Report: McNabb refused to wear a wristband with plays

As the marriage between the Redskins and quarterback Donovan McNabb moves toward an inevitable divorce (annulment may be the better word), our friends at the Sports Junkies on 106.7 the Fan in D.C. have added a little grease to the fire.

According to the Sports Junkies, citing multiple unnamed sources, coach Mike Shanahan asked McNabb to wear a wristband after he struggled to remember plays. McNabb declined, explaining that it would make him look stupid.

Per the report, owner Daniel Snyder became furious with Shanahan when he learned after the season that McNabb wouldn’t wear a wristband.

So wherever McNabb plays in 2011, it’ll be interesting to see whether he’ll wear a wristband.

Why would Snyder be furious at Shanahan for McNabb not wearing a wristband? Wouldn't he be furious with McNabb?

I was thinking the same thing

There's another interesting part of this story. D Snyder's reaction upon hearing that McNabb refused to wear a wrist ban.

Shanahan said he tried to get McNabb to wear a wristband and he declined. That news set Snyder off.

“Are you (deleted) kidding me,” Snyder reportedly said. “Why did I hire you as head coach? I am paying you $7 million to coach the team. If he is on the team next year you are getting him to wear the wrist band.”

Look, it's great that folks are trying to help clear up some questions... but PLEASE... include a link, an attribution, a source... SOMETHING to indicate that you didn't just pull it from your butt... ](*,)

Not that I think anyone is making stuff up, but, I mean, geeze... that's just good posting practice...

From Yahoo

Of course, this raises the spectre of the same old tantruming Snyder. If true, it's just another demonstration of infantile, entitled behavior by a spoiled brat. Not very comforting to those of us hoping for long term, positive, and professional change in the operation of the 'skins front office.

Hey, Danny... Mike Shanahan is not a "minion". He is a HOF quality head coach who has every right to expect to be treated with some respect, and with some deferrence to his knowledge of team management and leadership. He has a history of creating championship teams.

How about you? Yeah... that's what I thought...

You know he was going to be mad...

If you were paying Shanny the millions that "the Danny" is paying him to run the team and then you find out that he could not get the QB to do something that he thought would help the team, you'd be mad too. You'd be even more upset finding out about it at a dinner after the season is over, had you had your hands in all the team's football operations over the last decade or so.

I'm glad he didn't know about it, it shows that he is not aware of the daily activities at Redskins Park in year one of Shanny's run. I really don't care one way or the other that he is mad.

I agree 1niksder and I really don't think it's all as reported, AS USUAL

Shanahan's running this franchise right now and Snyder's the owner

it's all good

btw - McNabb is doing whatever Mike decides this season, whether that's here or NOT

I will tell you that, before I went off on my clearly competent-as-demonstrated-by-his-track-record coach, I would ask, "do you need me to do something?" I'm not going to jump to the conclusion that he doesn't have a handle on the situation, which, if this quote is correct, is exactly what the Danny did. Sorry... a competent owner... and a competent leader... does not do that... I don't care HOW much he is paying.

But, I sure would like to know more about the source of this quote.

I would like to know more about the source as well. According to the Junkies only Snyder, Shanahan, Allen and Fletcher Smith were present at the dinner. I doubt the source(s) got the scoup from any of these men directly; therefore, the source(s) must have gotten the information, at the very least, second handedly and since this story didn't break until months after the event, I would bet third handedly or more. We all know what happens when some stories are passed through so many minds.

I do believe that some version of this story is true. How much remains to be seen. Let's see if it brings any response from the dinner players this week.

Is it possible Snyder threw his supposed tantrum specifically to deliver a message to McNabb's agent, F. Smith, that this kind of behavior was not acceptable. It's a bit of a stretch, but I could see him telling Shanahan to play along.

Either way, the most important thing in all of this is that McNabb was unwilling to wear plays on his wrist. I have felt like the skins may have mismanaged McNabb, so I have given McNabb some benefit of doubt. But hearing this story, I say, screw his image, as a veteran leader and QB, you either know the playbook 100% or you do whatever it takes to win games. Maybe his disappointing performance is as much (or more) his fault after all.

My bad.... I thought we were talking about "the Danny" whom has never been anywhere near being competent...

if this story is true, it reflects extremely poorly on both McNabb and Shanahan. it would've been utterly ridiculous for McNabb to refuse to wear the wristband, even if it WERE embarassing. if his coach thought he needed it, he should wear it, period.

but the thing is, there's no reason for it to even have felt embarassing; it was his first season in a complicated new system. who would've thought anything of it?? if it were his 2nd or 3rd year in the system and he was still going by the wristband, yeah ok maybe.

BUT!, even that would be no excuse, as top-notch QBs Drew Brees and Tom Brady both wear play-sheet wristbands to this day! and nobody questions whether they know the system. it's just more efficient for the coach to tell the QB "let's go with #22" than "let's go with Z-Scat Yellow Boogie Y-Stick Lookie Fullback Swing Blast Texas Hatrack 57 Queen Left Tapdancing Crocodile 78-B Subparagraph 14".

and for Shanahan, it is as simple as that he should have told McNabb "you either wear the wristband or you don't play."

I'm willing to give McNabb the benefit of the doubt on this one. For all I know Snyder had a PR guy plant this rumor. If it gets substantiated, fine, but until then I won't be citing this in any debates over the guy's time in DC.

I'm still not convinced McNabb is really "on the outs".

Like many, I question the veracity of this story, especially the quotes.

So far, all the doomsayers have been wrong; not only did we not take a QB in the first round, we had a chance to take the guy the "experts" said we were going to get, we traded down and picked up a linebacker. We didn't even draft a QB at all.

We've made no moves on Grossman, made no moves to replace Grossman. Odd behavior for a team that can't wait to release it's starting, pro-bowl QB.

If McNabb isn't on the outs with the team, why didn't he show up when Fletcher organized those two practices last month? How come he hasn't had receivers down to his place in Arizona like he has in the past? Instead, McNabb's been working out with Cardinals' players.

Home come we haven't heard a vote of confidence from the Redskins regarding McNabb? We've heard about how great Beck is but nothing at all from Shanahan about McNabb. And nothing at all from the team to address the rumors about the wristband.

I'm sure you're right. My money is on McNabb being the day 1 starter until I hear otherwise from the team or the coach in official press releases; not some overheard conversation or the inferences of an all to eager media.

If you believed them, then we should be arguing about how coach Fassel will be starting Bradford this season.

I hear you Bob but I just have a hard time believing that because of the benching thing. You bench a former pro-bowler QB and then you'll start him on day 1? That doesn't make sense to me bro.

What was the benefit of him playing? The season was lost. McNabb wasn't going anywhere with his shiny new contract but Grossman was going to be a free agent. Why not see what he can do?

It's not unusual for McNabb to miss three or four games with an injury, it'd be good to know if Grossman can carry the team for a few and see if he's worth re-signing.

The media turned it hostile. McNabb wasn't insulted until about the three hundredth time they asked him.

Hey, Fletcher Smith deserves a little credit besides the media.
