SI lcame up with the top 38 best group nicknames in sports, The Hogs at #17 was the highest listed Redskins group with The Over the Hill Gang at #26 and the Smurfs came in at #33, but the Fun Bunch and the Posse failed to make the list.

Seriously? Silver Crush number 1? I get "Orange Crush" - they made it to the Super Bowl, but yet are ranked waaaay down the list. Silver Crush? When were the Lions crushing anybody besides the 50's and early 60's?

I also take umbrage with "Electric Company" beating out the Hogs, Over The Hill Gang, Smurfs, Fun Bunch and for that matter a lot of the other nick names that are listed after it.

I would have taken issue with The Hogs placement and leaving of the Fun Bunch & The Possee.

Then I got to their Top 5 and realized that this list is totally useless. The Silver Crush makes the entire list retarded. No Steel Curtain in the Top 10?? But the Detroit Lions line is #1.

Epic Fail.

Definitely a nonsense list... top name is for a group that hasn't even played together yet...

I don't think these are ranked #1–38. They are just the 38 best group nicknames. And I took "Silver Crush" more as an introductory entry than anything else . . . personally, I doubt people 20 years from now will remember that name.

I gotta say, getting three entries in a list of 38 that covers multiple sports is pretty good. I just skimmed through the list and the only team that seemed to have as many were the Yankees, which is understandable.

After reading the caption with the Lions nickname, Irn-Bru, I think that you are right that this is not a ranking but a photo gallery of famous nicknames plus one that is not famous and has not been, as of yet, accepted by the fans. By the author, leading into the other names by saying, "... here are some other famous group names," he is implying that "Silver Crush" is famous along with the following nicknames. I am sure that the SI.com author of this list knows what famous means, so why make such a ridiculous statement to introduce his list? OK, I get it! The goal is to get folks to come to the site and read the list, so as misleading as that statement is and as misleading as putting it into a ranking format is, the goal is being reached. Got to hand it to the author.

So with all that being said, looking at the positive side and not looking at it as a ranking, to get three on the list out of hundreds that were probably considered, that is impressive.

Below is the misleading introductory words and an article from a Detroit website commenting on the coaches choice of "Silver Crush."

"In June 2011, Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz sent a tweet to fans asking them to nickname the team's defensive line of Ndamukong Suh, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Nick Fairley. Some of the suggestions included The Dis-Assembly Line, Detroit Pride, Blue Thunder, Motor City Maulers, Motown Madmen, Motor City Mayhem and Detroit Muscle. In the end, Schwartz chose Silver Crush. While it remains to be seen whether the name will stick, here are some other famous group nicknames."

Lions choose lame nickname “Silver Crush” for the D-Line
06/02/2011 By Steve P 3 Comments
Detroit Lions Head coach Jim Schwartz has been on a mission since last month to anoint his D-Line a nickname. Last month, Shwartz tweeted, “I’ve heard a lot of people suggesting names for the Lions’ front four. Send your ideas. Whoever has the best, gets an autographed fball.” Today he announced the winner, and it is “Silver Crush”, with “Dis-Assembly” line a close second. Other notable mentions are “Non-Stop Motors”, “Detroit Pride” and “Ghost lamp Darkness”. Schwartz picked “Silver Crush” because it acknowledges the history of the front four for the lions in the 1980’s.

The Lions D-Line of Ndamukong Suh, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Nick Fairley have done absolutely nothing to deserve a nickname. Once again we put the cart in front of the horse, and make a big deal out of nothing. Looking at the bigger picture, the Lions need to play better defense. A nickname will not help us win a game, or gain respect from our opponents. Fans have flooded Tom “The Killer” Kowalski twitter account enraged by Schwartz’s choice. They feel that it is too close to “Silver Rush” and ripoff of “Orange Crush”.
The D-line have not played a single down with each other, and we are already crowning them as winners. I know Schwartz is bored with the lockout, but lets hold-off on having contests trying to come up with a cute nicknames for our D-line. Suh & company will be great, but lets at least having a winning season or get a wild-card berth before we jump to conclusions.

Man, people sure do love overreacting to stuff. Like Irn Bru said, this isn't a ranking of 1-38. "Silver Crush" is the introduction and then subsequent nicknames are in ALPHABETICAL ORDER. Notice that the group before "the Hogs" is the "Harvery Wallbangers" and the group right after is the "Idiots". The whole list is this way, in no way is it a ranking.

It's clearly not ranked... that said, that Redskins nicks were included X3 among 38 in all of American sports going back many decades... that's pretty cool.
