Tony Dungy was contacted by an NFL team on Thursday about taking over as head coach, but isn’t saying which team it was.

During a Friday morning appearance on The Dan Patrick Show the ex-Buccaneers and Colts coach dropped that little nugget, but added that the Buffalo Bills were not the team that contacted him.

Other possibilities include the Washington Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs among others.

In the past Dungy has stated time and again that he is not interested in returning to coaching.

Rooney rule out of the way...

Jon Gruden’s wife has been in contact with a local real estate agent in the Northern Virginia area seeking out homes near Redskins Park in Ashburn according to an unconfirmed report on radio station 106.7 The Fan which broadcasts in the nation’s capital.

I'm not sure if that was real or a joke. They said that one of the guys there has a friend who works at Remax and Gruden's wife called an agent there. That's a stretch IMO.

I've worked with very wealthy clients in the past (for those that don't know, I sell Real Estate in Los Angeles - moreso Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, the beach cities). With that being said, they all require one thing, a letter of confidentiality. That would be required before they even start working together. So I'm a little skeptical about this rumor.

I was thinking the same thing...

Rumors yes it was meant to start the converstion on who do you want as the next HC...I see no way Zorn stays...very easy to get rid of now by saying the new GM wants....

My guess is Gruden...but I'm not sold on him??

Gruden does not do "medium", that's for sure...

Gruden's in a contract with ESPN. Unless there is a "Out" clause, I don't see it happening. We'll know more very soon but if he's contractually obligated to stay, he or Snyder's going to have to pay a lot of money to get him out of it.

If Gruden is not the coach, I could see someone who runs the WCO coming in here. I could also see them sticking with JC because in the past, Gruden has a lot of positives to say about Jason. It's going to be really interesting to hear what he say's on Monday. If he's very critical, then JC's out but if he's overly positive, then you have to feel confident that he'll stay.

Here's a name that I'm going to throw out there that may be on a short list. I would not be surprised to see Russ Grimm in here. I think that Snyder is trying to do everything he can to get the fan's back on his side. It seems that he's big on bringing guys back who have history with this team and Grimm fit's that role. We'd probably go back to a power run game type offense like the Steelers ran before they left - and got all pass happy.

If it is Gruden, how exactly does it work with ESPN. Didn't he just sign an extension for 2-5 years with Monday Night Football?

Dungy says he was approached about a coaching position last week, but is not interested in a return.

Dungy is, by history, a straight shooter... so I think he is out.

Dungy is, by history, a straight shooter... so I think he is out.

Correct CT...thats why I said Rooney Rule have been done...I bet we find out on the plane ride home from S.D. No way this thing drags out like last time!!

I've been saying that all along..but not as coach..as Team Prez...then he'd still have a little bit of time left during his day!

I would LOVE to see him come it...on the other hand I think the NFL has to say look TD is not coachng so by contacting him it does NOT furfill the spirit of the Rooney Rule

I like Gruden as a coach, but you can't just take a big money contract and then rip it up if you feel like it.

Anyway, among the guys that Allen has worked with in the past aren't really big names. We'll probably bring in someone more or less unknown. Allen is an executive VP AND GM now so the celeb coaches like Cowher, Shannahan, Dungy and Holmgren are basically out.

Honestly, I think Jim Zorn does a lot of things well as an NFL coach and wouldn't mind if he came back. But he's probably not going to. Gary Kubiak could be fired, Ron Rivera is always being discussed, former player Todd Bowles is a good candidate... there's a lot of guys out there... but if I had to guess, I'd say Allen is completely in charge.

I think that there is little doubt that it is going to be Gruden. Yes, he signed an extension with ESPN, however, those types of contracts usually have out clauses or buy-out provisions. There is virtually no chance that that contract does not contain some type of out provision. That's just the way that these types of contracts are done.

I don't think it would be shocking for Zorn to stay.

I like the idea that was posted about Russ Grimm.

For those talking about Dungy, he was fired from Tampa and replaced with Allen/Gruden so I don't see him now coming to work for Allen.

My only concern with Gruden is that he seems to burn his teams out - He's good for two or three years, then they tire of his act.

Whoever it is, the team got better today. If Snyder is really turning over full control, I'm going to need to change my screen name. Is there a way to change, or do you have to start over?

The only thing I don't get about Gruden is that he just recently signed that extension with MNF. That just seems weird.

Well I'm sure this has been in the works for a while. So that's what doesn't make sense unless he has an out clause and plans on coaching. Snyder would have to pay him more than what he's making now at ESPN. Maybe it's just strategy or he totally intends on staying on at ESPN.

Yes, and even in the event that his termination of the contract requires a buyout, is there any doubt that Danny would sign without even looking at how much? When Snyder wants a toy . . .

Just recently, Vinny was still GM of the Washington Redskins. Things can change rather quickly, sometimes.

Jay Glazer said in his interview on the Mike Wise show that the perfect fit in DC, if he's fired, would be John Fox from Carolina. Glazer said that Fox has done more with less than any other coach. He also said that Fox would stand up to Snyder and he has a relationship with Snyder and Allen.

Shanahan, not Gruden, could be in play in D.C.

While the initial speculation after a wild chain of events this morning centered around whether the resignation of Vinny Cerrato and the signing (I think 11 minutes later) of Bruce Allen as Redskins general manager would mean that Jon Gruden was the eventual apple of Daniel Snyder's eye, don't forget about Mike Shanahan.

Interestingly, Allen joined the Raiders' front office the same year that Shanahan got the head coaching job in Denver. They faced each other every year for nine years until Allen went to run the Buccaneers.

And though Allen and Gruden were a pair in Oakland and Tampa Bay, we hear them joining up in Washington is not a sure thing.

Interesting stuff that we'll be following the rest of today and, I suspect, well beyond that

DMN: ‘Skins clear way for Shanny


This morning, ESPN Radio 980 in Washington D.C. reported that Vinny Cerrato has resigned as the vice president of the Redskins. What does this mean for the ‘Skins? Well, this isn't the first time Cerrato has been fired by the team. The last time, he was fired by then-coach Marty Schottenheimer, who had all the power -- and once Schottenheimer was fired, Cerrato was brought back. Now, there will be no bringing him back. It is being reported that the 'Skins have hired Bruce Allen as their vice president of football operations and general manager.

Here’s what Cerrato had to say about his departure, issued as a statement released by the team: “We agreed that the franchise needs someone different in this position. I'm thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I've been given over the years.”

So what does it mean? It means that many of us, including me, were wrong in thinking that Cerrato would remain in spite of the likely change in coaches. Now, the decks have been fully cleared for the next head coach/general manager. And my sources tell me that it will still be Mike Shanahan; pay no attention to timing of the move, which some would imply has something to do with Mike Holmgren. This move allows the next head coach (Shanny) to walk into the building with all the authority and allows him to rebuild and repair the organization — with each new hire coming with his blessing.

I would love John Fox as HC, but first he has to get fired by the Panties! If he is, how long would it take for them to hire Bill Cohwer?
