Playing for a draft pick

Do you really want to know why Shanahan & Co. have decided to start Grossman over McNabb?

They're writing the rest of the year off.

They WANT to lose every game for the rest of the year so they can get a high draft pick next year and, perhaps, draft a stud QB for this franchise moving forward.

How do you folks like this plan?

If that is the plan it is yet another in a growing list of failed decisions.

I keep saying this in other threads that "evaluating talent" against teams like Dallas or other division opponents is BS. It's padding your draft pick and it makes me disgusted with this team.

Is it really. If you think about it in all honesty, evaluating talent now makes a lot more sense than the 3rd or 4th week of preseason. The way we're doing it right now, gives us a leg up. Sure, if we lose, we increase our chance of bettering our draft position but if we win, then we're hopefully doing it with young guys who are out there proving themselves.

Look - the coaching staff and front office have made mistakes after mistakes this year but IMO, this isn't one of them. I'm taking the Cooley approach in saying "Why the hell not."

I agree Frank. They may not be so worried about losing at this point, but that they are tanking on purpose for that reason is preposterous. Creating a losing culture would be a lot more harmful then moving up a few slots for one player would help.

No QB on the Skins roster right now will be starting next year thats why...

I think the numbers agree with you. I think they are evaluating Grossman & Beck are going to be evaluated to see if they are a back next year in the back up role but I can't feel confident in either one that they are starting potential.

I say..."Great!!!"

Get as high a First Rounder as possible to draft a Franchise QB. Use the second rounder on a DL. Trade the late rounders for a high fourth rounder and take OL. Fill the rest of the holes with the 2012-13 draft and free agency after the lockout.

I must admit it looks that way but I think this is a huge mistake by Mike if that is the case

IF as is expected, Kyle and Rex do not have a very good time against this defense then Kyle's job as well as Grossman's status has to also be in question next year

That won't happen. Kyle is the HC'skid and Rex is Kyle's buddy from Houston. Neither of them are going anywhere. That's why I don't like having more than one member of a family on a coaching staff. Especially kids of the HC.

If true, it's smart. It would be a sign that for once this franchise is actually thinking about the future for once.

So you think losing on purpose is a good way to build for the future? I find that an impossible contradiction

There is no way they are playing for a draft pick. That's a lack of pride. I still think the benching of McNabb has nothing to do with evaluating talent. Everyone in the NFL knows what we have in Grossman. Its just a scapegoat.

In 2007 the Boston Celtics seemingly "threw" the season in order to bag Kevin Durant. Obviously they got screwed in the NBA lottery and missed out, but that prompted trades for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and they won the title the next season.

Purposefully throwing a game isn't going to be good but taking a lost season and evaluating talent on the roster is. It gives us a chance to evaluate our guys and possibly showcase them to other teams. We're mathematically eliminated. Who cares if we end 5-11?

Outside of the QB position, I don't see where they are evaluating talent any more than they already were.

It's clearly not losing on purpose. It's giving your backups and younger players a chance to show what they can do. It's the only move that makes sense at this point.

I just don't think that their thinking or game planning has anything to do with the draft - they want this team to win each and every game AND they're trying to evaluate players to get to the goals that they have set

I completely disagree that Mike will "protect" his son or that he will let Kyle play favourites - I just don't agree with those assumptions

Bruce and Mike will get this franchise back to playing consistently good football each week and they will use whatever coaches and players give them the best chance to achieve that

One fumble, two INT's, three hundred passing yards, and four TD passes...didn't look like they were trying to lose any more than usual to me.

Agreed. I think this team got EXACTLY what it needed today.... (and I'll admit I was wrong thinking we'd go out there and just play out the string)

PROOF that Kyle's offense has some teeth to it when properly executed. Proof that we have a quality Backup QB in Rex Grossman who can run this offense if necessary. We also saw Donovan "Done" McEagle get his nose rubbed in his poo by Rex and Kyle and Mike. The defense also showed that when it is aggressive it can make some plays. Not ALL of the plays, but some of them; and showed that we do have some talent on that side of the ball. The ST is the only group I was really disappointed in today.

Oh, and we still lost, which will still help our Draft Position.

I doubt that one draft position more or less really matters. Shanahan wants to win. I was baffled by his benching of McNabb, but now I'm just generally baffled.

(Nothing new, of course!)

An excellent characterization... and exactly what I have a problem with. It will forever color my impressions of this coaching staff.

No one has more insight than you.

I, on the other hand, am often clueless. I get... and I got... the reason for the change. I had a problem with when they did it (Dallas Week), and continue to have a problem with HOW they did it.

Nah, they are just upset that they traded for someone that needs alot of help. We can't help him. I have said this a million times already. Not that I know anything.
