I think OJ Simpson was clearly the greatest Bill of all time.

Here is my argument:

OJ was 1st team all-pro for 5 years in a row. During this 5-year stretch he ran for 7699 yards (1,540 per season in a 14-game season) in 1513 carries (over 300 per season) for a 5.1 yards-per-carry average, all with a crappy team and with everyone knowing who was getting the ball.

He is the only player to rush for 200 yards in a game 6 times.

He is the only player to run for 2,000 yards in a 14-game season.

In that season he entered the last 2 games needing 416 yards to get 2,000 and the whole world knew he'd be getting the ball. He carried 56 times for 419 yards averaging 7.5 yards per carry.

Anyone who ever saw him play knows how incredibly elusive he was. What is not as well known is his pure speed and strength.

In the "Superstars" competition he miltary pressed 275 pounds having never lifted weights in his life. He came in 2nd to Bill Toomey (decathlon champ) in this event. Toomey cleaned and jerked more. OJ forced it up with brute strength.

As for speed, OJ was probably the fastest RB in NFL history and perhaps the fastest NFL player of all time. Evidence: OJ was a member of the USC sprint relay team that won the 1967 NCAA title with a still-standing world record for 440 yards (38.6). He had world-class speed, something few (if any other) NFL RBs in history can boast.

Of course, he was a horrible person but he may have been the best running running back of all time.

I'd say single greatest player either Jim Brown or Sammy Baugh.

- Baugh: practically invented the forward pass, perfected the bullet pass, made the pass a part of the offense rather than a desperation play. Also held single-season records for pass interceptions and punting.

- Jim Brown: there was Jim Brown, and all the rest. Led the league in rushing almost every year. Retired when he had no more records to break. Played at 230 pounds, the size of a typical LB or OG, and was fast as lightning. Didn;t care about receiving, but he could take a short pass and carry three or four defenders on his back.

I saw OJ, and listened to him call NFL games. OJ joked about all the times he got his "century", meaning 100 yards rushing, and relaxed. Larry Brown was a better RB than OJ, because Brown had quicker acceleration, he blocked, and he could take a short pass 60 or 80 yards (see Jets game, 1972). In fact, when Jim Brown retired, he said that Larry Brown was the only RB who could do some things that even Jim B couldn't do.

(On speed, I think Darrel Green was faster, and only Carl Lewis was a
faster sprinter. All during Green's senior year, he ran with Lewis, sometimes winning, sometimes coming a close second.)

Looking through the players by team, I think Charley Taylor was better than Jerry Rice. Think of a 6-3 217 pound RB who was ROY, had great hands, brilliant cutback runner, also a good safety (they play two-way in college then), but gets shifted to WR. Rice never got dirty, and played in a soft conference. Taylor took his pounding running the ball, was almost as good as Bobby Mitchell after he catch (and that's saying a lot), and was the model that the Skins hoped to duplicate when they drafted Art Monk. Oh, and Taylor was a devastating blocker.

By the way: I challenged your stuff on the Bills but wanted to say what a great job you did overall. Nice work.
