The JOYS of Sleeping....

I normally get 5 hrs of sleep each night...and I "think" I'm good to go all day. Fact is, 8+ hours would do OUR body good: REM, better health, stronger immunity.
So I decided to go to bed around 9pm to get my 8hrs. Sadly, now I wake up at 3am and can't get back to sleep. Still stuck at 5 or 6hrs per day.
Advice?
Suggestions?
....any doctors out there?

It might take more than one night to adjust.

A few questions:
How old are you?
Got any kids?
Exercise much?
How's the weight?
Drink coffee?

You may just be someone who doesn't need much sleep... but, if you want to try to reset your circadian clock, you might want to try staying awake for a full 40 hours straight.
You are probably sure to sleep at least 8 hours the first night. If you return to only 5 hours the next night, you probably just don't need much sleep. Hey, it may not be fair, but biology rarely is.

We are eerily similar. I'm 51 and run about 40 miles a week. I weigh 165 and can go sleep right after coffee also.
We had our first kid when I was 40. Good luck sleeping then.
Seriously, sounds like you drink enough coffee that it doesn't do the trick anymore after the first cup. See what happens after a week of only having one small strong cup in the morning and no more until the next morning. I've done that lately while getting ready for my first (and probably only) marathon and have found that 1/2 hour of reading at 10:00 is putting my ass down until 5:30 the next morning giving me a solid 7 hours.

Retirement is not much fun. I found that the first two weeks of retirement ("voluntary" early retirement) felt like a vacation. Then it was boring and bad. Lost track of the days of the week, wanted to start designing my next project...
Found a job at 2/3 my old salary, longer commute, but freedom to make (computer) systems the way the customer wants rather than they way management wants. No bureaucracy, no organizational "silos", no requirement that I appeal up three levels of management for permission to ask an "architect" if a system will do what the customer will depend on. It's fun going to work.
(Yes, all off-topic...)
