Haslett talks about Haynesworth
The Sports Xchange
June 7, 2011

Life for the Washington Redskins with defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was well-chronicled last season.

Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett explained just what it was like during a recent appearance on 101 ESPN Radio in St. Louis.

Said Haslett, "He can do almost anything he wants. He doesn't want to do anything. To me that's the issue. He's one of those guys you walk in a meeting and you tell him, 'Put down the phone.' The next day you have to tell him to put down the phone. The next day, you tell him to put down the phone. You tell him, 'Don't read the newspaper in meetings.' The next day you have to tell him the same thing. It doesn't stick; it's an every-day thing."

Despite that, Haslett said he genuinely likes Haynesworth. He said, "Do I like him. I love the kid. I think he's a good kid, I like talking to him. He's a good person. He's a heckuva football player if he wants to be. He just didn't want to play in this scheme. He didn't want to play in the 3-4. He didn't want to do the things we wanted. Then we said, 'OK, if you're not going to do it, let's not do it. Let's play nickel, play the 3-technique.'

"Then, it got to the point where he said, 'I don't want to play first- and second-down nickel. I just want to play third-down nickel.' Oh my God, you're relegating yourself to 10-15 snaps a game. Then after that he didn't want to do the blitzes, he just wanted to rush. It got to the point where it didn't work out and became more of a distraction."

Still, Haslett believes Haynesworth can still be an excellent player.

Said Haslett, "Is he a good player? Yeah. Will he play for somebody in a four-man line and be a great football player? Yeah, I think he will be."

I just don't see how this will end well. Unless Haynesworth has some sort of come to jesus moment and shapes up.

Why is that not surprising to me in the least? A 100-million dollar man and he can't be bothered to do the minimum, much less max out what he's capable of.

Everyone continues to say this about him (team members and coaches) even while they say he's clearly not been putting in the effort. I do find that interesting, though I'm not entirely sure what it means.

Horrible. If this is true — and based on what we were seeing last fall, what we've heard from Haynesworth and other players, reports, and the coaches, I'm having a hard time finding a reason we should doubt it — if this is true, it's just a tragedy. What a waste.

I'm having a similar reaction as you. The statements about Big Al are very odd and don't really make much sense. He's not doing the things that a good teammate should do, but he's a great guy and we really like him. Huh? It would seem that if a player wasn't contributing to the team, not taking things seriously, etc., that his teammates and coaches would be upset about it, but they almost seem to be shrugging it off. The only thing I can think off, and it's purely speculation, is that they blame the front office/HC for some part of this, and not just Big Al. Otherwise I just don't know what would explain it.

This was a young guy with a HUGE ego and an attitude problem before he came here.

Can a potential $100 M contract ...

sorry ...

Can a real $40 M contract mess up with a young player's head and his ego???

You BET your last penny on it.

ANYBODY really needs to be very well centered in his mind and his values to be able to handle that kind of money and recognition.

But a good kid and a good person, that people liked talking to him. He was a pretty good D-lineman too, but he thought he was worth more than what he was getting. It actually made him a better player.

Actually about $35M but you'd be as rich as he thinks he is

He took a course so he'd be ready to deal with that kind of money. Mr. Russell had worked for Mr. Davis so he didn't charge Fat Albert for the course. It appears he didn't use his cell phone or read newspapers in Mr. Russell class

When Fat Al goes to another team and he is finally gone, our players will then open up about how garbage this guy was.

Right now they still need Fat Al to come across as manageable in the right scheme so somebody takes a stab at him.

How he handled it makes perfect sense. It's not a locker room conversation, it's in the media who have no sense of perspective and everything he says will be repeated and heard by the NFL who are well aware of this story including future players the team might like to sign to play under Haslett. So, he balances:

1) Making clear why the team suspended fat Al specifically and ending the lame argument of many (including on this board) who argue it was just ego between Shannahan and Lard Butt. Their legs are now kicked from under them.

2) At the same time, undercut it just being an attack by referring to a personal like of Al. Since it's personal like, it doesn't undercut his performance story. By saying it, it sounds less like he's just covering himself or hates Al.

