who is the biggest first round flop in redskins history? Anyone have a Tom Carter sighting in the past few years? I know Shuler is a real estate whiz...or is it insurance? My vote goes for Westbrook...the guy could get hurt ripping a fart..how did Stephen Davis let westbrook beat him up like ralphie beat farkas in a christmas story?

anybody have footage of that beatdown?

1994: Heath Shuler... 'Nuff said.

I think that holdout did Heath Bar in. Him not panning out put us in the crapper for quite a while. In fact, I think we still have brown doo doo on our faces....lets hope Joe can wipe it off

Shuler. Absolutely. I had such high hopes for the Vol...but alas, he was really really bad.

1. Desmond Howard, because we gave up two first rounders to trade up for him. One of the very few mistakes that Joe Gibbs ever had a part in...assuming that Gibbs had to agree, even if it might have been Casserly's idea...

2. Heath Shuler. Oh, my!

3. Gary Beban. (Who? As Csey Stengel almost said, you gotta look him up.). Summary: Heisman Trophy winning qb from UCLA, last great project of Otto Graham. Lombardi took over the team, looked at Beban, and made him a punt returner. My memory is rusty, but I think the Redskins traded a few picks to get the chance to sign him after the Rams had drafted him...so I'll count him as a Redskins first rounder. In fact, and I'm feeling too lazy to check this, I think Otto traded two future first rounders for the rights to Beban...traded them to George Allen, who took over the Redskins the year they finally got a first round pick. And Allen traded that pick plus a half dozen others for Diron Talbert, Richie Petibon, Jack Pardee, Myron Pottios, another LB who retired to become a defensive coach, and an OG named John Wilbur. Like making Di-rone your first round pick. Not bad.

4. Pat Richter. Fine possession reciever in college, thought to be almost as good as Gary Collins of Maryland (later star of Browns). Richter wound up as the Redskins punter for a few seasons, watching Jerry Smith play tight end.

5. Lightning Leroy Jackson. Fastest man in football, but slippery hands. Could not catch a pass, which was a serious defect in a wide receiver.

sean taylor..... sorry im very pessimistic towards the draft ive seen alot of "sure thing" safeties and defensive backs be some of the worst picks in draft history ... ugh o well

Gotta agree with Jake here. Without a doubt it's Andre Johnson. How do you draft a guy and he never suit up for you or play a down. At least Shuler and Howard played for us. Johnson could never get on the field.

does anyone remember the the name of the running back that we drafted from Notre Dame? i think he was a major flop...he was suppose to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and never played at all for us. like u said...at least shuler,westbrook, and howard all did at least play.

I agree with Johnson being the worst also if I remember right the Skin's traded a future pick to get Him.

Gotta say Shuler. Every time Espn talks about the Biggest Flops, He is on the list; He was 10th last time.

Along the lines of poor picks, it's also more painful to consider who was drafted right or shortly AFTER that pick. In 2000 the Browns drafted Courtney Brown, leaving Arrington and Samuels to go 2 and 3 to the Skins. 5th pick Jamal Lewis, 6th pick Corey Simon, 9th pick Brian Urlacher, 18th pick Chad Pennington, 19th pick Shaun Alexander. Arrington and Samuels still look like pretty good picks five years later, even considering those stars. But the Bengals drafted Peter Warrick 4th and the Giants drafted Ron Dayne 11th. Every team has that kind of season in the draft, but they sting. I'm not sure how many seasons the Redskins had draft that felt like that.

1992 - #4 Desmond Howard (Skins), but then again that was the year of Steve Emtman, Sean Gilbert and David Klingler.

1994 - #3 Shuler (Skins)...#4 Willie McGinest, #12 Aaron Glenn, #31 Tre Johnson (Skins), #33 Isaac Bruce, #42 Charlie Garner, #46 Larry Allen.

1995 - #4 Westbrook (but then again, Ki-Jana went #1), #8 Joey Galloway, #12 Warren Sapp, #16 Hugh Douglas, #23 Ty Law

1996 - #30 Andre Johnson (Skins), #34 Amani Toomer, #35 Mike Alstott, #36 Lawyer Milloy, #43 Mushin Muhammed, #61 Brian Dawkins

1997 - #17 Kenard Lang (Skins), #36 Tiki Barber, #42 Jake Plummer, #43 Corey Dillon, #44 Sam Madison.

1998 - #48 Stephen Alexander (Skins), #69 Skip Hicks (Skins), #72 Jeremiah Trotter, #76 Ahman Green, #92 Hines Ward

1999 - Champ Bailey, nice pick, especially since Tim Couch and Akili Smith were drafted before him. But with pick #107 the Skins took the famous Nate Stimson, forcing Denver to settle for Olandis Gary 20 picks later, and Aaron Brooks went four picks after that.

** 1990 was a funny year. The Skins were lucky enough to get Brian Mitchell with the 130th pick. But not until they were sure to draft Andre Collins with #46, Mo Elewonibi with #76, Cary Conklin with #86 and Rico Labbe with #109. (Rico Labbe???)

** 1986 was a pretty good draft. Marcus Koch #30, Walter Murray (??) #45, Alvin Walton #75, Ravin Caldwell #113, Mark Rypien #146, Kurt Gouveia #213

*** 1985 saw three high picks that later became Redskins. #1 Bruce Smith (Bills), #12 Jim Lachey (Chargers) and #15 Ethan Horton (Chiefs). Some guy named Jerry Rice went 16th. Maybe I should post this is in a Chiefs forum. Ouch.

*** 1983 Darrell Green at #28 (Dan Marino was #27), Richard Williams (who?) #56, and Charles Mann #84.

*** 1981 Can't complain: Mark May #20 (unless you wanted Chris Collinsworth at #37 or Mike Singletary at #38). Russ Grimm #69, Dexter Manley #119, Charlie Brown #201, Darryl Grant #231, Clint Didier #314. However, the Redskins took two famous Quarterbacks that year Tom Flick #90 and Phil Kessel #257.

*** 1980 Art Monk at #18. With the possible exception of Anthony Munoz who went #3, probably the best player drafted in the first round was Monk. Unless you're a huge Billy Sims fan. That kind of draft allows for some that may be sub-par.

I guess you never know with the draft...but I DO know that I have way too much spare time...

I didn't have all that info locked away in my melon. I knew a little of it, and then just started looking at earlier drafts while I composed the post. I realized that it started to look like I was bashing the Skins' drafts. There have been some wacky ones, but really (as everyone here already knows) they've pulled some real gems in later rounds. Especially during Bobby Beathard's tenure.

Frankly, the draft always scares me. There is a Clinton Portis and a Brett Favre in the second round for every Steve Emtman and Akili Smith taken in the top 5. Even Mel Kiper doesn't see the future with crystal clarity. I love the thought of Sean Taylor here, but with the above said, maybe I'm talking myself into more picks being a good idea.

But, I admit that I like Patrick Ramsey being picked at spot directly between the spots used to pick Dan Marino and Brett Favre.
