Who are the 12 guys with us now you'd like to see still with us after 3 more years go by?
The first that come to mind for me are Trent Williams,

ey, Orakpo, Landry, and Gano. Please tell me we have 7 more. (I'd love to see Fred Davis and Ryan Torain prove worthy.)

Dude, come on... not all keepers are elite... not all are starters...
Zo Alexander... dude's not an all pro... but is solid as a rock, and pure team oriented... will do anything he's asked to do, just because somebody needs to do it...
Brandon Banks... speed kills.
Adam Carriker... does what he's asked to do within the scheme... does not make mistakes... is where he's expected to be, does what he's expected to do... consistency has a quality all it's own.
Reed Doughty... again, almost never makes a mistake. Makes up in heart and brains what he lacks in athleticism. Enjoys hitting. Probably most solid tackler on the team, next to Fletcher.
Kedrick Golston... work, work, work...
Hunter Smith... after his antics last year... and his solid games this year, how can you not love him? Old? sure... but, how young does a punter need to be?
That gets you to 11...

Why only 12?

Good question... I think his point is, there are a lot of players who simply will not be here next year.
Hey, I forgot the BMW... unless his health completely collapses, there is every reason to believe he'll be playing RG (that stands for Road Grader) next year.

. I agree. That's why I named a couple who I hope prove worthy. Only 12 because we are getting old and I want to draft 15 keepers in the next 3 years and acquire 15 others. That makes about 42 on the roster with slop room for 5 more ... undrafted FAs and the like. I like most of the guys you named but am thinking anyone over 30 now should be gone in 4 years.
Thus, of the young ones not starting now, which are "keepers?" And did I leave out a few current starters or are they all too old to keep that long?

Banks, Orakpo,

ey or Davis, Landry, Zo, Torain, Williams, Hall, Gano, Riley (i hope he can play LB), Austin, Armstrong
And I'll throw Will Montgomery out there. I hope he gets more chances at center and proves worthy of being a starter.
That's 13.

I'm rooting for Perry Riley big time. The dude is a house and would fit this defense. I think they are grooming him for a year similar to what they do with the Steelers LB's.

What the heck, I'll play. My keepers would be:
Armstrong, Banks,

ey, Davis, T Williams, Brown, Carriker, Golston, Orakpo, Alexander, Landry.
I can't get to 12 at the first attempt. The names above are the players that I think have proven their worth already, or have shown sufficient potential to be worth sticking with.
McNabb is a wildcard - at the start of the season, I would have expected to include him in such a list, but I'm not clear that he is in the Redskins'plans for 3 years down the line.
Terence Austin, Will Montgomery and Perry Riley could make the list if only they got a chance to prove themselves. Jarmon could be there if they find a position for him.
Other than that, the cupboard remains frighteningly bare.

man, I hope that we start looking at Perry Riley in for Macintosh if Mac is not part of our future now that the season is over. At least get him in the rotation. For some reason, and I have nothing to go on but a hunch, I feel good about this guy.
Probably eat my words at some point, but he looks like a beast.
I like how they cut Galloway and brought up Austin to make call on him as well. See what these young guys can do. I also see Banks playing on offense more as well.

You obviously forgot Heyer, or was that assumed?
Sorry, I was amusing myself. I'd definitely include McNabb. The one I'm surprised you don't include is Jarmon, I like him a lot. I'm hoping Barnes and Horton are keepers as well, but I can't say I do project them. We also have more young players it's just too early to evaluate for them. That we can't name which ones doesn't mean they aren't assets.
But overall, I am not disagreeing we're weak in that outlook now. There are a lot more changes coming...and that's needed.

Kaz - I like Jarmon too, which is why he got a mention. I hope they find a position for him, because the 3-4 doesn't seem like a good fit for him.
Barnes, Horton and Kareem Moore are others that I'd like to see make it, but that's based more on hope than judgement at the moment.

PS - I'm assuming that somebody will humanely dispose of Mr Heyer sometime soon.

I agree, but I'm just saying that some of them will. We may not know which ones, but that we can't name 12 doesn't mean we don't think 12 will make it.

I would add Williams and Montgomery on the OL.

Barnes is finally getting some playing time. Horton would be good if we didn't have Landry but we do have Landry. Moore has not shown me anything that warrants him staying in the B&G.
I keep T Williams, Leicht, W Montgomery,

ey, Davis, Torrain, McIntosh, Landry, Orakpo, Carriker, One Man Gang (OMG acronym, kinda funny), and Riley (hopefully steps in to Fletcher's shoes).
Also for consideration: Armstrong, Jarmon, Barnes (possibly).

I do like the idea that some players are getting time to play to see if in fact they can be a part of this group next year
we all know that there is going to be another big change in faces here
I just hope that the "reports" of a large number of good quality free agents is true and that this FO and their scouts can find some nuggets because we need a lot of help and we don't have as many draft picks as we'd like
ALSO .... hopefully the player's association and the NFL get their act together as well

So where do we stand on the original question (from 12-10-2010) now?

My top 15 or so right now would be Williams, Montgomery, Chester, Davis, Paul, Hankerson, Helu, Cofield, Carriker, Bowen, Kerrigan, Orakpo, Landry, Banks, Gano, and Rocca.
I feel like a top-flight Nose Tackle would help us A LOT. So would 2 LBs the Steelers always seem to have too many of. Our DBs would look awesome if, due to an awesome presence at nose, Cofield were part of a rotation at END and all our LBs were good at ... ahem ... tackling.
2 awesome GAURDS would be nice too. Helu could run wild then IF we had a QUARTERBACK who could make a defense pay.
Nose, 2 LBs, 2 Gs, QB.

We have good guys, way more than 12. It'll keep getting better. This is almost a stealth thread of roster negativity. lol

as long as we continue to add staters along with solid back ups and the youth movement continues i think we will be ok
orakpo kerrigan landry jenkins mcintosh davis williams golston armstrong riley austin montgomery and neil the back up NT
and hankerson would love to see him play more maybe become a redzone threat

I hear you CLL - but I look at this thread as ALSO being indicative of some progress here
let me put it this way - there are more players here at this time that we can look at as possibly being helpful going forward than we had at this time last year
I really think another good draft plus free agency will see this franchise contending for a playoff spot in 2012
WE HAVE TO GET A GOOD QB - and we will

My guess is a lot of the guys you are considering will be a little old in 3 more years. I'm asking who is with us now that will serve as future building blocks? Moss? Nah. Jamal Brown? Maybe. Fletch? No way.
Not negativity AT ALL. Looking for the keepers we have now upon whom we can be building now and in 3 years.
