The Redskins have signed free agent tight end Sean Ryan, the team announced on Thursday.
Ryan is a 6-year NFL veteran who has had stints with six NFL teams, most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Ryan adds more depth to the Redskins' tight ends, a unit that includes two-time Pro Bowler Chris

ey and youngster Fred Davis.
With Ryan on board, it appears the Redskins will not retain Todd Yoder, who is an unrestricted free agent.
Ryan has seen action in 53 career games, including 15 starts. He has totaled 26 receptions for 240 yards and two touchdowns in his career.
In 2009, Ryan appeared in 10 games, with eight starts, for the Chiefs. He caught 14 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
Ryan signed with the Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent on April 21, 2009, after spending parts of the 2008 season with the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins.
Ryan entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick (144th overall) by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2004 NFL Draft.
After appearing in nine games during two seasons in Dallas (2004-05), Ryan was traded to the New York Jets in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick on Aug. 31, 2006.
In two seasons in New York (2006-07), Ryan appeared in 26 games, with four starts, and caught nine passes for 90 yards.
Ryan played college football at Boston College, where he caught 75 passes for 950 yards and 12 touchdowns in four years.
Ryan is a native of Buffalo, N.Y.

Seems like he will be used as a blocking tight end? I like Yoder as he was the unassuming touchdown catcher, but we do need an upgrade on the blocking TE front.

I dont like this pick up. I dont see the need. Yoder wont get signed else ware so bring him back for cheep. And god I hope we dont get rid of

ey or Davis. That is just plain stupid.

If Yoder doesn't sign elsewhere then that may be a good sign that he isn't that valuable. I disagree that we shouldn't try and trade

ey. Davis filled in well and

ey is one of the few people that has trade value. If we can pick up a stud O-linemen or draft picks I don't see why we don't make the move. We can't hold onto players for sentimental reasons. It's more about the team than any specific player.

We dropped a FB less than a day ago, this is just upgrading the roster. The guy is a tough blocker who catches just few enough to get left alone on routes. ESPN didn't hype any of these three players but on the surface, they all have good potential. Feels like Shanahan is on his game so far.
With this logical FO, should we expect a LT in the Draft? Or will the Washington Drama continue with the drafting of a skill position at #1?

So we trade

ey (a proven leader and producer) for draft pick who very well can be a bust. and were left with Davis (could be a one hit wonder) and and unproven draft pick. NOT SMART.
And holding on to

ey isnt for sentimental reasons, its for holding onto one of the only consistent players on this team. And having

ey on this "team" only makes the team better.

The other thing to consider is that with no salary cap, there is little risk in signing a guy to a contract and then releasing him before the season. Might be that guys get brought in for camp competition. Doesn't necessarily mean Yoder is gone...
Same with Keamaotu (sp?) If he comes to camp and isn't fully recovered, the Skins don't lose anything by cutting him.

I don't like this move, the TE position is the least of our worries; focus on more pressing issues please. Unless of course this guy is not here to play TE.

I hope he is a good blocker, but it's hard to believe a good blocker would be on 6 different teams in 6 years...

You guys need to settle down. It is actually possible for the team to sign a backup TE while still managing to focus on "more pressing issues". Why get your panties all bunched up about something so trivial?

No way parting with the

ster.... He is need for this WCO.

All I am saying is that

ey represents trade value that we can use to try and address other issues on our team. Why not take a chance counting on Davis to deliver? And does Shanny run the WCO? I thought he was going to tailor his offense to his personnel. I remember him using a lot of PA-roll out passes with plumber. I just see davis as a guy that has a lot of potential and was showing it last year when

ey was hurt. Get trade value for

ey while we can and thank him for his services.

What are you expecting to get out of

ey for a Trade?
And like i said before why give up something so proven for a "chance". This isnt craps its NFL football.
And both Mike and Kyle Shannan use 2 TE sets, gives a lot of options for the offense. why hurt one aspect of the game to help the other? Keep

ey and Davis and address the "other issues on or team" in other ways. FA and Draft. Make a well rounded team not a "chance" or wish.

I just can't find it in my heart to get excited (either up or down) about this move. For heaven's sake people - we're talking about a back-up tight end! I doubt very much that this makes it any more or less likely that

ey or Davis will be traded. There's a whole roster that needs reworking here, and whilst we probably all agree that tight end was not at the top of OUR priority list, Shanahan has surely seen an opportunity to sign up somebody who might be a good fit for what he wants to do on offence.
This move doesn't prevent the Redskins from doing all those other things that we want them to do - just chill!

It's a preferred offseason activity for some around here.

Oh my God, you're right! Now we won't be addressing our severe OL issues, we won't have a running back other the CP who's aging & getting more injury prone. We won't address whether our young WR's are ready for prime time or not. We won't address our quarterback issue for this year or get a youngster to groom. We won't have our backfield set. And on D we have 4-3 players trying to do a new 3-4 D. And we won't be able to accomplish any of that because we signed a blocking TE for depth!
Damn you Dan Snyder, this is you! Admit it! Do you always have to crush our hope with this micromanagement? Of all the needs we had, you pick a blocking TE for depth!
Hmmm....will anyone pick up on any sarcasm in this one?

It's more a house-cleaning move and scarcely deserves a thread. Please don't tell me it's evidence of Shanahan being on his game. Ridiculous.

ey's by far the best offensive player we have. Sure, trade him. What the heck. Brilliant. Davis caught eighty percent of the passes that hit him in the numbers-- he's ready to take over.

ey is a reliable player, but not really game changing. He can catch the ball and get a first, but Davis can catch it and run it in. I like

ey, but why not try and get something for him.

Seriously. We sign a backup/blocking TE, something almost every team needs and somehow people start talking about trading

ey?

This is backward. You don't trade players because you can get something for them. The question is why WOULD we try to "get something" for him? The question is not why wouldn't we. But to answer your question, we wouldn't because he's a good player and we can get something for him because of that, which is why we also would want to keep him. Also, don't we want players like

ey who are good, liked by the fans and actually want to be here? What does it say when we take those players and "try" to "get something" for them because we can?

The only reason we have players is to see who's good so we can try to get something for them. Isn't that obvious?
