Well here we go again...or maybe not (Peppers/Sproles)

Hey everyone I dont know if you noticed but Redskins season officially starts this Friday at midnight and the rumors are already out there. Its hard not to see these things and think "here we go again" but, I dont think Shanahan and Allen are in the PR business to make us happy, they are in the winning business and probably intend to use every Snyder cent to do what they can to win. I would love to have Sproles I think we need him more then any other FA and I guess having Orakpo and Peppers on opposite sides would be kind of baller but I think Peppers is over the hill especially for the money he wants. Anyways what do you guy think is this more of the same or just a new regime saying "Eff it, no salary cap, an owner who dosnt care about money, why not take a look at these guys?!" And say what you want about pft.com but I have noticed over the last two years and since they were bought, they have had the jump on A LOT of stuff. I would expect us to have one of these two guys buy Friday morning.

Yeah I was wondering about this too. If the deal is that we get can a bunch of quality FAs like Sproles and Peppers because Snyder has the money, and with the uncapped year it won't hurt us in the future, then this stuff is ok with me.

Is that the case?

I'd rather have Sproles than Peppers. Lot more life left barring injury.

I seriously doubt that Peppers is actually on the 'skins radar. There's just not enough upside.

Sproles brings much to the table... but, I can't see him as an everydown player... especially at what it will cost.

Can Peppers play DE in a 3-4? Is he big enough....If we can sign him something like 5/40 with a bunch of guarenteed it might be alright...

If he could play DE then we would only be a big NT away from looking pretty good....and that might be Haynesworth's job anyway with Daniels filling the other DE position....

The only thing that concerns me is spending on this money on defense... our offense has been pittiful the last few yrs, maybe we should spread out the cash.

I do think Sproles could be good, but he is not a feature back so paying him like one would just add to our great reputation around the NFL

First off, Peppers want's Haynesworth type money. He thinks he's that much impact. He's also not in any way a 3/4 defensive end. I follow the Panthers pretty closely and this guy, I feel, screwed them. I don't want a guy like that on our team - at all.

Sproils is a very good RB but he wants to be a starter. He doesn't have the size to be a starter in the NFL. And, he's going to generate a larger contract b/c of his ST ability.

I'm with you on Peppers - don't want him at all. Looks like a guy who will be fat and happy with a big contract and give you 2 sacks like he did a couple of years ago. Signing Peppers would send a huge signal that nothing has changed in Washington.

By Sproles do you mean the San Diego running back? If so, he is not an every down back and would be a waste of time and money.

If there's no salary cap, who cares how much money Snyder wants to give Peppers? It's not like giving Peppers more money means he would give less to an O-lineman or any other position of need.

Think of the salary cap-free signing this way: if you could have signed Peppers to the league minimum last year, would you do it? Of course.

I think the money is not the issue. For me, the decision hedges on what it brings for the team long term. If you sign Peppers now, is it going to hinder development of a young player?

(and BTW, Peppers wants to play OLB in a 3-4, not a DE).

Money is the issue. If you sign him to a reasonable deal, he'll be bitching and moaning because he isn't happy no one would give him the money he thinks he's worth, and he'll keep it up until you give it to him. If you give him the huge money, then the other guys in the locker room are looking at their contracts in comparison, and you've got an uphappy locker room. Don't think for one second that the size of a contract only impacts the salary cap. Most of the guys in that locker room are paying very close attention to how much the other guys are paid in relation to themselves. If we give Peppers 10 million and he's getting a couple of sacks a year, how long until Orakpo is unhappy with his contract?

Peppers wants to play LB in a 3-4 and might sign with us for that reason. As long as he doesn't keep from flowing to the new OL we need, it's ok with me.
However, I still don't see a good front three. Don't mention Daniels to me. Also, which of our LB would Peppers replace-- Carter, Orakpo, Fletcher, Rocky.
I simply still don't see the possibity of a good 3-4 being created out of what we have, even with Peppers. Orakpo, Carter, Al, Fletcher, Rocky, Peppers add up to only six solid defenders and all three of the defensive ends are too small to play on the line in a 3-4. Idea. Sign Pepper and stay in the 4-3.

Carter ALEXANDER OR FA Haynesworth Orakpo

ROCKY FLETCHER PEPPERS

CH... you note that Peppers wants to play LB in a 3-4, then at the bottom, line him up a a LB in a 4-3. Sorry... I sure don't see him there in a 4-3...

Peppers is pretty much the prototypical 4-3 LE, which has been a gaping hole on the Skins roster since at least 2004. He's big enough to hold up at 3-4 DE in all likelihood. The question--and this has always been the question about Peppers--is whether he'll want to. Some team's going to bet $100M that they can get him to want to play up to his talent level. I just hope it's not the Skins.

Just for the record, Peppers has made it well known that he wants to play OLB in a 3-4 and he's only looking to sign with a team that lets him play there.

You should assume for this discussion that if we sign him it's to play OLB in a 3-4. If we don't want that, then he's not going to sign here, so all the other discussion is moot.

I think it's funny. People were tired of Cerrato's lame decisions, tired of not having a decent Head Coach. The owner goes out and picks up a true GM and everyone is estatic. The owner and the GM pick up a qualified HC in Shanahan. Now we are going to question every move just as bad or if not worse then if Cerrato was still here. Obviously faith is no more.

But it was said before we picked up Shanahan that he was restrained while in Denver, the owner would not spend on any players Shanahan wanted. So now that he's working for an owner that does spend... did any of you expect anything less? I'm just happy knowing he'll know the best way to utilize the talent vs. Zorn, and Gibbs. I am worried about Haslett though. I hope he proves me wrong.

I have a great idea. Since Snyder has the money, we should restructure all of our current high priced contracts so that they are front-loaded for next year. If we could pay most of the $$$ in the contract this year, with no cap, our cap values in the following years will be extremely low, leaving room to sign more big names to regular contracts. This will clear out the salary cap doom we are currently in. Thoughts?

there are rules against front loading contract in the uncapped year

I think Mike Bell was released from the Saints. Any thoughts that Shannahan would bring him back into his system?

The reason Peppers wants to play 3/4 OLB is because as an rush LB his value goes up and he can demand coin similar to guys like Demarcus Ware. I don't think he is worth signing he's 30 and giving him a mega deal just sets franchise back a couple years. Sproles would be an even bigger mistake way too small to deserve the money he is asking for. If we want a special teams demon we can try a guy like Marcus Mason he is pretty fast and cheap.

I'm not saying he is Darren Sproles I am just saying that if we really need a punt/kick returner with some adequate speed Mason is servicable why pay a guy starting money to be a third down back/special teams guy :?:

Are you proposing we sign them for one year? Most players want multi-year deals and while this year's salary won't "hurt" us with the cap future year salaries would.
