push the fifth year to 150 percent of an average starter’s salary at his position, with a floor of $6 million and a ceiling of $12 million” for the first eight picks.
I'm guessing they will spend about $13M in cap space on the rookies, the rookie wage system determines the length of contracts and what the players are paid in year 5 (New CBA will allow players to become FA after 4 years).
The rookie wage system allows for five-year contracts, with a team option for the fifth year, if the option isn't picked up the player becomes a free agent. If the team option is exercised, in the fifth year for the top 10 picks would receive a salary equal to the average of the top 10 player salaries at their respective positions. That money would be guaranteed if the option is exercised after the third year of the contract. If the team option is exercised, in the fifth year for picks 11-32 would receive a salary equal to the average of the Nos. 3-25 salaries at their respective positions. That money would be guaranteed if the option is exercised after the third year of the contract.

The Salary cap will be about $120M
In the past it didn't matter how much you spent as long as you came in under the cap, so some teams would be at or near the cap just like the Skins. The Redskins normally spent whatever they needed to and fit it under the cap by reworking other contracts while teams like TB spent as little as possible. Currently the Redskins have about $73M tied up this year and only have about 54 players under contract, TB has about 70 players and only about $60M spent for 2011. The new rule will require teams to spend between 89% to 99% of their cap, after 2012 it will locked in at 95%. This means ALL teams must spend about $108M this year, if not they won't be able to pocket the money. They will have to spread it out among the players on the roster at the end of the season.

Nothing much to add, just not sure you get your proper "thank you's" often enough. So, thank you, 1niksder.
Also, I think I'm coming around to the "Sit Haynesworth until he steps up and plays or until his contract expires" line of thinking. If we're not getting what we paid for (which we're not, no matter what he does at this point), then the next best option is to screw him as much as possible. So long as we don't need his roster spot.

Yep Emoses, I'm wit you bro.. At first I was like heck no, get rid of um.. but since 1Niks broke it down I'm all in favor in making the punk sit this year doing absolutely nothing. At least by sitting doing nothing he's not on the ground like a beached whale while a QB (Vick in paticular) runs around all day and finds someone open.
.. gosh I really despise that guy.

He's got a court date in Aug.... That's a part of camp that he'll miss.. It's not grounds to suspend him but it's part of a pattern. I believe the Redskins are waiting a reason to "Keshawn" him, then he won't even be in the locker room. Not that it matters because the Locker room already knows what he is

1Nik, unfortunately, at least under the old CBA, the worst that they can "Keyshawn" him is four weeks which "coincidently"

is what they did the last four weeks of last season. After he was suspended, albert's camp claimed that he was never written up. I bet he is written up each time he refuses to pay his assigned position or refuses to turn his cell phone off. There might be a lot of fines coming his way as well.

They were limited to 4 games last year because it was the tail end of the old CBA. They will still be limited to a 4 game max but with him missing parts of camp, he can be deactivated until he is ready to play, with his court docket the more time he misses the longer he'll be inactive (dumb dumb should have settled... he knows what he did and it's going to hurt in the end). Shanny is just waiting him out.
Not being in camp for back to back years is a case for the Skins, last year it cost AH his $5M guaranteed this year and that was his choice, now he's in the courts during times that he should be at work. It's the same thing in the end (he's not doing what he's being paid to do).
First year players are deactivated for the whole season all the time, they spend the whole season on the roster, praying they don't get cut. Fat Boy may ride it out wishing to be cut. He'll get his $5M but with his court deals he could probably use the $400,000 that he'll miss out on(his loss a lot of WO bonus money last year too).
By week ten he'll be begging to be on the active roster, two weeks later Mike will find a way to to suspend him for the last 4 games again.

I have a feeling that if Albert isn't traded, and traded for what Shanny wants, what you wrote is probably the scenario that will happen.

I think we're about to find out what it's like to have guys that have a plan and know what they need and when you couple that with an owner that will fully support these guys financially, you begin to see the possibility of having a decent franchise again
we are very fortunate to have these guys in charge here
