How does John Beck fit into the Redskins’ QB search?

How does John Beck fit into the Redskins’ QB search?
As draft analysts wonder whether the Redskins will select a quarterback in the first 41 picks and let him develop on the sidelines for a few years, it’s easy to envision John Beck in the back of the room with his hand raised.
“Um, excuse me, I’m a top-41 quarterback who has spent the last three-plus seasons learning from the sideline. And I’m under contract and ready to go.”
Beck seems to have been forgotten as a possible solution for the Redskins’ quarterback dilemma.

That is an excellent question especially since he IS the only Redskin QB under contract.
If you ask John Beck, he thinks that he will be the guy this year and there won't be a need to draft a QB.
Did anybody hear his interview on the LaVar and Dukes show on March 24th?
http://www.guysnation.com/beck-might-be ... qb-in-2011
Here is the SI.com 2007 draft analysis on him.
POSITIVES: Intelligent passer who is accurate in the short and intermediate field. Stands strong in the pocket, poised under the rush and consistently finds the open wideout. Sells the ball fakes, looks off the safety and goes through receiver progressions.
NEGATIVES: Lacks the top deep arm. Over-aged prospect.
ANALYSIS: A signal caller with excellent intangibles and field vision, Beck could effectively back up in a West Coast offense.
PROJECTION: Early Fifth Round
They were wrong on the round, but so far they are right about his pro career. Could three years on the bench taught him something.
Why didn't Shanny give him an audition game last year? What was he like in practice? Has anybody heard anything about him in practice. They say Grossman lit it up in practice. Of course third teamers play with the scout team so they don't get to run the Kyle O.
I am just going to take a reach here and say Beck stays forgotten, at least until the pre-season (I am being optimistic) AND is not a part of the Shanny draft plan.

Shanny was the one that traded for Beck, AND Grossman is taking part in the workouts without a contract for some reason.

What is it that Shanny likes about Beck? Clearly the Dolphins also saw something more than in Beck than Si.com, so Shanny was not alone in liking Beck out of college. When Shanny traded for Beck, he stated that he liked him in college. Beck is not the optimum height at 6-2. The Si.com report says his arm isn't strong. Doesn't Shanny like big armed QBs? Sure Shanny got him dirt cheap from Baltimore, so one can fault taking a chance on him. Even Beck said in his interview with LaVar and Dukes that Shanny didn't tell him much after the season.
I love what Beck said in that interview, but I have nothing to go on except Shanny's silence and the silence to me is either great gamesmenship on Shanny's part or it is a wait until pre-season thing for Beck.
I say that the silence says that we go for a QB. Oh how I would love to be wrong on this one. Beck has studied his playbook hard this off-season. He has been working out with a QB guru to improve all his weaknesses. He has been pumping iron to develop that weak arm. He has been stretching to grow another inch so he could have the desired NFL QB height. The Kyle O is the perfect fit for him. Shanny knows all along that Beck is the guy. We don't even draft a QB. We go defense, defense, defense. We get a couple of excellent FA O lineman with strong work ethics. We win the Sup --- Dammit, who woke me up?

This is what Shanny said....
"I just liked (John) back in college, the system that he ran. I thought it was very similar to the system we run. I liked the way he threw the football and the way he handled himself. Now I get a chance to see him firsthand."
He liked the way he threw the ball, a similar system and how he handled himself. OK that was back in college.
We don't know much, but we know a few things... like
1. Shanny traded for him right before the pre-season started, with Colt Brennan and Ricard Bartel (after both were in all mini-camps, OTAs) still on the roster along with McNabb and Grossman.
2. Grossman got a 1 year deal for around the league minimum and Beck got a two-year, $2.25 million extension.
3. Beck started his Redskins career as the 5th QB and less than a year later he is the only one under contract.
What it means? Who knows he might be a #2

Much like the Si.com scouting report said.
POSITIVES: Intelligent passer who is accurate in the short and intermediate field. Stands strong in the pocket, poised under the rush and consistently finds the open wideout. Sells the ball fakes, looks off the safety and goes through receiver progressions.
ANALYSIS: A signal caller with excellent intangibles and field vision, Beck could effectively back up in a West Coast offense. Except, I am sure that Shanny thinks he might be able to coach him up to a be a starter. With what Beck's strong desire to succeed maybe it could happen.

]I think that you are right he starts out as #2 here.
I doubt if Shanny goes after one of the veteran FAs because they would be way behind in learning Kyle's complex offense. That makes Grossman who is yet to be signed as #1 to start off and that makes QB draftee as #3, so Beck does not fit into the QB search or does he? If Beck is seen to be a solid #2 with potential then that rookie draftee could be a late round pick or a undrafted rookie like a Tyrod Taylor (not suggesting - but saying a project with potential). Like you said - we don't know much. The thing that we do know that sticks out most is that Beck was given a two year deal.
IF Shanny had a reputation as a "can't miss guy" with personnel, this would be all we need to know.

