Consider the irony if it turns out (down the road) that the current Keenan McCardell CUT the next Keenan McCardell...
The good thing is that the timing of this gives him the best shot at catching on somewhere else.

I think that if he was going to establish himself, it would've been last year. I'm not sure if the playbook was too complex, couldn't sell his routes vs starters, etc but they guy flashed in preseason but that's about it. If you remember a few years back, there was a White WR that was in camp for a few years and his stats were really good. But that guy couldn't stick on a roster either. Also - see Marcus Mason too. Even though he's on SD or Seattle right now. Lets see if he's on the final roster.

I don't think Zorn liked rooks. I think it's as simple as that.

Wow, I'm really surprised and unhappy about Marko Mitchell. I thought they had absolutely nothing to lose by keeping him, and he's a guy that was young and had no pressure to perform and could go out and push someone like Kelley... I know there's not much film on him, but what little there is showed he knew how to run a fade route without fighting his own body like Kelley...

Some people had to go, it's good that they get a chance to go somewhere else now.

It's surprising to me that Anthony Montgomery got cut. I figured he was on the bubble with a switch to a hybrid 3-4, but I would have guessed that he'd at least make it to and through training camp.
Too bad. But from all reports he never lived up to his talent. Pretty much every coach said that Montgomery had more talent but Golston worked harder. There is pretty much one reason why Golston is still here (re-signed in April!) and Montgomery is not: Work Ethic. Sorry, Anthony. You had plenty of chances.

Agreed. Also, I think Golston could be good at 3-4 end while Montgomery probably wouldn't be athletic enough to play nose.

I was hoping Haynesworth would come in and show Montgomery how a guy that size can work hard and dominate the guy across from him... uh, so much for that plan... Fat Albert isn't showing the young guys much of anything other than how to take it easy once you get paid...

I have no Earthly idea why they would sign 57 year old Joey Galloway and cut Mitchell. This is a move they will regret and even if they don't what is the point of cutting him now. At least give him a chance to compete!

If the team has no intention of using him, they just did him a favor... getting cut early will give him his best chance to get picked up by another team... He will play somewhere.

Yes, it is better for him, but unless he has has issues with the coaching staff, he showed enough promiss last year to warrant brining back. I mean they have two WR spots that are wide open, maybe 3 if you count Kelly as on the bubble.
Good move for him, bad move for the team.

How do you know it wasn't Montgomery's fault, due to his oft-cited poor work ethic? Where do you get evidence supporting your theory that Al isn't teaching people?

I was hoping Mitchell would make the team. Good luck to him.
As far as Montgomery goes. He had his opportunities for success here. It seems to me he just did not work hard enough. He has had plenty of time three years if I am correct. Just comes down to his work ethic.
Its just sucks when you make young men millionaires to do a certain job. Then some of these young men just choose to ride the pine so to speak. It has been a recurring theme with some of these Redskins no need to mention names.
In the past mediocrity might have been tolerated. So these cuts send a message to perform or hit the road jack! My only gripe I wish we might have given Mitchell more time to flourish.

I liked Mitchell too but I wonder if they didn't think they had too many WR projects on the team. I always felt like Zorn was straddled with way too many young WRs/TEs. This is a position that you need to have enough guys who know how to play and a guy or two learning...heck, we had more guys learning than doing. They must have seen enough of MM at the latest camp that proved to them, he needed too much help, either with patterns, knowledge of the position, speed, etc...we gotta trust this regime to know what they're doing. The last regime won 4 games..it can only be better.

be fair.
the last regime won 12 games (lost 20)

He was a 7th round pick who didn't play special teams - simple as that.

He had one catch last year during the regular season for four yards, being the 5th WR and not playing on any special teams units didn't help the lack of film issue, but who's fault is that. Being a 7th round pick almost mandates that they play on teams if he's a WR,CB.S,LB, or RB. I would have loved to have seen if he would work in Shanny's system but with 9 other guys fighting for half as many roster spots they saw that he wasn't going to fit. Like Kelly, Marko had trouble getting off the line of scrimmage.
Kelly might be next

I was pretty blown to hear Marko got cut, I wish him the best cause whoever picks him up will have a stud on offense. Have we seen enough to call him a great WR.. no.. do I believe he'll be one.. ABSOLUTELY!

That all makes sense, but why cut a young guy with some potential and keep a 39 year old Galloway, who has 20 catches COMBINED the last two seasons? Marko at least has the chance to develop into something, whereas Galloway has been done for years now.

I was going to say Kelly hasn't done jack but I have the same argument for him and Marko.. they just weren't given enough chances. I hope Kelly does something to stand out during the offseason cause it looks like Mike is serious about our WR corp.

I don't think he'll be here in September, either.

I agree. Just seems like it would have made more sense to give Mitchell a chance in camp instead of having Golloway, who as you pointed out likely wont make the team anyway.

Galloway is more likely an offseason 2nd coach and they gave Marko an opportunity to get on with another team instead of there being a flooded market post June 1 cuts. I think you're looking at it the wrong way.

If they had already decided that Mitchell wasn't going to make the team, it's better to give him a chance to catch on somewhere else. I don't know what went into the decision—you have to believe that a lack of special teams play hurt him—and it's possible that they are making a mistake. But if the decision
had already been made, regardless of whether it was the right decision or not, I think it's better to release Mitchell sooner rather than later.
