we'd be lucky to get one of those guys

The big issue is how much money we will spend to get players like Ngata and Mankins?

Shanahan spent time visiting the Patriots. I think that he is going to follow their model (he even copied their defense). That model is not paying the big bucks for players except their franchise QB. I have a feeling even without the cap, we are not going to get the top tier FA's because we are going to do like the Patriots and not spend the money on top tier FA's. I do believe that Shanahan will get players that can fit his system and can be coached and are hungry and have that work ethic.

Mike Shanahan is NOT copying anything - this guy is doing what he thinks is best - AND he has a huge EGO - not that that's a bad thing but he's certainly shown to have a lot of "quirks" that have not been helpful since he took over IMO

We are using the 3-4 because that's what he thinks gives him the best defense - that we did not have the players to suit this was a big mistake IMO

He brought in McNabb - great choice over Campbell but not exactly a great choice as a QB for Kyle's offense - McNabb (apparently) did not apply himself very diligently - not a good thing for this HC
McNabb is most likely not here because of the $10mil - another mistake by Mike but the lost picks will only be an issue if Mike gets nothing in return for a year of a great leader and an OK, not good QB

Mike has shown to be very inflexible and very, very demanding - maybe he thinks this was needed here - we shall see

I do think that Snyder is going to support whatever Mike wants financially - but he's also going to want to see a lot more this coming season

When we have to read about how displeased the team owner was with a QB change that took place while he was conveniently out of the country and unavailable for consultation it does not bode well for the owner opening his wallet in free agency. The conversation would likely be of the "You wasted two draft picks for a QB you had to have that you no longer want less than a season later. You got nothing out of a player I had to pay over $40 Million. I am not seeing results here. In fact I am seeing more problems being created. I refuse to spend more money or we lose more draft picks for players who "don't fit the system" or players you can't work with. What were you thinking when you brought in a QB without the receivers? What were you thinking when you went to a 3-4 defense without the personnel? What were you thinking when you dropped your hand-picked QB to third string, and don't give me any of that "evaluation" nonsense you gave the press. Why did he have to find out through the media? Why did I have to find out through the media? I don't care for your tactics and am not convinced that spending is going to resolve anything. I've been down that road more than once. This organization was 4-12 last season and your solutions thus far have been to change an effective 4-3 defense, to bring in two wide receivers no one else wanted and to alienate and divide the players while trading away draft picks. Did I mention the benching the QB you hand-picked and spent two draft picks on while I was unreachable? And you want what from me?"

OK, "copying" IS the wrong word with Shanahan, but with his visit to the Pats last year, would you accept that that visit may have influenced him on how to manage the Redskins this year?

Then Synder asked himself, What was I thinking when I gave Shanahan total authority? What I was I thinking when I refused to re-sign Antonio pierce? What was I thinking when I refused to hire Gregg Williams? What was I thiking when I hired Steve Spurrier? What was I thinking when I fired Marty Schottenheimer? What was I thinking when I re-hired Vinny? What was I thinking when I bought the Redskins in the first place?
Danny is sure doing a lot of thinking.

Daniel M. Snyder doesn't question himself. He's just a fan with a fatter wallet. He puts people in positions to make football decisions and trusts their judgment, usually to his detriment. He knows he isn't a football guru and he learned the hard way that Cerrato wasn't. So he brings in people who are supposedly football people and gets out of their way, only to see the same results. That's what he is thinking. Blaming himself is not part of the equation. Do you blame yourself for being a fan? I don't. Neither does he.

If I recall correctly Dan and Vinny went to some college games together paticularly a Notre Dame game to see Jimmy Clausen. When Danny fired Schottenheimer, he said that it wasn't fun watching someone else run his team meaning that he had been involved in personnal actions (This was reported last year on ESPN 980) Your comments are the first that have read or heard that seem to be saying that Danny was not a hands on owner (in the image of his mentor Jerry Jones) I think that you are correct that he doesn't question himself.

Yes - I think that Mike was preparing himself to return to coaching in the only way he could and that was to look at anything and everything that he thought would help him when he got back - he had the time and the desire to be influenced as to what made certain franchises more successful

Since this tread is what FAs we are going to fill and it seems like people here got off the subject. Lets start with the OLine can we? I say Kalil for one he's young(26) and is a good fit in the ZBS, next is Davin Joseph perfect ZBS guard young(26) and I believe Bruce Allen drafted the guy. Guess we can stop there for now. Lets see WR we can get Jacoby Jones young(26) 6'2" 210 and James Jones(27) 6'1" 215. That takes care of the weaknesses in the offense and come cheap all probably averaging 4 million a year. Next we go to the Defense. First and for most go and get Soloila NT for the Dolphins his young(27) and a beast this year, next get Joseph CB from Cincy he's young (26), and last but not least Thabi Hali OLB from Chiefs. Everthing else we can get in the draft.

If we get two Jones' at WR how will we tell them apart?? Crap, they're both almost the same size too! Maybe one wont be in football shape and can't play.

