Two Words of Hope.....

There are two words which keep ringing in my ears which give some sort of brightness to the next three weeks as we limp to the end lf a 5-11 season. These words are a hope, a dream, and really nothing more. These words are....
Cam Newton
Of course it will take a bit of "Luck" to make it happen. If Luck doesn't come out and Newton does, we are hosed. Newton would be gone before we get to pick in that case. Even if he does, we have to hope that someone doesn't jump over us to take Newton.
Still, he's one of a very small number of things that keeps me hanging on during this wretched season.

I love the kid... but, he's not quite NFL ready... I think he'll declare, but I hope he does not come out.
If he does come out, I doubt that he gets to us.
Buuuuuuuut.... If he does, he'll be in an excellent situation, with a built in mentor with a similar physical skill set... and, we'd be in line to have a franchise QB...
Of course, the way it's looking right now, this draft will be pretty deep with quality quarterbacks, who may have "franchise" potential.

Not with the number EIGHT pick in the first round. We did that last year. If we needed another Tackle or if there was a sure-thing NT or 3-4 DE I would agree with you but there isn't one in this draft. Unless you're telling me that you can GUARANTEE a trade down still gets us the guy we want, I'm not interested.

As I said that will depend on "Luck" and who else is looking for a QB in the top 8 picks.

Agreed. That's part of why I want him in DC.

That I disagree with. Newton is really the only one I want. Maybe Luck but there's no chance of that happening. The others have holes that I'm not interested in dealing with from what I read.

I agree that if we do pick Newton, he would be in an ideal spot here in DC. He could sit 2 yrs behind McNabb and learn the ropes. Mcnabb in his younger days was very similar to the type of QB Newton is, so that could be a great situation.
If we pick top 10, there will not be an offensive lineman there for us to take unless you are thinking RT, but I really think we should extend Brown and let him heal up. He was all pro LT, you got to think he should be a beast RT when he is healthy. We need interior lineman, who are not drafted until agter 18 usually. So you either trade down to pick a late 1st and an extra 2nd or 3rd or you draft D Line.
If you are planning on drafting D Line, there are not alot of options. There are not too many DTs in college who could be a true NT in the NFL worthy of a top 10 pick. BUT, Marcel Dareus is slotted as a top 10 pick. This guy plays 3-4 DE at Alabama, and could be what we need on that D Line. If he is there when we pick, that should be it, even if Cam is there.
Im still in favor of trading down to pick up an O Lineman later in the draft, then drafting Marcel Dareus, if he's not there then fine take Cam Newton and draft G/C in round 2.

I kinda like the kid from Boise state, he is supersmart, and is a winner, (not to mention he might be around come 2nd or 3rd round?, wait, do we even have a 2nd or 3rd rd pick?)

2nd, yes. 3rd, no.

I keep seeing Dareus listed as a 4-3 DT at the next level onthe sites I look at.
While I agree we need to upgrade the lines I'd rather do it in the second round and later plus through free agency where value can be found.
If we have a shot at a franchise QB we need to take it.

Ok. That's fine. So what do want to do with the #8 pick in the first round?

if we pick 1st to 10th pick, it'll prolly be a skill position, WR, RB or maybe even a O line guy. I really do not think it will be a QB. Knowing how antsy father and son is to get Sexy Rexy in to replace McNabb, I doubt they take on another QB next year.
If we pick 11th to 32nd it will prolly be a LB, or a monster D line guy.
Of course I'm going from what we need. I just think that Cam will not be there by the time we pick, even if he is I seriously doubt Shanny takes him.

I dont see us taking Cam Newtown with a top 10 pick .. for that matter I dont see any team taking him in the top 10.. who is projecting him as a top 10 pick? I have not seen that anywhere..
and if we take him with our 1st pick then clearly nothing has changed with this team.. we do not need to be wasting our picks this year on a project QB..
We need depth and talent everywhere and we have a veteran QB here for at least the next season .. we can start worrying about the QB of the future come 2012 or 13..

Except that, hopefully, this will be the last draft in the top 10 for a while so if the team is going to be there they may as well take the best available skill player and if that is a QB then so be it.

If the best available skill player is a QB then Im sure there is a QB needy team willing to trade up and take him which would allow us to move down and acquire more picks.. a QB is not the answer and unless we can get LUCK then IMO drafting a QB would be a waste.. Cam Newton is not the answer

I must admit, that was what I was expecting to see. Cam Newton is a fantastic player. He reminds me of a better version of Vince Young at Texas. I just don't know what to make of him as a Pro QB, precisely because of that comparison.

He is a heck of an athlete but I am not sold on him being a big pro star. He has accuracy issues and in college he makes a lot of plays because he is so much faster than D-lineman and LB's. It would take him a while to adjust to the speed of the pro game. I also can't stand his attitude.

I've been hearing those for two decades. They now fall on totally deaf ears unless I see something that makes me think otherwise. I see ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that makes me think this team will be any more to my liking at this time NEXT YEAR than it is right now.

I truly hope that we aren't looking WR or RB in the Top 10. I don't see one there that I like. Until the idea of Newton coming out came to me I didn't see a QB there who I liked either.
I don't see us taking another OT, so a Top 10 pick would be waste on a Lineman (Offensive or Defensive).
I'm hoping that we either find a skill position player we like at #8 or we just trade totally out of the First Round so I don't have to watch the draft at all.

I haven't either. He's the #2 ranked QB several places I've seen if he and Luck both come out and without any WR or RB I like up there, he's the guy I would want at #8

We have a veteran QB who has proven he can't run the OC's system. He's also from a rival team, so I don't want him here to begin with. I agree we've got holes to fill but I would rather do that through Free Agency, personally.

Cocky, Brash and Bold are some of the things I LIKE in a football player. These "Aw shucks, it's the team...." types can go take a flying leap in my mind.

I like Mallet a lot. He was a freshman at Michigan and he's a quick learner and got the size and arm for the NFL. There are a lot of good DL's and CB's that'll be available when we pick. I don't know which DL's are suited for the 3-4 though. If we draft a CB, please draft one who can freaking CATCH!
