Redskins make an offer to Daniels

With Washington preparing to make a major shift to a 3-4 defense, the team wants to bring back veteran defensive lineman Phillip Daniels, two people familiar with the situation said Sunday.

The Redskins have extended a contract offer to the 14-year veteran, who could become an unrestricted free agent Friday. Daniels's representative is expected to resume negotiations with the team early this week. The Redskins also are in contract talks with the agent for center Casey Rabach, who could test the market as an unrestricted free agent Friday if the sides fail to reach an agreement.

Daniels played in every game last season, starting 15, despite being slowed for much of the season by of a torn right biceps. According to NFL.com, Daniels was credited with 35 tackles, including 24 unassisted, and one sack. Tackles are not an official statistic.

Daniels, who turns 37 on Thursday, suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament on the first day of training camp in 2008. Last season, Daniels was named the winner of the Redskins' Ed Block Courage Award, presented to a player from each team who displays courage amid adversity. The award, named for longtime Baltimore Colts trainer Ed Block, was first presented in 1978.

If he can still play, he'd be a good 3-4 end. Makes sense.

He'll be medicre at best. He's been mediocre for a few years now and can't be expected to be better now.

As long as he's expected to fill gaps and not be quick. Last year, that's what I saw in him...gap filler, no quickness.

I think he's better suited to 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT than 4-3 DE given his size, strength & (lack of) quickness.

Indeed, we must be desperate or ... it is just a stop gap move until someone better is picked up before the regular season.

He is a perfect candidate for another injury next season. People should know when it is time to retire with dignity.

personally i think he's big enough and can take on 2 blockers well enough to play NT in a 3-4
