Definitive news on Jason Campbell, Okung and other tidbits

Adam SchefterESPN Insider, Adam Schefter reported this morning on the Mike and Mike show that Jason Campbell will remain with the Washington Redskins for the 2010 season. Word of advice for Redskin fans Schefter was Shanahan’s guy when he worked with the Denver Post and covered the Broncos so this is pretty solid info. Schefter went on to say that the Redskins will still draft a QB within the first two rounds which means they are not entirely set to draft a QB at the 4 spot. This will be great news for the Redskins fans that want offensive linemen to be the focus of the draft. I believe it means that the Redskins are keeping their options open. That is a good thing.

Russell OkungChief’s House Writer, Scuba said in response to my article on the Redskins draft and I quote “I agree with you about the number of picks. However, having Shanahan in the AFC west for a number of years I have learned one thing: Shanahan likes his quarterbacks. If Shanahan has a chance, I think he will pull the trigger on Bradford, and maybe that might not be until later in the draft. Personally I hope you take him with the 4th pick so the Chiefs can take Okung”

I figured Okung would not last very long if the Redskins did not take him. Many scouts believe based on the Senior Bowl practices and workouts that Jimmy Clausen might be a step or two ahead of Sam Bradford. I was speaking to a Vikings writer yesterday afternoon that believes should the Vikings fail to get McNabb they could make an offer for Campbell as they think really highly of him and the numbers he put up despite the state of the Redskins organization. Just goes to show that things are a lot different outside of the Redskin bubble. Jason Campbell is a restricted free agent so the Redskins will tender him an offer. If another team wants him the Redskins have the right to match or to receive draft picks as compensation.

I think a lot of this is positioning.

alot of positive news, though nothing has happened yet. Would hate to see Campbell go but if we were to get a decent couple of picks we could get younger at need positions faster. Probably would end up with better picks next year if Campbell isn't behind a better O-line. That's if you think he's not the answer, anyway.

I think that it's better for his career to go to a team that's only a step away. Minn. would be a good place for him to go based off of that he's just coming out of the WCO and showed progress every year.

We're going to be bad next year. And I think the best thing we can do is get a Vet in here who can take some hits and buy some time until we get a rookie ready.

That's interesting stuff about the Vikings. I could see JC being a solid option for them. Wouldn't be a terrible move if we could trade him for a second or third round pick.

Who knows if this is really true or not about JC staying in DC, but it makes sense. Get a top tier OLman with the first pick, hopefully grab a better than average QB with #2 and let Shanahan groom him behind JC for a year. That just sounds reasonable and smart. That's the kind of stuff I want to hear coming from the Redksins!

What if.. WHAT IF!!!.. JC does like Kurt Warner did with Matt Leinert and actually takes us to a big game like the NFC Champ. or even SB??? Wow, that'll mess with everyone's heads!

That's a little hard to believe, given that neither Bradford nor Clausen are at the senior bowl.

That's what I was thinking. Not to mention that both guys are injured too. Bradford with the shoulder and Claussen with the toe injury. I'm sure neither guy will do much at the Scouting Combine. I think both will be healing as well.

Eh, JC IS a vet that can take some hits...

If we can get the Vikings 2nd round pick then we should do that - otherwise, keep him while we rebuild the line - it's not good for him but this is the best move for the franchise - I'd even trade him plus our #4 to San Francisco for one of their 1st round picks and their second round pick - we need to find a lot of good young players to develop here

it also is not a given that there will be any football in 2011 which only helps give us more time to get offensive lineman in place for a good QB to play behind

If you can swing that, you should be our GM :!:

That's a very poor trade. The value chart shows that our #4 for their two first round picks is only 300 pts apart. I think if I remember, that works out to like a 5th round pick. I think you're devaluing the #4 pick. It would be more likely that we were to trade the #4 and our 5th round pick for both of SF's 1st round picks. If we did that, then I'd pick up one of the other tackles and the guard Iupiu (sp) from Vandy. Then you've got two really good players who are young and a lot cheaper than a top 5 LT. I'd use the tackle pick on the right and address the LT position in FA. The remainder of the draft would be CB in the 2nd, QB in the 4th (think we may have lost this for the J Taylor trade - can't remember) and then pick up some younger developmental lineman that have the size and talent but maybe not the experience to use as backups.

According to hogshaven, it's our 6th that is gone for JT so we have 1, 2, 4, 5, 7.

Why would they back themselves into a corner by saying they WILL take a qb in the first two rounds? What if they don't take one in the first and the ones in the second are crap. Drafting a qb is a waste of time unless you REALLY think they could be a Franchise qb. If JC isn't good enough, and he was in the top half statistically behind the worst line in the league, than you probably want somebody pretty darn good. You don't just draft Colt McCoy for S&G's in the second round when you could take an actual NFL player.

I realize qb is an important position, but when you have a line that's 32nd, Rb's in the lower 20's, Wr's in the 20's and a QB thats FIFTEENTH in the league, than you don't HAVE to take a qb in the first two rounds. This is why I sometimes find myself defending Campbell even though I don't think he's great. I think it's better to build an actual team, and then find a qb to take advantage. Like the Vikes with Favre.

Why are panties getting bunched up over rumors and conjecture? Let's just let it play out, we'll find out soon enough.

 well actually - if some fans are getting their knickers in a twist now, it will be a lot of fun to see what happens here in February and March

Positive developments. With Vinny here I don't think JC stood a chance of staying. With Shanahan calling the shots (IF he is), we might do the rational thing after all.

I agree with brad that the talk of drafting a QB in the first couple of rounds is strange. Hopefully that's the positioning part, and the rest was what we plan on doing.

Why do you think that the talk of drafting a QB in the first couple of rounds is strange? JC certainly hasn't yet shown franchise potential and I think that it makes a lot of sense for Shanahan to draft a QB on Day 1 of the draft that he can develop and mold.

There's not a lot to my reasons for saying that. Essentially, I don't think we should pick a QB in the first few rounds until there is a decent line he can play behind. I agree that JC is not a franchise player. But he will definitely be serviceable (IMO) for another year or two while we build up the team, starting with the line. It's not a question of accurate judgment of JC, in my mind; it's just a matter of priorities.

Well I said its insane to think they HAVE to take a qb in the first two rounds, because that kind of backs you into a corner, especially when you have a qb in the top 15 statistically, an O-line that is one of the worst of all time, and RB/WR positions being in the 20's somewhere when compared with the rest of the league. If it turns out they like Clausen or somebody then fine, but to say you WILL draft a qb in the first two rounds NO MATTER WHAT is pretty dumb. You just don't draft a position because you think you need it.

I would love to have that problem, but it will never happen! It's Jason Campbell we're talking about not Kurt Warner or Drew Breez.

I do't know why the Viking would be interested in him! If Favre doesn't come back, JC isn't an upgrade over Sage or T Jackson.

I agree with you about that but JC has more experience so the vikes could see him as a game manager with the running game that they have however Shanahan , Allen and Snyder would be best served to resign Campbell to a one or two year deal and have him compete for the job with the rookie they are most likely going to bring in . Campbell is a ok veteran who the skins need because there is no one else remotely better in free agency out there and they don’t want to throw a rookie into the fire especially in the NFC East where every team they face has a pass rush specialist (poor kid would be the next Joey Harrington or David Carr ). Campbell would be a guy to start the season ala Jake Plummer and when the team is out of playoff contention you put in the young guy ala Jay Cutler and prepare him for next season. Campbell needs the skins because he would not get a great deal anywhere else and here at least he would be familiar with the receiving corps.
