Redskins next for Wade Phillips?

Per Rotoworld:

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora suggests that former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips' next landing spot could be Washington.

The Redskins' "defense" is currently coordinated by Jim Haslett, whose unit ranks dead last in yards allowed per game, 31st against the pass, and 25th against the run. La Canfora cites Phillips' "strong ties" to Mike Shahanan, as both were assistants on the Broncos' staff in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Phillips is also obviously familiar with the NFC East.

It's obviously just an opinion on the part of JLC, but it makes sense. Jim Haslet sucks, Wade Phillips is an excellent defensive coach who many on the Cowboys were extremely loyal to, but he couldn't win with an anemic offense and a team of stars with no role players. Phillips does have strong ties to Shanahan and he runs the type of offense that Shanny wants. I think it would be an excellent move, because I sure don't see Haslet coming back.

At this point... Whatever, Haslett is the worst.

Bring him in. Haslett sucks, Phillips doesn't. Phillips is a coordinator, not a Head Coach. Besides, he knows how to beat the Cowboys.

Agreed. Phillips is a good D coordinator, he just can't be a head coach.

Not at the expense of losing Spanos. This guy is one awesome coach. If Wade would come in and Spanos stays, I'm on board. If not, I'd rather elevate Spanos to DC.

If Laconfora is saying it? It has more credibility then if some other reporter were to say. Who knows I hope this story, rumor or suggestion builds up momentum and becomes reality.

Haslett is just in over his head. He continually fails to put together a good game plan and just stinks at making adjustments. 59 points! I would have fired him on the spot.

No thank you to anything associated with that nasty star.

I don't see Phillips being a good fit with Shanny. Phillips is a "player's coach" and shanny's got a clear line between the two.

You might be right, but could it be any worse than it is right now? Wade needs work and Haslett needs to vanish. Both require immediate attention.

At this point anyone is better than Haslett.

At what point should Shanny step in and help Haslet? Isn't it about time that he does?

I don't really know what to think about Haslett. This is after all year one of his transition from 4-3 to 3-4. Even so, going from a top ten defense to the worst in the league is a huge issue. I don't think its too much for fans to have expected Haslett keep the defense at least middle of the pack from where it was last year.

I think Wade Phillips is one of those guys who is a great D-coordinator who should never be a head coach ever. And Dallas or not, I would be more than happy to have him coaching our defense.

I don't think it is going to happen. This is the same thing that happened to him in Denver. They wanted him (Shanny) to get rid of his defensive coordinator and he refused. He might have learned from it but he will decide if and when it happens I am afraid. At least I believe this is what happened. Some people believe that bend but don't break is ok as long as we are winning. I mentioned this before in an older thread. IT DOES MATTER. If you are playing bend but don't break Marty ball then I can live with that. If you are dealing with what we are it keeps your defense on the field and your offense on the bench. NOT GOOD.

Haslett may not be that bad if he has some help. He has shown signs of running an ok defense at times this year. Someone needs to help him fix this mess.

I think the real question is, does Shanny think he was that wrong about Haslett, or does he think they have not yet transitioned enough personnel to run the defense that both he and Haslett decided to run? I would think the latter is more likely the case. He's known Haslett for quite a while. I think it'll be hard for Shanny to point the finger at him this soon into converting to a new defense.

Just this...

1. With last year's defense... we win Monday, IMHO.

2. Wade = players coach. That whole Wade won't fit with Shanny is a non-starter. Shanahan has no problem being the bad guy.

3. Not happening... at least, not until some time next year. They are going to give Haslett his shot... good or bad.

giving him his shot is a good idea. as long as we did the switch we have to stick with it at least for a while to see if we can make it work. the other option is to switch again thus confusing the living daylights out of our players. we all saw what happens to an O when we switch systems every year. lets not make the same mistake with the D. lets let it ride

Can we just bring back Greg Williams? He was my favorite redskins coach the last ten years. This includes Gibbs. I've given up on Haslet but Haslet is also know as a players coach so I don't see that being the issue with Phillips.

I wish. If Snyder just gave him the job I could deal with the growing pains much easier because I know he is the real deal.

Really? His record as a head coach, and the decisions he made (Rob Johnson was his call) in Buffalo would indicate otherwise.

Whole reason he came here was to learn under Joe. He knew he didn't have the knowledge needed so he learned from Joe which some speculated would take over when Joe retired once again. I have more confidence in him than I do the Shanny's or Haslett. I also think there would have been growing pains but I could deal with that much easier.
