High Profile Cuts Likely Today

Redskins are likely to make high-profile roster cuts
With an uncapped season in 2010, the Redskins are expected to cut many high-profile players with big contracts because, well, there are no cap ramifications. We decided to take a look at the most likely candidates to be released later today before the Redskins, minutes after midnight tonight, begin what many league observers believe will be an aggressive push in free agency under Coach Mike Shanahan.
Rock Cartwright: Age: 30; POS: RB/KR; 2009 base salary: $945,000; 2010 base salary: $1.5 million.
The overachieving Cartwright has stuck in the NFL for eight seasons (all with the Redskins) because of his heart. A team captain, Cartwright has been a special-teams standout, but his role last season was reduced on kickoff returns. Some members of the former coaching staff would have preferred to list Cartwright as inactive in most games.
Antwaan Randle El: Age: 30; POS: WR/PR; 2009 base salary: $1.5 million; 2010 base salary: $1.375 million.
It seems this move could not come fast enough for many Redskins fans. Although it wasn't all his fault, Randle El was among the league's least productive full-time punt returners last season. Demoted to the slot receiver position, Randle El failed to have at least one touchdown reception for the first time in his eight-year career.
Fred Smoot: Age: 30; POS: DB; 2009 base salary: $2.65 million; 2010 base salary: $3.9 million.
Smoot still talks a good game. As for his coverage skills, well, he wasn't as impressive on that front. The Redskins are expected to begin a makeover of their secondary, and Smoot just doesn't seem to fit with what could be a new-look bunch for 2010. And with Smoot due a base of almost $4 million - that's not going to happen here.
Randy Thomas: Age: 34; POS: G; 2009 base salary: $1.6 million; 2010 base salary: $3.7 million.
Thomas was a key to the Redskins' productive running game during Joe Gibbs' second stint. Once considered particularly agile for a 300-pounder, Thomas excelled at pulling on the team's bread-and-butter stretch plays. But Thomas has played in more than three games only once in the past three seasons because of major injuries.
Cornelius Griffin: Age 33; POS: DT; 2009 base salary: $1.334 million; 2010 base salary: $855,000.
Griffin was the Redskins' most talented interior lineman until Albert Haynesworth joined the team. He regularly drew the most double teams from opponents, which helped others make plays. Griffin would seem to be best suited to play nose tackle in the Redskins' new 3-4 scheme, but there could be a logjam at the position.
Andre Carter: Age: 30; POS: DE; 2009 base salary: $1.5 million; 2010 base salary: $1.3 million.
With 11 sacks, Carter is coming off his best season with the Redskins and the second best of his career. But the Redskins are switching to a 3-4 base front and Carter has said he was miserable as a linebacker in his one season in the role in San Francisco. And if the Redskins land a big-name free-agent pass rusher, Carter might be moving on.

I'm definitely investigating the last one listed.

Andre Carter would surprise me. He's a physical specimen, and when he's playing in the right system he can cause some terror. The rest
need to be cut, IMO, and they would be the bare minimum of who has to go. Throw on top of that Rogers and Landry. (Maybe even Portis or Betts. There, I said it.

I'd like Smoot back if he took a big pay cut. But for 4 mil no way.
The other I'd like is Griffin. This gives just base, which is pretty reasonable. He's one though who I believe has cap we could shed in an uncapped year and I don't know how much exactly. To me it would come down to that.

I think I would keep Griffin around for another year and try to trade Carter....There is no reason to cut a uy in the prime of his carrer who just registered 11 sacks...... If you want him gone, trade him and at least get something

I'd cut Portis and Betts. They can't stay on the field.

Griffin is rarely healthy/100% anymore and his play shows it. I say thxx for your contributions, but ya gotta go, bro.

