So I don't get it... first they said it was a "buyout" of his contract and now he is "fired" as HC...?

I didn't know that a buyout = being fired.

It was in his contract that he would get $2 Million if he was fired before his contract expired. So, not technically a buyout although that is the legal language. They tried to get him to retire so they wouldn't have to fire him. He refused so they told him to hit the bricks.
