Report:
49ers begin to fill McCloughan's duties
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 18, 2010 1:46 PM ET
49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan's story has yet to be told.
What is clear after Wednesday night's stunning report from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that McCloughan could be on the outs is that changes are afoot in San Francisco. Immediately.
Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News writes that the team is making "short-term adjustments in front-office structure" in order to fill McCloughan's duties.
McCloughan's agent said his client would not be resigning. But Kawakami states what has quickly become apparent. McCloughan isn't likely to run San Francisco's draft either.
"It seems pretty clear that McCloughan is out or on his way out," Kawakami writes.
The 49ers have officially remained silent on the issue, but that has to change Thursday.
UPDATE: Here's a scary, speculative thought for 49ers fans: Jed York as football czar?
Rumor as it: this is a dispute about what to do with Alex Smith, and the money that'll be owed to him if he remains as the 9ers QB. The is thinking about drafting a QB in this years draft. The coach and GM have made moves this off-season to fill that need and don't want to use a draft pick to grab someone.
If York wants to turn into "the Danny", maybe they'll trade their 1st rd picks to move up. Dropping out of the top ten isn't what most fans want the Skins to do but we do need as many picks as we can get our hands on.

Considering this year has a lot of OTs slated to go early, I'm game for this.

With all the holes on this team and the FO saying they have a plan that will have competition at every position (that's the only part of the plan that they have let out), bodies will be needed. Free agency in a uncapped year means all of the available players (UFAs) will have 5-6 years in the league or 30+ yrs of age.
Allen mentioned FA, the Draft and trades as a means to getting this team up to speed for 2010 and beyond, so trades for RFAs should be coming soon (they'll trade players for players) and may add a few picks. Trading down is a good option when we have so many holds to fill. I can't see a QB in the first round, but trading down for more picks would go a long way to bring in fresh, young talent on the cheap.
The Seahawks have two #1s just like SF.....
NE has 3 #2s.....
KC has 3 picks in the first 51....
TB has two #2s
Then there are the have nots....
The Bears don't have have a pick until round 3...
Atlanta picks at 19 but no 2nd rounder...
Tenn picks 16th in round one then has to wait for the 3rd round
The Jags have a top 10 pick then they'll be playing cards with the Falcons, Bears and Titans unit the end of the 2nd....
This means there will be trade partners available when in other years this wouldn't be a option.

McCloughan on "extended leave of absence" for now
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 18, 2010 6:23 PM ET
In what likely amounts to a case of semantics, former 49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan is on an "extended leave of absence" from the team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
That absence is fully expected to be permanent, but the temporary status allows for the 49ers and McCloughan to work out the contractual issues at stake.
ESPN's report said the 49ers have been bracing for this to happen for days. Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, who first broke the story, expects Mike Singletary to take the lead in draft preparation.
The 49ers reportedly "have a plan to move forward" but their silence on McCloughan's departure is deafening.
If the organization really has a plan, it needs to acknowledge what has happened, what it still need to settle, and how it is going to move forward.
McCloughan takes in hoops game amidst upheavalPosted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 18, 2010 7:36 PM ET
The 49ers have now had 18 hours since news first came out that G.M. Scot McCloughan may be out, and the organization still hasn't figured out what to say publicly about it.
While the rest of the organization stalled, McCloughan spent part of the day taking in Murray State's bracket-busting win over Vanderbilt in San Jose.
"I know what I did for the organization and I'm really good with it," McCloughan wrote in a text to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
McCloughan is the subject of a lot of speculative chatter, and this latest nugget certainly doesn't answer any questions.

Trading #4 for SF's two first rounders could be sweet, we could get a quality Tackle and maybe Iupati at guard then Tebow at #37

It looks like a "personal reasons" situation. I doubt many more details will be leaked to the press, and I hope they aren't.
