Skins "front-runners" for Vince Young

The South Florida South-Sentinel "hears" that the Redskins are the front-runners for Vince Young's services this offseason.

Redskins beat writer Rich Tandler has also heard talk of Vince Young in the nation's capital, so the smoke is building here. Due a $4.25 million bonus in addition to his $8.5 million salary, Young is likely to be released rather than traded. The Redskins are one of just two teams with no semblance of a viable starting QB. It's easy to see why V.Y. would be interested in signing on, as it's his quickest path to playing time.

He's a head case, but he's a winner.

He's 30-17 as a starter. He will be 28 years old.

He has a 58% completion rate, over 1,300 yards rushing in his career, and has 42 TDs to 42 INTs for about a 76% QB RATING.

Comparing to Grossman:

Rex has a career 54% completion rate, 40 TDs to 40 INTs, and a career passer rating of 71%

Rex has a 20-14 record as a starter. He will be 31 years old.

Very similar, hmmmm.

I don't get that article at all. We're supposed to believe the Redskins are willing to part with D. McNabb because he didn't really get the offense and didn't work hard enough, and we're going to replace him with Vince Young of all people? How is this remotely believable?

I don't think that stat comparison between Young and Grossman has any significance whatsoever btw. I'm sure you pull three dozen other QBs with similar numbers. Has the issue with Vince Young ever really been his stats?

Well, to be fair though, look at Young's past two years. 20 TD, 10 INT, 59% comp...

Ideal size and body for an NFL quarterback, sure he comes with some red flags but he's obviously talented and seems a prime candidate to have a break out season. Honestly, if Mike Shanahan can't fix him, he can't be fixed. He's much better than the alternative.

I wasn't simply pulling stats to say one was better than the other. I am just a stats guy and I was curious. I thought while I check, I would save some people the time.

Is Young a Shanny type player? No.

Shanny just went out and got all these high-motor hard working guys...I don't think he would jeopardize all that for a QB with poor work ethic and attitude that Young has shown in the past.

Highly doubt this will happen. An arrogant guy with issues that doesn't like to talk to his head coach. Sound like someone Shanahan suspended last year?

What in the world makes you think that? The man walked out on his team and threw a temper tantrum in front of everyone less than six months ago. Whatever his personal issues are that have kept him from playing, he's not shown any signs of solving them. Changing the scenery doesn't count as a solution.

This must be a really old article. I thought he was released a long time ago.

=D>

There's just no way our team is looking to add VY to its roster.

I saw VY at the Final Four in Houston this year. He sat near me. He was walking around with his UT shirt and holding his daughter (I believe). told him i loved him at texas. he said thanks. pretty quiet guy. didnt talk to anyone really that wasnt with him and held his daughter for the majority of the time. just a random sighting.

Guy's still a douche, will stay a douche. The best predictor of future behavior is still past behavior.

However, granting that on occasion a douche will get it, then it may be worth a look.
If they want to provide an incentive laden contract, with escapes and penalties for stupid behaviors, go for it. Otherwise... No.

We are talking about a former Titan, right?

Red flags?

Character issues?

Unfixable according to Fisher?

Talented with great "potential" for a break out season?

Are we talking about Haynesworth again? No? Too bad.

I thought people would learn from previuous mistakes.

Kyle Orton as a starter has a 32-29 record (was 29-19 before last year)

58.1% completion %, 71 TDs and 48 ints

I'll go with Kyle (or Beck, McNabb, Rex, or some guy we pick up at a Kwiki Mart) before I go withe the very athletic fruit basket!

I'd agree, EXCEPT... a contract can be structured in a manner to account for Haynesworth types of behaviors. There are Albert Haynesworths... and there are Mike Vicks...

At least, Vince Young is not a criminal... that we know of...

This could be structured in a manner to minimize the team's exposure... This would be Young's best opportunity for playing time. If he want's it, he accepts a tightly structured contract, with both incentive and penalties... if not... see ya!

I'm not advocating this. But, I won't blow up if it does.

i am 100% in favor of going with Vince Young this year

...as a component of the "Suck and Luck" strategy.

Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com pointed out in an e-mail to PFT that Redskins coach Mike Shanahan counts former Titans coach Jeff Fisher and former Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger among his closest friends. Neither Fisher nor Heimerdinger would be expected to endorse Young to Shanahan.

This, of course, changes everything. Don't expect to see VY in B&G...

It never passed the laugh test. If there's one thing everybody agrees about re: Shanahan is that he's an unrelenting taskmaster when it comes to his QBs. If there's anybody in the league less suited to succeed under that level of constant criticism, it's Young.

Which is a shame because he's far and away the best QB that's going to be available this offseason with the possible exception of Kolb (who will be more expensive). But there's no way it ever could have worked, and Young and Shanahan are both smart enough to know not to bother trying.

Young would be crying at his locker after every practice.

I hope this isn't true. He's talented, but winning starts with character. I wish nothing personally ill towards the guy. He needs psychiatric help and I hope he's getting it. But we don't need that.

We're in a desperate situation. I think we should take a shot with Young. He's capable of having the kind of year Vick had last year if we can pick up three FA's who can actually play on the OL. One thing for sure-- Rex will take us nowhere.

I disagree. We are REBUILDING.

Most "desperate fixes" tend to bring us further down.

Mmmmm ... :hmm:

How will he pay back the damage made to the Team with his tantrums and unprofessional attitude??? Not making more money? Taking a roster spot away? Taking an opportunity away from a younger prospect or a more experienced QB?

Just say NO to VY.
