Shanahan modifying expectations for Grossman?

Shanahan said, ‘At the end of the game, with Donovan, with Rex knowing the offense, I felt with the time and no timeouts, [Grossman] gave us the best chance to win in that scenario.’ And then two weeks ago, when Grossman was named starter for the final three games of the season, Shanahan again said “I think Rex gives us a great chance to win” because of how the quarterback had demonstrated his knowledge in practices and meetings).

“First of all, you’ve got to take a look at Houston,” Shanahan said Monday afternoon. “He only played, I think 12 plays and came into the season very late. Didn’t pick up the offense until training camp. And so, to say that a person has two full years in the system is a little unfair I think. I think realistically, he’s had two games and we’ve got a chance to evaluate him against another team that’s fighting for a playoff spot. This is the third game. Even though he knows the terminology, this is the third chance to see him in live action.”

At first, it was Rex's knowledge of the Offense that put him in for the Two Minute drill.
Now, he doesn't really know that much and needs patience.

Really? WTH can any coach do but throw what he can against the wall and see what sticks.

Try it all, DM; attempting to save Fat Al; trying 2-3 washed up RB's in camp; taking recently injured players to fill holes in both def and offense, taking players from the World, Arena or Fight (whatever the hell that league was) leagues to fill holes.

Just think of what both GM-Allen and Coach Shanny are left with and what the history is here:

-10 years of ignoring the draft (old talent)
-10 years of ignoring the O-line (old and not too talent)
-10 years of QB carousel
-10 years of ignoring the D-line (old and not too talented)
-10 years of overpaying for old players (getting rapped essentially)
-2010 a year of hardly any good FA talent to bring in.


Guys, its going to take more than one season to get the ship righted.

The core of this team is spoiled and we need an infusion of good, young talent at reasonable prices to get it heading in the right direction.

I'm a Shanny supporter....so YES all his qoutes are true. Rex didn't have Live Action so it's not fair to say he "knows" the system after 2 years of NO Live Action.....

I'm a Shanny supporter....so YES all his qoutes are true. Rex didn't have Live Action so it's not fair to say he "knows" the system after 2 years of NO Live Action.....

but he explicitly SAID that.

This FO is going to get the job done - I'm pretty sure that the idiot owner will give them another year - hopefully we'll have football in 2011

All those that want to point out all the mistakes and lies and innuendo, can have a field day with this guy - I could care less what he says or does or how he treats the other players or coaches

FACT is Mike Shanahan is the HC and he is improving the franchise - we were a lot worse at the end of last season

if there are some here that want to find a nice guy to be the HC and get this franchise back to the same level that these guys have done you are dreaming - this place was a disaster because of years of NO, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA, NFL type managing by "Dumb & Dumber"


Mike Shanahan is not here to win popularity contests with the fans, the players, the coaches or even the owner - ALL Mike Shanahan wants is to get this franchise back into a level of seeing a consistently competitive product on the field - that's who he is - get over it


too bad if you want him to stop abusing players and lying to everyone - not going to happen - I'm going to continue to watch the improvement that comes with having this major a**hole running this franchise because that is what he's going to do
we're a lot better, take it or leave it


There's a lot to like and a lot to find fault with:
- gotta love how he put down Haynesworth - what a slob
- shame about McNabb but we'll see what evil manouverings the FO can do with that in the next 6 months

Without Todd (8 years in Saunders system) for Jason, there is no 4 straight wins for a 5-7 team and no play-offs. Wish it really had been Deja Vu this year.

Collins replaced Campbell - the difference at that time was that Collins gave the team around him the opportunity to be successful
Collins as a QB was a good back-up and Campbell is still just a QB

Grossman has replaced McNabb ONLY so that Mike can see what he wants to do with both McNabb and Grossman going forward - IMO - Grossman is showing that he's a good back-up QB - Mike knows what he's got with McNabb

I think we draft a QB and that we'll find a starter or have McNabb as the starter - we are not going to be a very good franchise this next year but I would be surprised if Mike will make Grossman the starter

nothing that these guys do though is very easy to predict

it is going to be interesting to see who gets the reins as we continue to find an offensive line - this is a big part of this franchise's plans the next 6 months

maybe a lil too vague on my post. I meant that Todd and Gross was "better" acquainted with the X's and Oh's of this O. Here's my theory on the QB experiment. The coach wants to evaluate everyone, in order to do that he needs a "control" or a constant. How can you do evals on your WRs if the QB is not familiar with the play (or familiar enough). So Shan waited until the season is gone then ductaped the O line, put Gross in there and now he can run evals on everyone because Gross will run the play the way it is designed. This in no way guarantees a starting job to Gross, but gives him a great chance to show he can take over.

I doubt that Mike thinks Grossman can start but he does need to know if he wants to keep him or let him go
