Is Santana Moss a Keeper?

The contract of Santana Moss is expiring at the end of this season. Do we re-sign him of move on and find younger receivers?

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... -redskins/

When I think of all the big plays and games Moss has had for us - the Cowboy games, the Jacksonville OT game, the Lions punt return TD to name a few; but when I ask myself what have you done lately, I get drop balls in Dallas and against Minnesota to name a couple this year.

Questions: What is his salary for next year? How is his route running?

As much as it pains my heart, I am inclinded to say let him go unless he takes a big pay cut and I don't see him doing that.

I think he will be resigned. If you could put him in the slot, I think he would blow up. He is an again undersized receiver, I dont think teams will be lined up to throw big money at him. BUT I do think Carlos and Rocky are going to walk

So, you think that he will take a pay cut? You know how some players are, they rather play for less money with another team than take a pay cut with their current team.

What about all his drops this year?

I would keep Moss for vet leadership if we can get him @ a reasonable rate. I honestly believe with all the holes we have, it will rhurt us to lose Rocky and Carlos. Rocky's not elite in the 3-4, but he's not doing bad.

If we can land Vincent Jackson there is no one we would rather have on the other side than Moss. Or perhaps in the slot with Armstrong on the other side. Anyway, those three sound like a more dangerous combo than another year of Moss and Armstrong with Malcolm Kelly or whomever. Moss would be a 90+ catch receiver if there was any kind of threat on the other side. Allowing him to walk would be a poor business decision. I doubt he wants an unreasonable contract for what he brings to the table. If for some reason he does, then we may have no other choice. So many holes to fill, so few draft choices.

Sorry VET, but I dont think there is anyway resign those guys. Rocky is going to command a pretty solid contract, and as you said, he is not elite in the 3-4. We need to start drafting and signing players who fit our schemes. Not settling for OK players who dont fit it (Rocky)

As for Carlos, he may be one of the top CBs available in FA this year. There is no way we pay him DHall money to be a #2 CB for this team with all the other holes we have. Im thinking you can say hello to Phillip Buchannon as your #2 next year with Barnes in the Nickle.

As for V Jackson, I dont think he will be available. I read a tweet earlier in the week (I think from Schefter) saying that everyone knows VJax will be frachised again. I think WRs like Jones, Walker and Holmes are much more likely. Though none give you a true #1 guy

Just my opinions......

I will come to Redskins Park and personally drive Carlos Rogers to his next team. I know he can cover but he has lost this team many a game because he cannot hold onto a INT. On top of that he will want to be paid elite CB money and he has a bad attitude. Good riddance to CR22. Rocky - eh, he can stay or go.

Orakpo has regressed this year.....due to the scheme.

I wonder if Moss will want to come back? He's seemed pretty beat down this year after some of these losses.

Not sure if this has been discussed in another thread, but I was hearing on the radio this week that one of the untold stories about this season is how the Redskins have been positioning themselves for FA this spring. Apparently they did a nice job clearing the books, shedding a lot of contracts and this spring may be one of the biggest FA markets ever.

This link says that he is open to coming back.

That was the main reason to restructure Haynesworths and Halls contracts to clear the books so they can sign who they want even if the cap comes back.

I know a lot of people would disagree, but it would be really bad to lose Rogers... We don't have any one who can take his spot. And I don't want to have to take secondary in the first round again.

Moss would depend on how much money he wants. Either way, they should be looking at Jackson or somebody.

We have so many holes to fill we can't afford to lose Rocky, Carlos, Moss, or any other competent or above average player. The posts above are nonsense. We should be thinking about replacing offensive and defensive lineman, not spending draft picks on filling new holes that don't need to be created. Three linemen on offense need to be replaced and at least two on defense. Take a look at the stats of Carriker and Kemo.
Actually, the best way to take care of business is to go back to the 4-3 until the OL is rebuilt. Then, we can think about gathering players for the 3-4.

Not just starters we even need depth on both sides of the line

They are both coming off injuries and should be much better next year, although it would be hard not to be much better next year.

The process has already started, too late to go back now.

Moss is a tough decision. He has been vital in big wins and also one of the main causes on some losses. He really hurt us in the Vikings game and had a chance to possibly win the game against Dallas, but took he away from the ball and at the safety (Who was actually over-running the play. He is very good in some areas, but very inconsistent in others. We should probably resign him if he is looking for a reasonable amount.

Moss is in the top ten in receptions, targets, YAC, and in the top 20 in yards.

You know what he isn't in the top 20 in?

Drops!

He has been targeted 124 times, caught 79 passes, and dropped six passes.

Now it seems like he has dropped more than six to me to, but that is what he is officially documented having. As fans we blame the WR a lot of times and the NFL sees it as a bad pass.

Tana's yards / catch has dropped over the last couple of years. I don't know how much of that is not having a possession receiver other than Cooley or if Tana has just lost a step. I think it is the latter.

But we still need him back. At this stage in his career he will probably get more money from the skins then anyone else.

Can you imagine what he could do on the Patriots or the Colts? The same for Cooley. If Cooley and Dallas Clark switched places, Cooley would rack up more stats!

Thanks for the stats on Santana that puts things into better perspective. I would like to see Santana back. I am sure that he has the Shanahan work ethic, but it will come down to money. I agree with you that he would flourish in the Colts system.

hopefully like the Patriots or the Ravens, a contract is extended to him that meats our goals not his. If he wants to find a team that offers more, then leave. If he wants to stay for less, then so be it.

I hope Moss can come back at the right price. He has admitted to not practicing as hard in the offseason and I believe he has not been in the best of shape the past few years....similar to how Portis was. Lack of conditioning equals lack of focus, which equal drop passes.

Great number two guy right now.

To me its simple. I have seen lackluster performance from Moss. So if he demands big star money its goodbye. However if he asks a reasonable price we should only keep him in the slot like Wes Welker in New England. Also we have to either aquire a WR via free agency or the draft.

I doubt that Moss will seak "big star" money even though he produced as a top ten WR this year! As a matter of fact he has really out produced Welker!