I understand what ur saying but he is only making 855,000 base this yr....if we switch to 3-4 I feel like he wont be on the field as much as in the past, maybe keeping him healthy more? I say keep him this yr, peace out next....just my opinion though

I'd keep Carter and Griffin and say "buh-bye" to the rest of them. Sorry Rock

The additional consideration is that while his base is 855K, he's one of the guys who kept renegotiating his salary for cap space and he has cap carry over from prior years. The problem I have is I don't know how much. But say it was a big number, like 20 million and we could dump that since it's an uncapped year. If that were the case, we should totally cut him. But if not I'm with you, 855K you keep him

Redskins to release Randy Thomas, Randle El
Randy Thomas and Antwaan Randle El are among the Redskins who are being released today, according to a league source.
Thomas, 34, held down the starting right guard job since joining the team as a free agent in 2003, but he appeared in only two games in 2009 before a triceps tear ended his season early.
He earned $1.6 million in 2009 but was due $3.7 million in 2010, a high price that made it tough for the Redskins to retain him.
With Thomas' departure and Chris Samuels' retirement, also announced Thursday, the Redskins have now lost two starting offensive linemen who they've relied on the past several years.
Thomas was present at Redskins Park today and attended Samuels' retirement press conference. Coming from the Jets, Thomas was a considered a crucial cog to the Redskins' productive running game during Joe Gibbs' second stint. Once considered particularly agile for a 300-pounder, Thomas excelled at pulling on the team's bread-and-butter stretch plays. But Thomas has played in more than three games only once in the past three seasons because of major injuries.

I'd like to see Carlos Rogers added to this list - I know it won't be but I wish.

Wow....ARE is the one I am happiest with. Maybe we can average more than 6 yards a return now...

Three running backs cut... I guess I'm surprised that CP wasn't one of them.

Me too!. Kind of upset. Hopefully he hears all that though and has a monster year. He's got something to prove to me

I'm not an authority on this but I thought that Shanahan (& Allen) had given every indication that Portis was going to be here and will be given every opportunity to play - why would we then go and cut him?
why is anyone surprised at some of these cuts - we have to make a lot of changes here and the new guys are running things - this is not the same old franchise and there are going to be a lot of changes here in how we do things
it's already different in that we're not tracking Redskins 1 flight plan
the only thing the same around here is that some just continue to need to start a new thread when there's already one in place

I'm kinda scratching my head here SkinsJock b/c in another thread, you said that this front office is doing what they should. Trimming the fat of over inflated contracts and one of the biggest is CP. His health/production doesn't justify what he's paid at this point in his career. Too bad we probably can't get anything for him b/c of that contract.
The only two guys I'm kind of bummed to see go is ARE and Rock. ARE, only b/c he's such a good guy and Rock b/c I actually think he's a decent RB and great ST's contributor but I think his pay made him expendable. Hope both get opportunities elsewhere. I'm sure they will though.

I'm not as down on Portis as some Frank - I think that a lot of what happened with him was because of how the team was managed and little to no accountability
I think that things are going to be very different here and Shanahan has communicated to Portis that he wants him but he also wants Portis to be a lot more committed - I agree that this is a lot of money, BUT Portis is a hell of a blocking back - I think that some arrangement about the money that Portis is going to get, will be made. I'm not really good about that but I think that something will be done because it is a lot of money
Portis is this franchise's best RB as long as he is given a little better O line AND he's committed to being a better team guy

btw - a bunch of Portis contract is guaranteed anyway - I think 6 of the 7+ mill

- if we had cut him, even with the no cap deal in place now, we still would have had to give him a lot of money
there's more to this particular situation than just cutting fat in an uncapped year
Posted: Fri Mar 05, 2010 9:55 am

I don't think the guaranteed money is a big deal. He's renegotiated his contract so many times that this money is just money we've already owed him. I think that Dan might have said that everyone is game but CP. He must be given a chance. I could/would like to see us part ways but I don't think we will until we get someone in here b/c we cut everyone else this past week.

While I agree that the money is not everything it is a lot of money - I doubt that the stupid owner has any say about what is happening here
I think that Snyder is very supportive and possibly "a part of things" but all indications are that Allen and Shanahan are making the decisions

There really are no indications except that we didn't sign Peppers but I'm not sure if Vinny/Danny were running the show if he would be here anyways. I mean this guys wants ridiculous money that he can't back up with his production recently.
More than anything, this is the season to clean the slate. Get those big contracts off the books. You're going to have to play CP anyways but you've got a locker room cancer and injury prone RB on your roster. Take the hit and get younger/cheaper/more reliable.
