Akers?

It has been revealed that the "personal matter" K David Akers was dealing with during the Eagles' 21-16 Wild Card round loss to the Packers was a possible cancer diagnosis for his 6-year-old daughter Halley.
Akers missed two field goals that day, drawing the ire of Andy Reid. He found out the next day that Halley indeed had cancer. Thankfully, she is believed to be cancer free after surgery.

Akers was "deeply hurt" by Reid's comments, however, and believes his career in Philly has come to an end. A five-time Pro Bowler, the free agent will be sought after this offseason.

This is a sad story, but I would love to have a sure footed kicker on our squad. We should have never let him go in the first place.

Didn't akers start out in B&G? I didn't read what Reid said but what an insensitive prick to say anything that isn't 100% supportive of akers and his family. Surprised akers played. I'm down to trade Dmac straight across! Rofl

If he is released, sign him quickly.

I would be cool with that. He and Reed Doughty could have a support group for parents going through that. I don't say that to be funny either. Reed's son went through some serious health problems a couple of seasons ago too, didn't he? They could get along well.

Reid has always put the Eagles above his own family. Why would anyone expect him to expect one of his players to do differently?

Not many of us around but I'm a Gano supporter! He's young, has a strong leg and is going to be a quality kicker one day. You get rid of him and I believe he could be David Akers in 10 years -- with a bunch of you moaning -- why did we get rid of him? blah, blah, blah!!!!

Does anyone remember Akers when we had him? He wasn't lighting the world on fire. He doesn't even have the leg of Gano, who is just 22 by the way. Kickers take awhile to mature, as they learn to deal with the pressure.

Two things make me think Gano is the real thing:

1) Our coaches didn't cut him after a missed FG or two, to make a scapegoat of him (like I think they did to Hunter Smith); and

2) Hunter Smith's comment when he was here that Gano is going to be a good kicker, he has all the traits of a good kicker, give him time. Smith had no reason to say that and Smith has been around quality kickers when in Indy -- Vanderjagt and Vinatieri.

I'd say, keep Gano, pass on Akers and worry about our punter!

Now, that's a gutsy post, Fred! Let's not forget about that Swishi guy whose going to the Bowl. Ok, now that I checked that David Akers is 36 years old, I am going to have to change my mind and side with you Fred. Can we at least bring in some kickers to give Gano some competition?

I'll be the first to admit when we cut Akers I didn't say we'd lost a gem. but please, Gano isn't nearly as good as Akers was when we cut him. I never said Akers sucks. Gano blows. Deal with it.
