Haynesworth says contract doesn’t make him ‘slave’

WASHINGTON (AP)—Albert Haynesworth(notes) said Saturday his $100 million contract doesn’t make him a slave
to the Washington Redskins.
In an interview with 106.7 The Fan, the two-time All-Pro defensive tackle said the big paychecks don’t mean he can’t push back when the team asks him to play a different position.

Haynesworth, who rarely speaks to the media, was upset this year when the Redskins switched to a 3-4 defense and told him he would be playing nose tackle.
Haynesworth protested by staying away from the team’s offseason conditioning program and practices. He also skipped a mandatory minicamp and was unable to pass the team’s conditioning test until the 10th day of training camp—all despite receiving a $21 million bonus on April 1.
“I guess in this world we don’t have a lot of people with, like, backbones,” Haynesworth said. “Just because somebody pay you money don’t mean they’ll make you do whatever they want or whatever. I mean, does that mean everything is for sale?
“I mean, I’m not for sale. Yeah, I signed the contract and got paid a lot of money, but … that don’t mean I’m for sale or a slave or whatever.”
Haynesworth said it was agreed that he would play defensive tackle in a 4-3 system when he signed with the Redskins in 2009, but the team has since overhauled its front office, coaching staff and offensive and defensive schemes. He said he now likes the new scheme better as he works with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.
Haynesworth made a passing reference to his disputes with coach Mike Shanahan, saying some things “went down with me and Mike,” but he did not elaborate. He also said he doesn’t like the spotlight and would rather be someone who can just “go to Wal-Mart and hang out.”
Haynesworth implied he would be playing in Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams. He was used as a backup in the season opener against Dallas and missed last week’s game against Houston with a sprained ankle.

Something tells me that Big Al could make $100 million or 100 x $100 million and there's a good chance he'll be broke 5 years after he's left the NFL.

It's a shame that the title of this thread will do more to dictate the flow of discussion in this thread than the actual content of the article.

Um wow glad I gave it a listen. Quotes seem out of context to me and not at all how he was coming across. The way the question was dealt got that kind of answer.. It was about how mcnabb isn't asked to play rb etc and what he felt about being asked to switch to nose guard in a 3-4. He also went in to how he was promised stuff when signing to a 4-3 team but he likes hasletts packages and he will get more opportunities to get after the qb = more sacks and what he's ultimately after.
Media definitely didn't go in to how Albert gave the office people trainers ect all 42" (or something) flat screens and said he's gonna do something cool again after. The season or this season.
Definitely a good listen and I must honestly admit I see him different and have no worries about him eventually having a good year. This might as well be a contract year cus he keeps his or gets another depending on how he produces.

I hope he has a great year and shows incredible enthusiasm and great camaraderie with his team mates and coaches
I think he's not here next year, no matter what - maybe I'm a little biased about this guy, but I hope he's not a part of this franchise as soon as we can get something decent for him
No question, we are a better defense with him on the field but I think we might be a better team if we replace this guy with a player that not only can help address an area of need but that wants to be a part of the whole scene and not just what suits the player - this is still foremost a team game and this guy is not really interested in that
I am very glad that we have guys in charge here that know what they are doing because I'm pretty sure that Snyder and Cerrato would not be handling this guy very well at all

I love how the story is headlined on espn.com:
Hanynesworth: Contract doesn't make me a 'slave'
That headline is entirely misleading and a really piss poor way to report the interview, but if I had a dime for every time the world wide leader pulled these kind of shenanigans, I'd have a lot of dimes.

Still an incredibly stupid thing to say. Of course in this day and age the media is going to run with it and its going to get blown out of proportion. But to say his 100 mil. (48 million really) situation is akin to SLAVERY?! Seriously.... Slavery. I dont really get offended at anything, but thats pretty weak. Can you imagine what the repercussions would be if a white person said that? I think it just takes away and minimalizes from people that have truly been affected by slavery and racism. Again i personallly dont get worked up about it, but maybe he should have said it doesnt make him a Robot or somthing instead.

I think you failed to get his point. The word he was looking for was indentured servant. He merely was trying to get across ya he signed a contract a contract for a position in a different scheme he was guaranteed different things then now. Also just cus he took the money doesn't mean you can change the terms. Hey stood his ground had a "back bone" until he realized the D is actually gonna be better for him

say what
are you kidding me
please explain how a defensive player can relate the ability to play a different position on the defensive side of the ball to a QB playing a different position on offense
the old expression comes to mind - sometimes you're not sure how dumb someone is until they say something and remove all doubt
this is just amazing to me - no wonder this guy does not do too many interviews

That's Mark Twain. Better to keep one's mouth closed and be thought a fool then open it and remove all doubt...

one more thing Kaz - I think I'll take your advice and not get into anything more about Haynesworth
I'll let him show everone how good a player and all round team mate he really is

Someone needs to ask AL what exactly 100 Mil does obligate him to do? Show up for off-season workouts? No. Show up for mini-camps? No. Give the new system a try before demanding a trade? No. Get into shape for the regular season? No. Be a positive influence for his teammates? No. Be a factor during a football game? No. I'm running out of ideas. What is Haynesworth obligated to do for 100 Mil?