Beck held court for 15 minutes. He was very insightful. Dude sounds extremely determined & confident. He badly wants the starting job

The Skins and Rex's agent probably held talks before the lockout went into effect about Rex returning next year. I'd be very surprised if he isn't re-signed.

Beck is spending the offseason training with Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers in SD. ''Pretty good company,'' as he called it. #Redskins

Beck says he will not accept being a backup QB, says he will just outwork people to get it done.

Well McNabb IS also under contract still and still the Redskins best QB.
Rex will almost definitely be resigned being that he was at the voluntary players workout.
So realistically Beck is the odd man out if the redskins draft a QB. Although most people believe that McNabb will be traded or cut. However, I think both of these might take some time to occur even if a CBA is in place.

Right you are. I should have been saying that Beck is the only Redskin QB that was signed to a long term deal.
McNabb, unless the lockout dictates otherwise, is gone. I do believe that there are teams that can see that McNAbb problems here were mostly a bad fit and not because he can't play. Againt Philly and GB, McNabb made some key plays to win those games even though he had a bad game statiscally in at least the Philly game. Right you are again, that McNabb is the best of the three and that is why someone else will want him.
Beck will be the second team QB next year unless his Brees tutelege sparks him past Grossman. Who knows. The rook will sit as he learns the O.

I think that depending on when this CBA thing get's worked out 100% dictates what we do with McNabb. I think also that the value of McNabb is going to depend on how the draft goes and if there is still a large need from some teams for a QB. The biggest FA QB on the market right now is Mark Bulger who wouldn't be a bad guy to bring into DC to talk too should be draft a late round/developmental QB.

I certainly think that Shanny keeps all options available when looking at FA QBs out there, but here is a question that I have.
Is this Kyle Offense so complex that it would take any veteran a year to grasp it? Shanny alludes to it when he says two to three years. If this is so, and with a long range plan in mind, it wouldn't make sense to bring in a Marc Bulger unless it was an emergency. Grossman would still be the starter based on knowledge of the playbook. You have an aging veteran as a back up for what? That takes reps away from a QB that might be here in the long run. The third team spot is for the rookie they draft for the future or if Shanny holds out for next year, a project QB. We are ina situation where we need guys to be ready as the Shanny plan unfolds. Perhpas we should have signed Bulger last year. Perhaps, we contacted him, but it went no further than that.

I see your point but Bulger is a savy vet. Of course he's not the long term solution but I think that Bulger is good enough to run the office. His #1 issue is staying healthy. And that's why you get him if you draft a guy like Ponder in the 2nd. Ponder, IMO needs about 1/2 season to be ready to play.

Is this Kyle Offense so complex that it would take any veteran a year to grasp it (what I mean by grasp it is - that it doesn't take half the season to be able to implement more than 70%)? So in answer to my question, you are saying no. Is this correct? (Let's say - Bulger had the benefit of OTA's and pre-season because obviously, McNabb ,being a veteran didn't learn it, so I can't ask if "any" veteran).
I know that none of us know for sure, but based on what you have read or heard and your reasoning.

Beck will be 30 when (if?) the season starts. Not exactly our QB of the future.

No wonder why the dude is working with Drew Brees and here working with the rest of the guys. His window of op to be a starter will be closing.

I do not think that Mike or Kyle see Beck as a starting QB
I really doubt that even Beck thinks he's a starting caliber QB - he's a #3 or a #2 at best
I hope whichever QB they draft can get ready to play some this season but I really don't think that Mike or Kyle is thinking that the guy they bring in will be ready to be THE starting QB - that would be nice and we might need to do it, but not very realistic - most all of the QB gurus and whatever are looking at these guys as needing time to get ready
I hope that whomever we get can become a good QB for this franchise but I also hope that they don't hurt that chance by rushing him into action - some playing time would be great but making a QB the starter before he's really ready is not a good plan
Beck will be fighting to be the #3 QB here IMO - unless he's made a lot of progress since he's been here that we're not aware of

John Beck said today that he believes he will be the Redskins’ starting QB for the 2011-12 season during an interview on the Lavar Arrington Show with Chad Dukes on 106.7 The Fan.
I heard the interview live. Unless it is some imposter calling in a prank call, Beck believes that he is a starting caliber QB and as Canes posted earlier, Beck is working out with Drew Brees. Beck also, showed up to the players' volunteer workouts. I would say that the guy is serious.

What player is going to be negative on himself? Not a successful one, I can tell you that. Perfect example, Vince Young. He had a hard time at the NFL level b/c he realized he wasn't head and shoulders above the rest...that everyone here is good and he has to work to be the best...lack of confidence and the rest is history.
