Welcome to the site and that's great news. Just saw on twitter. Don't really care about the money right now until we find out what the salary cap will be. Good combo just hope that their strengths and weakness' work well with each other. But our DCord knows both guys well.

I was shocked when I heard the news. I thought for sure someone would outbid us for him. The safety market is week this year. Though I am a big Bob Sanders fan, I have to admit that O. J. having played in Haslett's system is the better fit.
This is the type of free agent signing that I hope will be the norm for us. A proven vet who can make big plays and he is not coming in here making more money that everybody else.

They extended the CBA deadline 24 hrs. I'm pretty sure most the cap hit will go on the 2010 numbers and it was 5 years $26 million.

I'd rather have focused on signing Asomougha.

Well, the coaches made the better decision. FS was the weaker position out of the two. Hall and Rogers played good last year. Barnes stepped up a bit last year. CB is NOT the position to blow money on this year. FS, NT and OLB are where we need help.
FS - Atogwe
NT - They're trying to get Jenkins
OLB - Seems like they're going to target someone via the draft.
Good pickup.

Agree, and if you know what the Steelers look like on defense, which is what we are trying to emulate, you would know that they have two CB's who are not shut down corners. Zone blitz defenses like that don't neccessarily place high emphisis on the CB position, meaning, they can afford good not great zone cover corners which are much less expensive as long as you have great safeties. Great pick-up. Need a NT in the draft, and looks like the bulls eye is on the LB from UCLA or one of the DT's in the first round. This defense could be stacked in a couple seasons

OJ Atogwe is one of the most underrated players in football. He is an absolute turnover MACHINE. Forces fumbles in bunches, is a ball hawk, he's ideal as a FS in our defensive backfield. Hopefully we kick the tires on Nick Barnett and Jamal Williams too.

Not sure on this one...Atogwe is okay at best. But I guess anything is better than Mr."Just Take the Ball Out of My Hands" Kareem Moore.

Grade: 76 | Good Starter
Comment: Atogwe is a ball-hawking safety with a good feel for the game and good athleticism. He has the foot quickness to get good depth with his back pedal and the fluid hips to turn and run with receivers or to open and break on the ball in front of him or to the sidelines with a good burst. He has good route recognition and does a good job of reading the quarterback's eyes to get a jump on the ball. He is not a blow-up tackler but is not timid about inserting himself in run support and generally brings down the ball carrier well. He has still takes too many chances and can give up the big one to speed receivers and lacks the kind of top-end speed that can help compensate for mistakes.

A good move, but really, a year late (Atogwe was a no-comp RFA last spring and unrestricted in June). A good FS and a 4-3 base set with the 2010 Skins roster would have been one of the best defenses in football.
This year? Atogwe will make the secondary much better, but we're talking about one hole of many. A good start and may they continue the progress.

29 for a safety is not very old.

From espn.go.com (March 3rd):
Atogwe played the 2009 season under terms of the one-year, $6.34 million franchise offer. He became only a restricted free agent following the 2009 season, however, as the labor agreement upped requirements for unrestricted free agency in an uncapped year.
This was an unfortunate step backward for Atogwe.
The Rams took advantage of the RFA designation by making the lowest possible offer. Rules required them to up that $1.226 million offer to $7 million or let Atogwe become a free agent last June. The Rams opted to let Atogwe become a free agent. They liked him, but not at the $7 million price. The timing made it tougher for Atogwe to find a suitable deal. He re-signed with the Rams.

I am going take a guess at why we didn't sign him last year. Shanny was sold on Moore and why not? Moore was supposed to be a up and coming dinamond in the rough. Haslett may have said to Shanny let's take a look at OJ, but that late in the FA season with the Redskins changing the "hit the FA in the face with the big pot of money strategy," they may have said, hmmm, but just couldn't because of the image change. Just a guess.

This one will fit nicely with yours -
From espn.go.com March 3rd:
Atogwe has built a reputation for forcing turnovers, but his production in that area has fallen off even while the Rams have improved on defense. He had three interceptions in 2010 and two the previous season after collecting 13 in 2007 and 2008. Jim Haslett, the Rams' defensive coordinator during Atogwe's ball-hawking years, is coordinating the Redskins' defense. Perhaps Atogwe will fit better there.

The Rams will miss Atogwe, but their fans should be happy for him, too. Atogwe handled himself more professionally than I can recall another player handling himself under the circumstances. He practiced with the team as a franchise player even though he hadn't signed the $6.34 million tender.
He was a team player all the way.

He isn't young but I wouldn't call him old. He'll be fine for at least 3 years barring injury. If we can go 3 years without throwing away draft picks, we'll have a replacement for him.

It's not a terrible move, but it's not great either. While Otogwe is a solid player, he is also going to be 30 years old for next season and his production has declined each of the last two seasons.

His production has declined, but could this be because they weren't using him they way Haslett did?

Good isht.. I'm glad we filled a hole glad he won't even ask for 21 and even glad LL reached out to Moore. That's a good big brother type move and trying to keep a friends head up. I think he wants to keep Moores confidence up and be a possible back up but he has to know Oj is an upgrade in the backfield w him