Crikey. For the number of names I'm not seeing many that stand out as sensible additions for a rebuilding Redskins franchise. I can't see how it makes sense to sign older veterans who won't be around in a few years, even as fill-ins. We need players who are not entrenched in a system other than the one this Redskins team is using. I realize this isn't going to be a popular opinion but I think we should trade off our veterans so they can play for contending teams while we rebuild. We need draft picks more than used and abused free agents.

Eee Gads! You said the "R" word - rebuilding! Look, you made me say it. I agree with you we are doing just that. That is why we didn't sign a bunch of guys during last year's thin FA market. The thing to really watch and see is how tight with spending will we be in this year's deep market. We desparately need a strong NT - do we spend the big bucks and out bid other teams for the best guy out there? OR will we stay the course for the long range "rebuilding" and get work ethic guys and coach them up? The latter means that we are looking at Shanahan's third season to be a top team. I am going to predict that the wallet is not opened up and we go after work ethic guys rather than studs.

Personally I would use FA to fix the offense (or try to) and use the draft to try to fix the D(again or try to)Only position I would use FA for defensivly is NT, because I dont see much there in the draft.

Now I do realize that we may have to spend our 1st rounder on a QB, but thats the only high pick I would use there. You have to think we are going to atleast get 2 more draft picks around the 3rd or 4th (McNabb and Haynesworth) and maybe more if we go into rebuilding mode by trading others (Cooley, Carter).

Here is my team next yr in my perfect world...

QB - Grossman/Beck/1st Rounder
HB - Torain/Sproles(FA)/Williams
FB - Sellers
WR - Jones(FA)/Walter(FA)/Moss
TE - Davis/Paulsen
LT - Williams
LG - Mankins (FA)
C - Khalil (FA)
RG - Joseph (FA)
RT - Brown

CB - Hall
CB - Buchanon/Barnes
FS - Moore/Late Draft pick
SS - Landry
OLB - Orakpo
OLB - 2nd rounder
ILB - Fletcher
ILB - 3rd rounder (McNabb trade)
DE - Carriker
NT - Free Agent Signing
DE - Gholston/4th Rounder (Haynesworth Trade)

That still leaves you with a 2nd or 3rd depending on what you get for Cooley. I know its easy to say that but its another for all these kids to pan out. Just my 2 cents...

You don't think Perry Riley will be ready for next year? At least proved he could tackle against Dallas. Do you really want Golston starting? He gets pushed around quite a bit = one of the reasons our run defense was weak. He also got pushed around in the 4-3. I like the guy and he is a hard worker, but in a perfect world wouldn't he be a back up? In a perfect world, can't you find a better tackler at free safety than Moore?
Wow, Cooley's gone. That is a bold move, although I don't think that it is a bad move because you have Davis and Cooley has more trade value. That's a Kick A O line!
Curious who are you targeting for QB in the draft? With no cap and Danny's money, you could sign all of those guys, but I don't know what the repercussions wil be when the cap comes back. As you pointed out, this is your team in a perfect world, but how the Skins fill some holes i.e. O line with FA's and NT with an FA might be done your way.

Ravens will not let Ngata get away. No way.

I'd love to have Mankins (well as much quality OL as we can get) and Vincent Jackson.

I would also like them to take a look at Michael Bush. If Portis doesn't come back, we will need a backup RB since Torain has a history of injury issues. Bush is a good RB hidden behind McFadden in Oakland. IMO he would've been a 1st round pick if not for a broken leg in his last year at Louisville.

I also don't see us trading Cooley. I would trade Davis. You might not get as much for him, but he has shown he can play at a very high level in the NFL. Plus Cooley is a better blocker and more complete TE. And Cooley's attitude is something that more people on this team need to have. He is all about winning and if he isn't playing up to his expectations and isn't helping his team win he gets angry with himself.

Mankins is going to cost to much and I can settle on Kalil and Joseph. That leaves the left out of the guards we got. Or we can use a 3rd for a guard. Next Perry Riley is going to be starting next year and he is a upgrade of what we got now or we get Harris from the Jets and let Riley learn from Fletcher for 1 more year. Next We don't need Sproles he going to want lots of money too. We can get a RB in the seventh round and be good with it. Gholston is not no starter he is a backup. Hopefully Bruce and Mike can work their magic and get Dareus from Bama with our first pick. And be able to trade up again and ge our QB. I tell you one team we can do this with and that is the Patriots. Yes I believe we are going to get Soliala NT from the dolphins. So him and Dareus is a big start. Olb can be got in the 2nd round I think like a Houston from UG. We do got pieces to move and so we can position ourselves to get alot of stuff we need in the Draft and FA.

draft qb, guard in first two rds.

Sign VJax

Find something at nosetackle, Bryant looks like an option to split time

see if you can squeeze in a FA center/guard cheaper than Mankins

Keep Rogers

OLB/Free Safety are possible concerns

Crap we need a right tackle too.

We're screwed for at least another year

How about Ricky Williams sharing time with Torain? Those two along with Williams and Sellars and we'd be pretty set IMO at that position. If we can bring VJax, that'll fill the WR position because we have Moss and Armstrong (along with whoever else). We have the TEs already so we can concentrate on QB/OL and Defense. What you folks think?
