Danny Smith Appears to be Staying

Danny Smith's position as special teams coach seems secure. Though there were rumors the Redskins would pursue former Buffalo assistant Bobby April, that is not happening. April will not interview, and NFL.com reports the Redskins have refused other teams permission to talk to Smith about interviewing elsewhere.

Not sure that I understand this decision. Our KR and PR coverage has been good, but we have done nothing on KR and PR. In 2009 we were 24th in KR avg. and 30th in PR avg. I'm not sure how you can retain someone that is responsible for continually putting ARE back there to return punts. That decision alone should be enough to get someone fired.

Unless he was not responsible for that decision.

You also have to think that last year the new rule was put in without a wedge.
Personally, I like Danny Smith. He's a firecracker and I think that would be a good thing to keep on staff. Also, there are several teams out there looking for ST's coord. like the Steelers and there are no real good replacements available.

Crap!
I was hoping he was going to go. Our ST have been average at best, below average if you ask me.
So much for the BS that Shanny said about building the best coaching staff possible.
Of course this isn't as bad a hire as the one we made at D coordinator.

I think we have some good ST's players but we really need someone who can run it back. On punts obviously we have to get someone in there for ARE who loves this horizontal running thing. On kickoffs Rock did 'ok' but he isn't a gamebreaker.. not like there's plenty of them out there though.. Devin Hester, Darren Sproles, and Joshua Cribbs being the best. (Leon Washington is up there too but he was injured and out this season) When Smith stopped Zorn from calling that timeout a while back I was really impressed that he took the initiative to say something being though he was just a ST's coach. Plus like Frank said the dude is a firecracker and let's face it, from what we are as Redskins, we definitely need that around.
I still want April but it's all good, not like a bunch of good coaches out there anyways.

I guess it's possible, but I have a hard time believing that the ST coach played no role in determining who the starting punter returner was.

I'm thinking Dan Snyder watched tape with Danny on the day after the game and then showed him his contract and said, "ARE returns punts. This contract says you have to listen to me. Nah-nee-nah-nee-boo-boo."

You mean ARE "fair catches?" not sure I saw him return one once.
Anyways I think the only reason we were considering getting rid of Danny Smith is because Snyder figured out who was stealing all of his Big League Chew.

And if that is true (I know you were making a joke) Danny should be gone. Then the next ST coach's contract should have one contract line that says, " Do your job well or your fired"
I don't care what the reason was. Danny kept putting ARE back ther to return punts. Also, my friend that live in this area and is a P-burge fan said very early on after ARE left the steel city, that the Steelers' coaching staff wouldn't have put up with all of the east-west running are did and they would have benched him.

To tell you the truth, I really don't blame him for being average to below average. The death of this team for the last ten years is NO depth. Guess who starts on Special Teams? Depth. Give him some better players, and then let's see what happens.

I vaguely remember ARE getting demoted/re-instated all within the same week. Hall and Moss was named as new choices...but when pressed specifically by the media, played coy and collaborated that they all split time anyway and nothing had changed. I think a certain somebody either went to coach or the owner after this went public and things got nasty...
Either way, I think BLC (lik'n the nick) had absolutely no say in what happened and just kept on chewing through the madness...

Well. he certainly is that... but have you noticed the Shanahan coaching staff... is increasingly loaded with "firecrackers"?
I don't think we'll be very medium next season...
Goin' be lotsa hollerin' at practice...

I'd love to get April, he is very good. I'd also like to see all of our coaches from this past year -- gone. I just get this feeling if any of them return, Snyder is still calling day to day stuff. On the other hand, it might be true - Danny Smith may be the best ST's coach available now (actually hard for me to believe!!) and he might really be Shanny's pick. If so, I'm okay. However, please tell me Shanny wasn't asked to keep him by Snyder (directly or thru BA). Thinking back, does anyone imagine JKC telling Joe Gibbs who to have as a ST coach?

I hope we get Thrash to work on the return game.

Nope!
Why should I? When was the last time he coached a good defense? Has he ever?

IMO, considering that we really know very little about who is really good or bad, as a coach, I'll let the guys that Allen and Shanahan have selected at least show that they can do the job before I think that they have little to no chance of doing it

- but then, I'm more of a positive thinker and while I'm concerned about our owner (who has proven to be a failure regarding NFL players & coaches) I think these guys are all looking to use this sorry state of a franchise as an opportunity
btw - I like Haslett and I am not as down on Danny Smith as some - he just needs to be able to do his job without any 'help' from above

Danny Smith's teams' play is going to be better with a better group of players to use
