Taylor or Winslow

Another expert's opinion - he favors taking either one with a top 5 pick even though S/TE is not normally taken this high...

We should take either Taylor or Winslow?

Wow, this guy is really going out on a limb here. :)

Can anyone deny the impact that Roy Williams has on the Dallas defense or Ronnie Lott had for the 49ers. Also, I think that Tony Gonzalez, Todd Heap and Jeremy Shockey are used by their respective teams as a key part of the offense. The times have changed and if a TE or Safety is as special as these two are you would be a fool not to take them because historically you wouldnt take either position in the top ten.

Skins75, while you have a partial point with what you just said, I've gotta argue that having a good TE/S isn't as good as you make it sound.

For instance, half (1) of your Safety examples in Ronnie Lott aren't part of the "times" that have changed. . .he was a playmaker but certain safeties have always been big playmakers.

As for the TEs, well, Todd Heap isn't that great of a gamechanger, Tony Gonzales is just as much a receiver as tight end (I'll give you that one), and Shockey. . .well, Shockey is a freak.

You have a good point or two, but how many *more* RBs, QBs, and WRs have been selected and have been playmakers? Rasby is a good fit for a Gibbs blocking TE, and Bowen/Ohalete might very well thrive under Williams' command. There is nothing to suggest (right now) that simply grabbing one of these athletes will keep us from looking like 'fools.' What about the weaker spots on our team, like, oh. . .say, our D-Line?

Todd Heap is the leading receiver for the Ravens. If they had a QB and some WR to go along with, he could be the same kind of weapon as Tony G. and Shockey. BTW we DO have the QB and WR which would allow us to properly use a game-changing TE.

As far as Safety, look at the Safeties for the top defenses and tell me they're not important. Ed reed, Lawyer Milloy, Roy Williams, Dawkins ...

You are absolutely right. My comment was not that we should or shouldnt take Taylor or Winslow it was that if you dont have glaring needs somewhere else dont pass on these players just because they happen to be a TE or a safety. I for one have always stated that we need to trade down. I agree that we need DL help. But there are NO DTs or DEs worthy of the #5 pick. So if the offer is not right...then I say take Taylor. We have improved the line this year and with Greg Williams using different schemes to get to the QB instead of just Cover 2 bulls**t that alone will make a world of difference.

Trading down would surely be tempting but it will be dayam hard to pass up on Taylor if he's sitting there at #5!