I thought that the first time I read it, I don't see how that was a mystery. Yet some who insist on using anything to attack the team, including on this board, will STILL find a way to spin it to bash the team with it. Haslett showed them for who they are too. He did a great job with this.

How does a guy get away with this? I know we suspended him for the last 4 games, but I honestly feel they should see if they could file some sort of grievance and get out from under the contract. I could just imagine how well it would go over at my job if I told my boss, "I don't feel like submitting my reports today, or tomorrow for that matter. Actually, to tell you the truth, all I really want to do is come in and seach for porn on the internet, grab some lunch, and go home. We cool with that?" I'd be collecting soda cans.

There are 2 teams that I hope Haynesworth is with for entertainment sake = The Redskins or the Eagles

The Eagles' wind sprints, which EVERY player has to complete are reportedly even more difficult than Shanahan's - GOTTA LOVE IT

We all know that the fat man will not show up in any sort of shape and it will be fun to see this tub having to go through the basics with Mike & Jim again after how he treated them last year - I sincerely hope that he's here and that Mike makes ALL of our players run wind sprints and conditioning tests to find out who really is any sort of shape after this

I think there are going to be a lot of players who show up that are not in shape and the bigger guys especially

the 'workouts' that we've been hearing about are just about useless when compared to OTAs and off season conditioning that is run by the coaches and the NFL trainers - there are going to be a lot of players that are hurting and trying to get in shape in a short amount of time - Haynesworth will be a lot of fun to watch :D

we are quickly going to see which players really made the effort to stay in some sort of football shape and be ready when this mess gets resolved - I hope the coaches cut anyone that hasn't got the drive to be as good as you can be - personally, I hope a lot of players show up out of shape and get their asses kicked by the strength and conditioning guys

get the deal done NOW - let us see who this fat boy is going to try and play with

Haynesworth ain't worth anything

Exactly. And a great demonstration of how Haslett did a great job with it. He kept the question on AH where it belongs. Had he made it sound personal there would still be questions coming to him or to Mike about if it's somehow personal or ego. Haslett removed that and put the question squarely on AH. And the question is exactly what you asked. They didn't single AH out, they took a lot of abuse from him.

This fat waste may not have any trade value and in that case I hope they keep him here and make him miserable

I wouldn't just let him go, I hope they work him out some in the July heat

he's not going to take up a roster spot - he'll be gone by then but he also is not getting anybody else to pay him to show up and hope that all this 'stuff' about him is not true - good luck :D

Some players might not wait....
“You know a lot of stuff unfortunately that you hear is true, it is,” Holliday said in an interview with Pickled Hogs Radio. “Here’s a guy Albert Hanesworth, the disappointing part of Albert is this guy could be one of the most dominating defensive players to play the game. . . When you go on the field I just need to know that I’m going to get your best effort. You are going to give me 100%. And I can depend on you and you are going to be accountable and I’m going to give the same – that’s all I can ask. And that’s been my only problem with Albert, cause that has not been the case.”

Right, but the entire nation saw that. He also mentioned that he could be one of the most dominating defensive players to play the game... Just saying that is enough to cover anything else he says regarding the guys character. Teams may take a shot if they run a 4-3 thinking if they keep him happy he will be a monster.

From a coach it makes sense, but some players have said similar stuff about Haynesworth. Who knows, maybe off the field he's a really nice guy.

 I think you're kidding but ...

I'm sure he's a really nice guy - I mean how could anyone think that all the stuff about him is really factual - he's always done the right thing, he's never given any indication that he .....

C'MON MAN - this guy's a low-life :puke:

Yeah off the field I could see him being a nice guy as long as he isn't driving in the city (where he may be forced to hit another driver in the face), or the highway now that I think about it (because he loves driving fast and don't believe in speed limits), On public waters is out of the question because of that same love of speed, and we all know he can't be around anything that provides customer service unless the females go bra-less. Yeah I could see him as a nice guy
