Did anyone really care then?

It was the worst kept secret in sports. I don't even watch baseball and I knew who he was and what he did.

Baseball doesn't really care, but they have to make a show of it. The fact is nobody wants to go see nine-innings of a 1-0 baseball game, they want to see someone knock the ball out of the park.

They need these guys like McGuire, Sosa and Rodriguez to maintain a high level of interest from the fan base.

Pete Rose can't go near a baseball diamond, but McGuire cheats and admits to it a decade later so he can get a job teaching others how to cheat.

nice.

People here in St. Louis care. The guy is a cult hero, they named a highway after him, Busch Stadium has an entire section named after him. My wife, who is a huge Cards fan, is crushed. A dude I work with left early after hearing this news.

I do. That can be just as exciting and a whole lot more tension filled than a game with a football score.

Haven't really cared about baseball since Bobby Short screwed DC.

The only thing a baseball game like that does is put me to sleep.

I don't really care but if I ever find out Jeter did steroids, I'll be officially done with MLB for good. He's my last hope and its not like I'm a Yankees fan but I really respect that guy as a baller.

I think that it was a bigger deal a few years ago, before people realized how widespread the use of steroids was. It's hard to make the argument that players that are juicing are gaining a competitive advantage when so many guys were doing it.

As for McGwire, he (along with Sosa, Clemens, Bonds, and Palmeiro) screwed themselves when they lied about using performance enhancing drugs. Guys like Giambi and Pettite admitted to using and didn't try to hide it, so people got over it fairly quickly.

Exactly. Nobody should be surprised by this revelation.

Sad, just horribly sad.. and to say "we all did it" isn't really an excuse its more like a serious cop-out. Then the dude had the audacity to say it was just to get back out there (from rehab) and it didn't affect his game play.. shoooooooooooooooot... heck yea it did!!! I'm not gonna lie, I was cheering for him back then when he was banging them out of the park, but I also thought back then he was on some GREAT vitamins

I agree. While I thought congress holding hearings on this was a pathetic violation of the 10th amendment, I respected at least that he took the fifth instead of lying like Bonds and others. But the comments I saw like you I felt were pathetic rationalizations.

This is sad. Growing up my parents were A's fans and it rubbed off on me and Mark McGwire and Rickey Henderson were my two favorite players on the A's and now I have lost all my respect for Mark.
