I didnt watch a lot of Atogwe this year but maybe Haslett who coached him for a few years likes his game. I honestly was very dissapointed with Moore's play at Free Safety last year, his tackling was awful and our deep coverage was an obvious problem. I guess it wouldnt be a bad look.

I have no problems at all with the Redskins taking a look at this guy. I think he'll end up signing with somebody else for more money than we want to offer, but it's well worth registering our interest at least. Much better proposition than Bob Sanders, in my opinion.

Good. I hope we get him. A good FS would help this D a lot.

I agree that Atogwe is worth a look, but it will come down to how much other teams are willing to pay him. I still say Bob Sanders is the better option if he is willing to sign a contract with the bulk of the contract coming in per game bonuses. Bob Sanders has the will to win and that spreads to other players. I would be willing to bet that even when he was on the sidelines because of injury, Bob had an effect on how his teammates played. The Colts had to drop him because they were playing him too much for a guy who was often injured. If he can be signed for such a per game bonus contract then he is worth the risk while you develop one of your own. Moore doesn't have the mental to play the saftey position to be effective. Back to Atogwe, he is an upgrade over Moore, but fat chance of signing him, because he wants M-O-N-E-Y. This is why the Pats, Colts and Steelers develop their own secondary or take rejects like our Ryan Clark make them into winners. This is why the Pats get rid of the Asante Samuels. We don't need M-O-N-E-Y players we need players that have the will to win. They don't have to be the most talented. I bet with a Bob Sanders on the team, he could motivate Moore into the fierce hitter he was in college. Sign Bob Sanders!

Signing someone right now is a bit premature given the fact that the CBA hasn't been extended or a new one created. We don't know how much cap space we will have and it's irresponsible to move forward until we know what the restrictions will be on caps space, contract timelines, etc.

The guy might be listed as a FS but he covers like a SS he would be a minor upgrade over Moore because Otogwe can at least tackle. Anyways he left without a contract offer.

Why would we go after another SS who is always hurt and was cut by one of the top organizations in football?

I think I answered why I would in the above statement that you quoted. Fact is someone WILL sign Bob Sanders for the reasons above because the upside is that good. The ISSUE as with all signing is in the contract. Will a team just sign Bob outright and pray that he doesn't get hurt or will they put incentives in his contract that say he gets incentives if he stays healthy? Of course, Bob will choose the best deal that is out there. The question is will Bob come cheap or will there be a bidding war. I know that we will not get into a bidding war for Bob. The same ISSUE applies with Atogwe. He was let go of his organization, an up and coming organization that was one game removed from the play-offs, but I bet you that the Rams still want him. There will be a bidding war for his services. Though Atogwe is not an elite safey, he is one of the best available. Atogwe is the best option out there. Haslett has a relationship with him, but how much are we willing to spend on a guy who is ranked as a good safety? Bob was so good for that top organizaion that they kept him off injured reserve all season. Once again, I point out that football is 90% mental and that Bob brings with him an attitude that spills over to his teammates. Even while injured, he makes his team better because he inspires teammates. Tim, If you can't sign Atogwe, what are your options?

By the way, we have our own captain crash SS, that might be headed to the injury prone list, LaRon Landry. I love the way he plays, but how can guys survive 16 games seasons like that? I would love to several LaRon Landrys on my team even if they can't stay healthy, because their attitude spills over. Then again if we has several LaRon Landrys the D wouldn't be on the field for as many plays because they would be knocking so many heads like we were doing at the beginning of last season when several opponents got knocked out of the game. Sign Bob Sanders!

I found this article which explains why Bob Sanders gets hurt so often. There is a difference between an injury prone NFL player and an NFL player who get hurts often because he is knocking the snot out of folks.

The article points out that the Colts weak front seven against the run set up Bob to be the enforcer against the run. The article also points out that Bob was not injury prone in college so there is nothing wrong with his body.

Bob needs a change of scenery and achange of position to FS.

He's only played in 48 games in his 7 years in the league. I don't care what the excuse is, we shouldn't sign him.

Dude you just don't get what I'm saying why would we go after another SS that wants 4 mil a year with that history of injuries? An Incentive contract based on how many games he plays? That could work but he's not going to fit the scheme man. He will look like Landry playing FS except worse because he's slower. I admit because I live 20 min. from U of I and Sanders was a bad mothafracker in college and is when healthy but this will be his 9th year. We need to either trade down and fill some holes or if for some god given reason Patrick Peterson falls in our lap who is a CB but runs a 4.35 and is 6'1" 215 and a ball hawk and many GMs are saying that he could easily play FS but he'll be gone by 10 so we should trade down and take a FS in the 2nd then we could get a fat man for the bench possibly a QB and a FS that can cover and tackle anywhere better than Moore is cool with me. Might be able to find a couple diamonds in the rough too like last year. I hope this makes sense too cuz I'm really drunk right now -drinking in 6 hours :puke:

Tim, I get what you are saying. We just don't agree. Now, as far a Bob playing FS along side LaRon, Matt Bowen who happens to have played safety in the NFL thinks that he can, SO it is not a reach that I think that he can. Don't forget that Bob is a Cover 2 Safety. Those safeties are interchangeble between SS and FS.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Fiv ... nders.html

We both agree that Moore was horrible. We both agree that Patrick would be great, but highly unlikely that we would be able to get him especially after trading down.

I am not saying break the bank to sign Sanders. If he can come relatively cheap, sign him. If he doesn't work out, your fall back is Moore. I say that Sanders will make him better. Fact is, unless we are willing to over pay Atogwe, we want be able to get him. It seems clear that Shanny has decided not to over pay guys unless they are in a skill position. Just like our QB situation, we might be forced to start Moore again next year, but it ain't all bad - a front 7 upgrade can mask weaknesses in the back four. Shanny is following the model of the Pats, Colts and Steelers. Stop overpaying guys unless they are elite players. Atogwe is not elite. No one is saying Bob is elite anymore. I am saying Bob is an upgrade over Moore if he can come relatiely cheap and a change of position can reduce his chance of injuries. The likelyhood of this happening is nil because someone will overpay for Bob. Unless we do find a diamond in the rough, look for Moore to start again next year, but do look for a major upgrade in the front seven because that is the priority unless a potential elite guy like Patrick is available.

Sanders plays ferociously because the other defensive players suck? Is that what I just heard someone say?

Tell you what, I like Sanders but its obviously because of his many injuries that I'm hesitant. How can we determine that he'll be healthy if we had him?

It's always a gamble my people, lets see if Shanallen wants to take the risk.

Sanders replacement Melvin Bullit was placed on IR with a shoulder injury after week 3 this past season. Bullit is also known to whack folks from the Colts SS positon as well.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5650578

Either there is an injury prone virus going on with Colts strong safeties or there really is something to the article that I posted earlier that Colts D asks too much of their Strong Safeties.
