i saw that too. green bay picks 25th in the first round, which might as well be in the second round. seems too low to get a quality dlineman, nevermind sean taylor. unless they take a few picks from the packers, and then move back up into a 10-15 spot with a team looking to trade down, essentially picking up a pick or two.

If we pick up extra picks our 1st rounder doesn't have to be a dlineman although Starks might be around. We could pick up Troupe or Watson at TE which is a need area too.

I heard about that rumor. This is how it goes:

Pack send us: Marques Anderson, 2004 AND 2005 first round pick, and 2004 2nd round pick.

We send the Pack: 2004 1st round pick and (I think 2004 5th round pick).

It's tempting, but can we really afford a year with no draft picks excepting a 5th rounder? I realize that we do receive 2 first round picks in compensation, yet suppose that the Packers manage two years of solid football (as they have been able to do the last 8 years)--we'll end up with low first round picks, which to me makes the deal seem a lot less tempting.

Anyone mind telling me how their numbers are bad?

Stats don't mean that much. The number that means the most for safetys is missed tackles, which isn't calculated.

True - and I would bet that since safeties are often the last line of defense and more often than not are supporting one side of the field as opposed to the other, there would be a lot of bad angles and bad tackles.

Safeties aren't meant to cover guys like Moss or Owens... and frankly any DC who calls for them to is a moron and should be drawn and quartered. And Edwards fit that bill last year.

In our defense, the LBs sat still, the safeties crept up and then had to react to the play. If it was play action, because they were dual duty more than most teams, the safeties were often caught with their pants down. How many times did I go back and watch the safeties having to run up to make a play on the run because the DL was NON EXISTANT? Heck - they finally started shifting players to Bruce's side towards the latter part of the year cause he wouldn't stop the run if the back ran smack into him. They had DTs getting pushed backwards into the LBs.

Sorry, I just don't feel like those two got a decent shot, and yet between the two of them they caused 8 turnovers and had as many tackles as some LBs on other teams.

Like I said in the Trotter thread - maybe it wasn't Iffy going down the wrong gap as was illustrated by Collinsworthless... maybe it was Trotter and that is why he got released - his freelancing and blown plays.

I can think of two times Bowen got tagged for bad angles/missed tackles. One was way obvious... one he was covering and couldn't get turned fast enough and got juked - like most NFL safeties... can you tell me that he honestly got burnt more times than Champ? Seriously - Champ, Bowen, Iffy and Smoot did well considering the scheme, but it was the scheme that cause the problems in my opinion. Not the lack of talent.

I just showed the numbers to compare to a guy that is rumored to be a possible trade and show that he isn't much of an upgrade.

Let's see how these two do in a structured, detail oriented, pass rushing system like Williams' before we start replacing people who actually look fairly talented when you go back and see the circumstances. I slow it down, watch the development of the formation, and you can see that the safeties were expected to be LBs and DBs at all times, which is unreasonable. They should have assignments, either a man to cover OR stop the run OR blitz OR a zone. Not two or three at the same time.

I think you will see a huge improvement - and Williams' defense has been proven to cause interceptions due to the pressure - and these two can put themselves there to intercept - they proved it.

I just don't know if Iffy and Ohalete have what it takes. You can't deny that Taylor is a much better athlete than the two guys we got now. He'd pretty much be a fourth linebacker and a third corner out on the field at the same time.

Where do teams usually use a safety in college? Covering a 3rd or 4th wideout, or a TE. How many of those guys are NFL bound? I mean really. Be realistic even though you are wanting this guy.

You say stats don't mean anything, then Taylor's don't either... and he didn't do a job of proving he wants anyone to take him when he showed up badly at pro day and then sounded rather arrogant about it on a recent chat at ESPN.

Sorry - just not sold that we need another linebacker with 9 on the team and another being offered. We might need a safety, but at the #5 spot? With all the contract implications? Especially with the need for a speed rusher or another big tackle?

If they address the DL problems I still see, then ok... go for Taylor. If not, trade down, get another needed pick or two and take a DL in the early mid first round. There are some friggin animals that we could really use - Udeze/Smith/Wilfork/Starks...

I think we ought to trade our #5 with new england for their number 21 and 32nd over pick. Its possible because they already have a gang of picks in the draft and coach Belicheck should do anything to get his hands on Roy Williams. With the two picks we could get darnell Dockett (DT) (most stops for negative gain this year) and a ben troupe (te), Sean Jones (ss), or Randy starks (dt)

They have to be amenable to surrendering two first rounders... and I don't know if they will be - even with their cap issues
